welcomefrom the President

For many years I have enjoyed spectating at this prestigious tournament and have enjoyed representing West Lothian Bowling Association.

It is now both an honour and a privilege to be serving as President of the Scottish Inter-County Top Ten Association.

It is a testament to all those involved that this event is now entering its’ 34th year and is still one of the highlights in the bowling calendar.

I am highly appreciative of the Committee who make this tournament the success it is, to the players who provide a festival of bowling and to the clubs who provide so much support during the event.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Eddlewood Bowling Club who provide excellent facilities and support in the form of markers, scoreboard markers and caterers, without whom the event would not happen.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those spectators who help to create a fantastic atmosphere and offer support to their players.

Finally I would like to recognise our much valued headline sponsor – The Co-operative Funeralcare and also the generous contribution of our Support Advertisers. Their commitment to the event is extremely welcome.

So to all the clubs participating I hope you all have fun, make new friendships and I wish you all good bowling.

Gary Clelland (West Lothian Bowling Association)President

I am highly appreciative of the Committee who make this tournament the success it is,

One of the most remarkable tournament successes in recent years has been the growth of the Scottish Inter-County Top Ten Tournament. When it was formed in 1982, the competition was between the Top Ten Champions of Edinburgh and Midlothian. This year 25 Counties are represented.Eddlewood Bowling Club will host the 2015 Semi-Finals and Final. The Association Secretary has high hopes of the competition maintaining its popularity.

TARVES BOWLING CLUB(Aberdeen & Kincardine Bowling Association)

Tarves is a small village situated approximately 20 miles north of Aberdeen, and the bowling green located in the centre of the village is one of the main features of this picturesque rural location. The club originated in 1948 when the local ‘laird’ nominally sold a piece of ground to the village for the purpose of creating a bowling green and thanks to the earnest endeavours of a group of local business men, a green was laid, a Club established and we are still going strong almost 70 years later.

Despite being a relatively small club with a current membership of just over thirty men and women we have always been a competitive club and enjoyed a lot of success in our respective District and County leagues and competitions over the years. Most recently winning the Aberdeen & Kincardineshire fours league for two of the last three seasons and adding the Top Ten success to our earlier league win was the highlight of our 2014 season, our first success in the competition after several years of trying.

We regularly have representatives at the National Finals although our only outright success to date was our Pair winning the first Mixed Pairs event in 1988. Tarves also provides a strong support to the County Team with last year four of our members playing for Aberdeen & Kincardineshire, one of whom was also the immediate Past President of the Association.

We have also had a few International trialists, both Junior and Senior, over the years, and are very proud to have seen one of our members, Connor Milne, make his International debut in the 2014 Junior International series.

We are looking forward to the challenge of competing in the Inter County Top Ten for the first time and wish all our fellow competitors every success.

CARNOUSTIE WEST END BOWLING CLUB(Angus Bowling Association)

Carnoustie West End Bowling Club was opened on May 14 1927, and for over 50 years the Club played within the public sector. However, in 1979, ambitious members, keen to raise the profile of the Club, made plans by extending the clubhouse. With hard work by many members the new building was completed and in 1981 Carnoustie West End Bowling Club applied for and were given membership of the Angus Bowling Association as a private bowling club.

This was a new challenge for the member, which they tackled with great enthusiasm, reaching the final of the Angus League for the first time in 1984. Members took on all the club duties including green keeping. The work of Jake McKenzie and his green keeping team, Fred Duncan and his DIY team and Don McKay and those who served in the bar and kept the clubhouse clean, meant that expenditure was kept to a minimum and the club began to build up a bank balance.

A group of teenagers joined the club at the turn of the century and as they matured with the help of the more experienced bowlers, Carnoustie West End began performing consistently well in all Angus Competitions. Carnoustie West End then became recognised as one of the best performing teams in Angus and have a great success recently - winning the Angus League twice, winning the Angus Top Five twice and winning the Angus League for the second time last year. Last year, for the first time since the Hunter Cup was established in 1904, the same rink from Carnoustie West End won the Trophy for the third consecutive year.

Last year, David McGill, became the club’s first full internationalist when he represented Scotland in the British Bowls Competition.

