It’s the tenth year of the Scottish Legal Awards and Scott + Co is proud to have been associated with the event for most of that decade, latterly as main sponsor.

It’s been a decade with many challenges for the legal

profession, but lest we forget, it’s also included many more buoyant years.

The Scott + Co Scottish Legal Awards have consistently grown over that period - through good years and bad. There are good business reasons for that. There is nothing like an increasingly competitive market place to make it important to showcase great work. But I believe that the Awards continue to attract entries and sponsors because they are a celebration of a great Scottish business.

The Scottish legal community has a great brand image. It is renowned for its distinctiveness, its integrity and its innovation. There have been challenges, technological, geographical and structural, as well as economic but Scottish Law firms have shown flexibility and imagination in rising to these challenges and turning them into new opportunities. This has been reflected in the development of new categories for the Awards recognising the importance of innovation and developing new specialisms.

As a judge as well as a sponsor, I’ve been impressed by the diversity of the Scottish legal world – the range of solutions to client problems and the constant search for better client service. This has involved exciting applications of technology, new partnerships, and a whole range of innovative ideas. Never let it be said that lawyers lacked imagination!

But at the heart of every winning entry are people. From the reception desk to the court-room to the back-office, it is talented, determined, people who bring the Scottish legal profession to life. The awards recognise the individual star, but we also recognise the importance of people working together - the pooling of skills and insights that provide clients with solutions.

The Awards go into their second decade in good form. Hopefully, there are many more glittering evenings ahead where the profession can come together to celebrate. But the whole edifice of the Awards depends on one thing - the entries.

Like the Olympics or the National Lottery, you can’t win without entering. It’s time to start chewing the pencil, or the i-pad, and preparing for the late night pizza.

Good luck!

ros.gov.ukRegisters of Scotland is responsible for compiling and maintaining public registers of land and property transactions, and other legal records. Our work is dominated by the two main registers recording ownership of and rights over, land and property - the General Register of Sasines and the Land Register of Scotland. The Land Register is a state guaranteed; plans-based register established by the Land Registration (Scotland) Act 1979 Act to eventually replace the Sasine register.

Apart from the two main land registers we also hold 14 registers grouped under the collective name of the Chancery and Judicial Registers. We currently employ over 1,400 people, in offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

We have always been self-financing, being funded by the fees charged for registration and for providing information from the registers. In 1996 we were awarded Trading Fund status.

We have a clear goal to further reduce reliance on paper-based systems, drive down fees and provide a first class service to the people of Scotland. Our work protects peoples’ legal rights and we play a vital role in maintaining economic confidence by guaranteeing land and property ownership.

It does so by ensuring that those in need can access the services of lawyers in practice and through law students working in University law clinics. It also seeks to promote a pro bono ethos in the Scottish legal profession by encouraging more lawyers to give up some of their time to provide free legal services and to celebrate those who already do so.

LWS works largely with member firms to seek out pro bono opportunities, with an initial focus on matching these firms with established advice centres. Since March 2011 it has launched three new legal clinics, two involving CABs in East Lothian and the third at Parkhead CAB in Glasgow. It also provides additional resource for the clinic run by Edinburgh University’s Law School. Opportunities for new clinics in other parts of the country are currently being pursued.

Scottish Paralegal The Scottish Paralegal Association celebrates their 20th Anniversary in 2013 as the only independent professional body representing the interests and promoting the development of paralegals in Scotland. Our membership is comprised of paralegals and students working and studying in all areas of law across the breadth of Scotland. Paralegals are employed as fee earners in private practice and in-house and are an integral part in delivery of legal services today. The Association acts in the best interests of its members by representing their collective opinions and views and is managed on a voluntary basis by an elected committee who are paralegals themselves.

In 2010 the launch of the Law Society of Scotland Registered Paralegal scheme, developed in partnership with the Scottish Paralegal Association, was announced at the Scottish Parliament by the Justice Minister. Consistency and high standards are an absolute necessity to our integrity and respect as an emerging profession. CHILDREN 1ST is the working name of the Royal Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSSPCC), which was founded in 1884.

Every year thousands of children and families seek our support. Some of the children we work with

have suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Others are struggling to cope with poverty, parental substance misuse, bullying, family breakdown and chaotic home lives.

We focus on providing services that support children and young people to remain with their families, whenever it is possible and safe to do so. We work to influence policy and legislation to ensure that vulnerable children and young people are given the support and protection they need.

We have 39 local services across Scotland and four national services. Last year, CHILDREN 1ST provided help and support to 4,760 children, young people, parents and carers through our local services. Every penny we raise stays in Scotland.

We hope you have a wonderful and successful evening at the 2013 Scottish Legal Awards. On behalf of all the children and families we work with, thank you.