Despite its success on the green, Carnoustie West End still prides itself on being known as ‘a friendly wee club’.

Page 7: Scottish Inter County Top Ten 2015

CAMPBELTOWN BOWLING CLUB(Argyll & Bute Bowling Association)

Campbeltown Bowling Club has won the Argyll & Bute Top Ten competition in four of the past five years and is looking forward to this year’s competition especially as we have a home match against Fife winners Dalgety Bay in the first round and if successful, further home matches up to the semi-final stage. This we would hope will be a bonus for us and hopefully a distinct advantage although this did not prove to be the case last year against Carrick Knowe. Strangely, we were scheduled to travel to Dalgety Bay to play in the second round last year but home losses for both teams prevented this but this year Kismet has prevailed.

Thanks to our relatively mild winters and good late April and early May weather, the green should be at a good pace for the first match that will be only a month after we open and the grazing sheep that keep the grass in trim over the winter will be back on their hill pastures for the summer.

This year Jimmy Anderson and John McLean who won the 2014 Scottish National Pairs championship, enhance the squad. Although they are obviously a very strong pairing, they may well be kept apart to strengthen other parts of the team.

The club is located almost in the centre of Campbeltown in the Stronvaar area of the town from where we derive our alternative name used by Bowls Scotland and almost everyone locally. It is a long haul down to the Kintyre peninsula from the central belt with the town being a three-hour leisurely drive from Glasgow that is compensated for by the superb views along the coast road out towards Islay, Jura and North Antrim. The clubhouse and green is situated 200 metres from the town centre in a residential area where you are guaranteed a warm, friendly and sporting welcome win or lose.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you need help or information regarding accommodation, directions or start times.

TARBOLTON BOWLING CLUB(Ayrshire Bowling Association)

As Tarbolton Bowling Club celebrates it’s 140th Centenary year, we also celebrate winning the Top Ten and for the first time ever, The Baird Bowl. We currently have 75 members of all ages.

Founded in 1874, the club initially had four rinks, rink 5 and 6 were added on later with turf obtained from Hoods Hill, Tarbolton. The original clubhouse is still in use today. With the bar opening in 1968, followed by the locker room, verandah and finally the lounge, the club remains structurally as it was. Various cosmetic works have been carried out over the years. The ladies section started around 1960 and they were only allowed to play during the day and on a Monday evening. Now of course, both ladies and gents have equal membership and playing rights.

The green, originally cut with a scythe is now maintained with a very elaborate mower, and so far we have been extremely fortunate over the years in having the green maintained by green bailiffs and green keeper.

The club can boast of having three members as past Presidents of Ayrshire Bowling Association and a member as past Ayrshire Bowling Association Secretary. From our ladies section, the same honour of Ladies President of Ayrshire Bowling Association. Tarbolton Bowling Club has saw many of it’s members past and present, including juniors, represent Ayrshire and Scotland over the years. In the gents section, here is a non-exhaustive list includes Top Ten won in years 1992, 2003, 2005 and 2014; ABA Pairs won in 2006, 2012; Champion of Champions in 2001, ABA Singles Champion in 1985, 2008; Scottish Triples Finalists in 2001; SYBA U17 Triples winners in 2011, ABA Fours winners in 2006, ABA Triples in 2010 and 2013, ABA Mixed Pairs in 2007, Ayrshire Youth Singles in 2009; ABA U16s in 2011. Ayr Tournament Girls Singles winners in 2001, 2009 and 2010; West of Scotland Ladies 4’s in 1989; AWBA Pairs in 1967 and 2004, SWBA Ladies 4s in 1985.

Page 8: Scottish Inter County Top Ten 2015

All in all Tarbolton Bowling Club has a successful history in many tournaments over the years and can boast of some of the finest Ayrshire Bowlers. On another note, some of our members have been very successful during the winter season’s playing indoor, and have reached and continue to play at Scottish Indoor level.

Tarbolton Bowling Club wishes all the clubs every success in the future.

JEDBURGH BOWLING CLUB(Borders Bowling Association)

Our Club was founded in 1859, moving to its present location at Allars Mill in 1895. The old clubhouse had served us well since 1895 with toilets, changing rooms and kitchen added over the years. In 2013, after many years sourcing funds we were finally able to demolish the old clubhouse and build a brand new, larger building which will serve us well for many years to come.

The Club has never had any player selected to play for Scotland (although we have had our fair share of characters who no doubt felt they should have been). We have however produced many excellent bowlers who have gone on to represent the County in the Hamilton Trophy, this year we had four players playing in one of the games.

Over the years we have had a fair representation in qualifiers for Queens Park and Ayr, for ladies and gents but our best run came in 2011 when the gent’s rink of Jim Straker, Robbie Lindores, Greg Nagle and Euan Lindores lost in the semi final to the eventual winners Carrick Knowe.

We are members of the Gents Border League, which has 18 member clubs and Jedburgh has won the first division in 1966, 1974, 1978 and 2006 (all world cup years, so bring on the next world cup), the second division in 1998 and the cup in 2005. Our seniors also won their league in 2011.

This is the first time that Jedburgh has won this competition and we are delighted to be representing the Borders and are very much looking forward to the challenge ahead.

WESTHILL BOWLING CLUB(Bon Accord Bowling Association)

Westhill BC was formed in November l982, leading to the opening of the Green by May 1986 and has a current membership of 43 Gents and 20 Ladies and 7 juniors. The Clubhouse is shared with the local Tennis club and was funded by the Members, the Scottish Sports Council and Aberdeenshire Council. This Facility was eventually extended in 1995.

Situated in Denman Park, Westhill, the club is some 8 miles due west of Aberdeen City Centre.

This will be the fourth time our Club has represented the Bon Accord Bowling Association in the Scottish Inter County Top Ten competition having previously played in 2007, 2011 and 2013.

We are looking forward to hosting our North East neighbours from Huntly BC in the 1st round in 2015 when all players and supporters can be assured of a warm welcome.

ELLON BOWLING CLUB(Buchan County)

Ellon is situated 16 miles north of Aberdeen on the A90 with a population in the early twentieth century of approximately 1000 and has grown in size to a present day population of approximately 8500 inhabitants.Ellon Bowling club was founded in 1914 by a number of the local business men as a men only club but opened its doors to women in the early sixties. It is a thriving club reaching an all time high membership in the mid nineties of over 250 but due to the general decline in Bowling within the north east now stands

Page 9: Scottish Inter County Top Ten 2015

at around 130. Ellon Bowling Club joined the newly formed Buchan Bowling Association in 1921 and to this day supports and maintains strong ties with the clubs in the area. Over the years E.B.C. has won the Buchan league on numerous occasions however, Top Ten success has been restricted to three wins once in the mid nineties, in 2009 and again in 2012. In addition to domestic competition E.B.C. supplies a number of players to the B. B. A for county matches and have had a variety of teams competing in the play offs at Ayr on an annual basis.

We look forward to the challenges of the coming season

ALVA BOWLING CLUB (Clackmannan & Kinross Bowling Association)

Alva bowling club, sitting at the foot of the ochil hills has qualified for this years inter county top ten for the first time. We look forward to our first participation in this event and wish all the other clubs the best of luck. Founded in 1856, we are one of two bowling clubs in Alva, the other being Alva South.

Alva has enjoyed success at county level and last year had 5 teams in our associations county finals, with county titles won over the last 4 years. More recently, Alva has become better known for the success of our junior section, beaten semi-finalists in the triples at the SYBA. In 2013, our juniors qualified for 2014 in the singles, pairs and triples. The gents are now delighted to have matched at least a part of their success.

Alva’s most notable bowler is Brian Rattray, Scottish singles winner and Runner-up and long time team member for Scotland and still an integral part of the Top Ten team and Alva bowling club.

KIRKCONNEL BOWLING CLUB(Dumfriesshire Bowling Association)

Kirkconnel Bowling Club was formed in 1913 and is located in the North of Dumfriesshire, four miles South of the Ayrshire border, adjacent to the A76.

At our peak in the 80’s we had 100+ members, however, like other clubs our membership has declined and we now have approximately 40 members. Although representatives from the club have reached National Finals several times we have had only one winner, namely R. Irvine, F. White, F. Edwards & J. Loy in the Senior Rinks in 1991. Jim Patterson in 1952 is the only club member to have represented Scotland. This is the third time that Kirkconnel have represented Dumfriesshire in the National Inter County Top Ten.

Our aim this year is to improve on our previous best performance of being beaten in the Semi Finals.

ROCK BOWLING CLUB(Dunbartonshire Bowling Association)

The Rock Bowling Club was founded in 1884 by the Denny family who owned the shipyard next to Dumbarton Castle for the workers. The Club sits on the banks of the river Clyde.

This is the seventh time we have represented Dumbartonshire in the Scottish Inter County Top Ten Association. Over the years we have supplied players for the Scottish team at both levels. Andy McGrandle, Robert Sloan (Jr), Graeme Sloan, and Gary Brown. Many Members have represented Dumbartonshire in the Andrew Hamilton Trophy, with Andy McGrandle, Derek Allan, and Kenny Paton reaching 100 caps, a great feat for them and the Club.

At National and County level we have done well also winning numerous Trophies at local level. We look forward to being Dumbartonshire’s representatives in 2015, meeting and making new friends in the bowling fraternity.

Page 10: Scottish Inter County Top Ten 2015

WEST END BOWLING CLUB(Edinburgh Top Ten Association)

Edinburgh West End Bowling Club was formed in 1864, making it one of Edinburgh’s older bowling clubs. In 1878 we were one of the founder member clubs of the Edinburgh & Leith Bowling Association and have always been involved with competitive bowling from our early roots. Our honours board is testament to this, where many county and district successes are recorded, as well as supplying a number of internationalists over the years. The 2014 President of the Edinburgh & Leith Bowling Association is Charlie Baillie a long standing member showing our continued support to bowling.

The Club, through George Buckle as Secretary had a long association with the South Edinburgh Bowling Association, supporting all league and knockout competitions they held with a fair bit of success. This was until 2007 when the Club joined the Edinburgh Bowling League to take part in the very competitive bowling league structure in Edinburgh. Our first team currently plays in division two, and our third team won the 2014 Division One Title.

As well as supporting bowling at local level, the club has quite a rare achievement in providing three Presidents of the then Scottish Bowling Association. In Duncan McLaren we have the Hon. Secretary of The British Isles Bowling Council, a post he took over, after many years as the Scottish Bowling Association representative of the old District 12.

2014 was a great milestone for the club being our sesquicentennial anniversary, or 150th to us. We had a great year in 2014 with many visitors and special games, and this was certainly topped off by winning the 2014 Edinburgh Top Ten Trophy. This is our first venture into the Inter County Top Ten, a challenge we are relishing and looking forward to. We would also wish all the competing Club’s the best of fortune.

WEST BARNS BOWLING CLUB(East Lothian Bowling Association)

West Barns Bowling Club is situated in a village on East Lothian’s coast, some 2 miles north of Dunbar. The Club’s earliest minutes date back to March 1913. The ground for a bowling green and small hut were gifted to the village and the running of the club was under trustees. In 1976 the trusteeship was dissolved and a replacement clubhouse was built with bar facilities. This was opened by Mr Cunningham who had gifted the land to the club. The late Mr. R. Davidson, Past President of the S.B.A. was made an Honorary member in 1979. The club flourished from a membership of 25 to over 100 but the green was not standard size so after 13 years, the club was able to rent ground some 200 yards away from the original ground and build a new green and clubhouse at a cost of £250,000. The new green was opened on 17th May 1992 by John Bell. The membership has now grown to just over 300 and the club has gone from strength to strength. The club won the former East Lothian Eastern League nineteen times, all of the East Lothian Bowling Association competitions and have had representatives at the Scottish Finals when our pairs, Ian Knox and Gary Landells were runners up in 2002 and in 2008 our Senior Fours, Willie Smith, Willie Cardwell, Bill Kerr, and Dougie Kennedy were runners up. The club has also produced many excellent young bowlers, some of whom have been selected for the County playing in the Hamilton Trophy and for Scotland. Alister Kennedy, Scott Kennedy, Struan Robertson and Gary Landells played their part in the East Lothian Hamilton Trophy wins of 2003 and 2005. We celebrated our centenary in 2013 and the icing on the cake was Alister Kennedy and Billy Mellors returning from the Scottish finals as Pairs Winners, capturing the Club’s first Scottish title. The pair went on to lift the British Title at Leamington Spa last year where they were also joined by Scott Kennedy as caps within the victorious Scottish National team. West Barns have an excellent Top Ten record within East Lothian and were beaten national finalists in

STRATHMIGLO BOWLING CLUB(Fife Bowling Association)

Since reaching the final of the Scottish Inter County Top Ten in 2011, and representing Fife again in 2013, Strathmiglo Bowling Club has continued to achieve success in many areas of the game. Founded in 1900, the club goes from strength to strength. Both Gents and Ladies won their respective leagues again this year (2014), the Gents for the fifth year in a row. The Club’s representatives also won the Gents Fife Fours in 2014.

Mike Simpson represented Scotland as a para-athlete in the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Narrowly beaten in the triples bronze medal play-off game, Mike went on to win the S.B.C. Club Championship for 2014. By the time this booklet is published, Lesley Doig (nee Gordon) will have represented Scotland as a full internationalist in Australia.

The Club relished the adventure of the play down stages of the 2011 Top Ten. Club members filled a 49-seater bus for trips to Inverness, Aberdeen and Hamilton enjoying raffles, sing songs, card games and other carryings-on during the journeys. In 2013 we travelled to Clackmannan, Stonehaven and Bogle Ha’. Away from the bowling side of things, the Club is strong. The facilities are in very good order and a new ‘grass maintenance machine’ will arrive in time for the 2015 season.

Strathmiglo Bowling Club extends best wishes to all Clubs and players in the 2015 Scottish Inter County Top Ten. We look forward to welcoming new visitors to Strathmiglo, the ‘Home of Bowls’, and to travelling the length and breadth of the country to follow our game.

KELVINDALE BOWLING CLUB(Glasgow Bowling Association)

Kelvindale Bowling Club was founded in 1928, with the turf taken from the shores of the Solway Firth, and is now considered to be one of the best bowling surfaces in Glasgow. Originally built as a Bowling and Tennis Club with three all-weather courts, a new concept at that time, it no longer competes in the Tennis Leagues but still continues to act as a community centre with bowls and social tennis.

The Club has and still enjoys successes in the various Scottish and Glasgow competitions and at present plays in the Glasgow League Premier Division. The majority of the Top Ten squad represented Glasgow West in the 2014 Hamilton Trophy, taking them to the quarter final stage.

This is the first time the Club has won the Glasgow Top Ten and after playing in the Inter-county Top Five last year, look forward to meeting and competing against the other Top Ten winning Clubs.

HUNTLY BOWLING CLUB(Highland Bowling Association)

Huntly Bowling and Tennis Club was established in 1885. Huntly was originally a market town and today still maintains a lovely town square where many local events are held. Huntly has a population of around 5000 and is situated in the North East of Scotland on the edge of Royal Deeside.

The Tennis Club was disbanded and the Bowling Club retained the whole premises, building a new clubhouse and carpark in the late 1950’s. We have a flourishing club with a membership of around 150 full playing members. Ladies were allowed into the club in 1962 and now have a well established ladies section. Our Green is widely used for Highland and Banffshire open competitions. We are proud to have 9 of our

members play for the Highland Bowling Association and we perform well in Banffshire and Highland inter Club and Open competitions. Over the years we have had good representation at the Scottish Finals in Ayr.

Huntly were delighted to win the Top Ten in 2013 having not won it since 1988 when we won it for Three consecutive years. We are extremely pleased to have retained the Top Ten Tile in 2014 and we will be trying hard to achieve another hat trick of wins. The Final was played on the Moray Green with Huntly being victorious in all four matches.

Huntly look forward to season 2015 when they will definitely be up for the challenge.

BURNBANK (HAMILTON) BOWLING CLUB(Lanarkshire Bowling Association)

Founded in 1951, Burnbank Hamilton Bowling Club was built and maintained by the local authority to provide a sports facility for the local community. In the late 1970s, the club’s small wooden clubhouse was destroyed by fire and the local authority put together a plan to build a new multi-purpose building. George Robertson MP opened the new facility in April 1979. In 1980 the club acquired a lease for the premises from Hamilton District Council and became a private club. A bar was installed in 1980 and a further refurbishment of the premises was carried out in 1995 when a new lounge was added. There are currently around 60 members in total.

The gents section had a long wait for success at Scottish level but that eventually materialised in 2012 when Gary McCann, Scott McInall Jnr and Jim McCann tasted success in the triples and then added the British Isles title the following season. Prior to this, John Docherty had come nearest to Scottish success when beaten in the 2005 singles final by Darren Burnett. The club enjoyed Scottish success in 2006 when Margaret Letham and John Docherty lifted the mixed pairs title. The ladies section have enjoyed Scottish successes also with Margaret Letham being crowned singles champion in 1999 and also when Lillian Cooper, Jean Mooney and Sandra Sinclair lifted the triples title in 2007.

Margaret has proudly promoted the club around the globe by competing in 5 successive Commonwealth Games and when winning the World pairs title with Joyce Lindores at Moama in 2000 and when skipping the Scottish rink to the World fours title at Adelaide in 2012.

At county level the gents section have enjoyed many successes and uniquely, over the years, the club’s name has been engraved on the junior singles, singles, pairs, triples, rinks and top 6 trophies on a number of occasions. Also, a number of members have played their part in the many Andrew Hamilton trophy successes enjoyed by the Lanarkshire South team.

This is our fourth appearance in the Inter County Top 10 having previously won the Lanarkshire Top 10 title in 1999, 2006 and 2008. For the first time our prelim round tie sees us with a home tie having travelled to Stranraer, Dunoon and Lossiemouth in our previous exploits.

We are delighted to be representing Lanarkshire once more in the Scottish Inter County Top 10 and we extend our best wishes to all the other clubs representing their respective counties in this years competition.

BONNYRIGG BOWLING CLUB(Midlothian Bowling Association)

Founded in 1870 by a group of businessmen, the first home of the club was situated off the High Street near the town centre and was called Bonnyrigg & Broomieknowe Bowling Club. The club moved to its present location in 1894. Bonnyrigg were one of six clubs who joined forces in 1895 to form the Midlothian Bowling Association. The club joined the Scottish Bowling Association when it was formed in 1892 and have represented the District in the National Finals on many occasions.

In 1962 Bonnyrigg were once again one of eight founder clubs of the now very successful Esk Bowling League which is now contested by almost all Midlothian Bowling Association members. In recent years Bonnyrigg has proven to be one of the most successful clubs in Midlothian having won the District Top Ten in 1987, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2013 and 2014. the club are also regular winners of Midlothian County championships. Bonnyrigg Bowling Club are also regular qualifiers for National Finals at Ayr Northfield, in 2014 the District was represented by Bonnyrigg Fours – who finished up as silver medalists – and Bonnyrigg Senior Singles.

The year 2014 was another very successful year for the club, as well as representatives at National Finals the club were also Esk League Division 1 winners and winners of Midlothian Top 5 singles for fourth successive year.

The highlight of 2014 however was winning National Top Ten for a second time and in winning Midlothian Top Ten this allows the club chance to defend National title.

Member Ronnie Duncan is a current outdoor Internationalist and was member of Bowls Scotland Elite Squad from which the 5 man team for 2014 Commonwealth Games was selected.

FORTROSE AND ROSEMARKIE BOWLING CLUB(Northern Counties Bowling Association)

Fortrose is 11 miles north of Inverness and is situated on the Black Isle. The club was founded in 1925 and immediately joined the Northern Bowling League where it has had remarkable success winning the league title on numerous occasions, including winning the league in 2013 for the third consecutive year. Over the years the club has achieved considerable success at local level, and teams reaching the Scottish finals. Our most recent success was our triple qualifying for the Scottish finals in Ayr this year. The club has produced many excellent bowlers, with nine out of the current Top Ten being selected to play for their county.

The late Jimmy Lumsden an honorary member of the club was involved in the formation of the Northern Counties Bowling Association. He was a member of the original team and became the fourth President in the 1988 season. This was followed by a successful three year term as team manager with the team finishing second in the section on each occasion.

We currently have two office bearers on the Northern Counties committee, Alan Ogilvie and Bill Jessiman as President and Treasurer respectively.

This is the first time Fortrose and Rosemarkie Bowling Club has won the County Top Ten Trophy, although three members of the team have won the Jimmy Page Memorial Trophy before. We are delighted and honoured to be representing the Northern Counties in this prestigious tournament, and the players and members look forward to the challenge ahead and hope we can bring the trophy back to the north.

PERTH BOWLING CLUB(Perth Bowling Association)

Perth Bowling Club has been very successful during their history winning all the Perthshire bowling competitions and having representatives at national finals. Like many other clubs at this time an effort to encourage youngsters is proving difficult. Our current membership is around 60 men.

The club has been well represented over the years at County level in the Hamilton Trophy series. 2014 Honours:- Perthshire Bowling Ass. Top Ten winners, Scottish Bowling Ass. District Pairs winners, P.B.A. Junior Singles winners, P.B.A. Campbell Trophy winners, Perth and District league Singles winners, Perth and District league Pairs winners, Perth and District league Fours winners,

CALEDONIA BOWLING CLUB(Renfrewshire Bowling Association)

Caledonia Bowling Club was instituted in 1873 and throughout our history have enjoyed success at Scottish, County and Club Levels. This is our fourth venture in the Scottish Inter County Top Ten Association Tournament and this is the first time that we have had the benefit of a home draw.

In our first attempt in 1994 we were drawn away to Inverness, away to Dalbeatie, away to House of Daviot and then to Colinton where we lost to Abbeyview in the final. Those who took part have since become known as the founder members of the “1000 Mile Club.”

The Clubs success at local level is highly commendable, having won the Paisley and District Bowling Association League Championship 8 times in the last 26 years. In 2012 we had a remarkable year winning the Paisley and District League, Reserve League and 5 Cups and in the Renfrewshire Bowling Association both the County and Centenary Cups.

Over the years the Club has had seven Presidents of the Renfrewshire Bowling Association, has won the County Cup nine times and the Inter County Cup on four occasions. We currently have seven members playing for the County Team and in the past have had T. Pattison (Team Captain) and W. Edmiston both making over 100 appearances for the County.

The Club has also had success in the Scottish Bowling Association competitions with William Blue winning the singles competition in 1926 and Ian McCowan playing for the national team in 1978.

In addition to the playing side, the Club has always had a proactive interest in all aspects of the game, particularly at District and County level.

Since our victory in the Renfrewshire Top Ten final, players, officials and members alike are looking forward to taking part in the Scottish Inter County Top Ten Association Tournament and can assure Strathmiglo Bowling Club, who will be representing Fife Bowling Association, a warm welcome when they visit us on the 24th May.

Alan and his cousin Scott Davies won the Ayr open pairs tournament in 2007, one of the most prestigious tournaments played in Scotland. They again reached the final in 2011, losing out on the last bowl of the game.

Janice Maxwell played in the Scottish ladies team from 1986 to 1997. Her international career began with her being crowned Scottish Ladies Champion in 1986. Janice’s highlight with Scotland came in the 1992 Women’s World Bowls winning the Triples, Fours and Team Gold medals. She has represented Scotland at two commonwealth games, skipping the fours to bronze in 1994. Janice has also been successful at Ayr tournament, winning the singles once and pairs three times.

The club had the honour of having provided the SBA President (2006) and SWBA President (2000) in recent years. The remarkable thing is that the two Presidents were husband and wife Jim and Janette Stewart. Jim and Janette were made Honorary Members of the club, along with Janice Maxwell, at the AGM in 2010.

BELLSBURN BOWLING CLUB(West Lothian Bowling Association)

Bellsburn Bowling Club was founded in 1982 on the site of the old Alfred Noble explosives works, in Linlithgow, as part of a sports club incorporating 4 tennis courts, 2 squash courts and a bowling green. Bellsburn has had a few successes over the years, notably District Fours winners in 1993. The rink of Scott Middlemiss, Willie Green, John Ross and Eddie Caulfield, went on to be beaten in the National Fours Semi-Final at Ayr Northfield. Craig Yeaman won the 1996 District Under 25’s Singles and went on to miss out in the 1st round at Ayr Northfield. Another notable success was Simon Lamb who won the West Lothian Champion of Champions in 1998 beating Ian Stewart of Bathgate BC in the final. Simon was also Runner Up in the 2003 West Lothian Masters, and also has a Junior Champion of Champions title.

International honour was brought to the club in 2009 when Gary Clelland gained his first Para International cap and then went on to narrowly miss out on a place in the 2014 Commonwealth Games place in the Para 2 Bowl Triples. More recent success was brought to the club in the shape of the Junior pairing of brothers Ewan and Gordon Sneddon who won the 2014 Scottish Under 17’s Pairs title, having been Runners Up the previous year. Gordon also has 2 Junior Champion of Champions titles to his name, Chris Brown also has a Junior Champion of Champions title.

2014 also saw Gary Clelland creating history by winning the inaugural Scottish National Para Singles Championship at Ayr Northfield, beating Billy Allan of Cowdenbeath who pipped Gary for the Lead spot in the 2 bowl Triples, in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

This is the first time Bellsburn has qualified for the Inter-County Top Ten finals having beaten last year’s finalists, and previous Inter County Top Ten winners, Kirkliston in a fantastic district final and must surely be one to watch in this year’s competition.

The stated aims and ambitions of the Association as laid down in the Constitution paints a landscape picture dominated by Para 2A “The object is to promote, foster, and safeguard the team game of bowls”.

East Lothian Council is proud to support the Scottish Inter County Top Ten Championship.

There is a fine tradition of bowling in East Lothian and the county is home of some of the game’s top names.

We also have a very strong youth interest in the sport. The Council supports a programme of development in the local primary schools, including a keenly contested annual tournament. With so many stars in the making the future looks bright for the sport.

BONNYRIGG - THE 2014 CHAMPIONS FROM MIDLOTHIAN

Bonnyrigg emulated their 2009 success when the proud champions of Midlothian captured The Co-operative Funeralcare sponsored Inter County Top Ten Title with victory over record holders Kirkliston in the 2014 final at Colinton. The final was a thrilling affair that went right down to the wire and decided on shot margin (+4) after a 4-4 share of the points. Bonnyrigg were successful in the Singles and Pairs but lost out on the Triples and Fours.

Kirkliston- champions in 1989, 2001, 2011, 2012 - came into the final after a hard fought 6-2 win over West Barns of East Lothian in the morning semi finals and the West Lothian champions were considered paper favourites with four current and two former caps in their ranks. Bonnyrigg beat Hyndland of Glasgow 6-2 in their semi final and were mentally well prepared by non-playing team captain Drew Pearson for their head to head encounter with the star spangled Kirkliston opposition.

“I knew the size of the challenge that faced us so I had preached to the lads all week not to be overawed by reputation as what mattered was the form on the day”. That message was picked up loud and clear by the Pairs partnership of Calum Redpath and John Stevenson who produced a heroic performance to win 21-9 and crush Commonwealth Games select Neil Speirs and his international partner Steven Forrest.

Speirs and Forrest failed to limit the damage done to the Kirkliston cause and that became a crucial factor as it followed the dramatic 21-20 defeat of Raymond Logan by Ronnie Duncan in a humdinger of a 22-end Singles clash. “Time stood still for us all on and around the green as we new that if Ray won it was a likely title winner for Kirkliston so it was a major moment when Ronnie carded the winner at 20-20”, said Pearson.

Bonnyrigg did face an anxious time at 17-6 down to Grant Logan in the Fours but Scott Lees, Scott Matthews, Lindsay Plenderleith, and Tam Russell made a big contribution by reducing the damage to an 18-13 defeat. Kirkliston, under Calum Logan, burnt the last end of the Triples twice in an effort to card what would be a title winning six but only managed a single in their 14-10 win over Neil Linton, Jamie Hanlan, and Kevin McDougall.
