Scott City R-1
ISSUE 1 SEPTEMBER 2009? ?
his summer I had the opportunity to work with an elementary vertical team while
attending the Show Me Curriculum Administrator’s Association(SMCAA) Summer
Conference. SMCAA Director Sharon Waite facilitated the conference. We learned that Tthe Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) Cycle Five will begin in 2010. There will be
changes that will effect every educator in our district. We must prepare now, while we are
writing curriculum, for these changes.
MSIP Cycle 5 is in the final stages of approval. Ms. Waite worked on the
final draft and relayed that although not set in stone, it is likely that the following
expectations and items will be included in MSIP Cycle 5 in some form:
n Evidence that the written curriculum is actually being taught in the classroom on
an ongoing basis. The MSIP team will request actual
student work, graded assessments, and teacher plans.
They will check to make sure these items match the
objectives and samples in the written curriculum. They
will request this information from two teachers per grade
level/subject level.
nEvidence of a mission that includes high expectations,
accountability, and data driven instruction. Use of best
practices such as Marzano Strategies and DOK
activities.
nScope and Sequence. All curriculum must have a
scope and sequence.
nAn emphasis will be placed on formative and
summative assessments.
nEmphasis that professional development is attached to
data: common assessments, MAP, and F/R lunch.
nEvidence that our district has created a positive environment for
student learning.
These are some of the MSIP 5th Cycle anticipated revisions.
The bottom line-- it is imperative that you collaborate on common objectives, common
assessments, and scope and sequence with your grade level/subject colleagues so that you are
using the same curriculum. You need to use, review, and update your curriculum on an ongoing
basis. Look at curriculum as an opportunity to let DESE and your community know how
outstandingly and professionally you serve your students.

Curricula
As you work on your curriculum,
questions may come up. I have resources on
assessments, Marzano Strategies, DOK,
differentiated instruction, and backwards design.
I look forward to collaborating with you
and your team.

IT’S A FACT: Collaboration is the key!
EATOnline: What you must include in your curriculum
Please check to make sure that all of your curriculum, including
Communication Arts and Math, have the following components:
Measurable Objectives
Essential Questions with Enduring Understanding Focus
Essential Questions must be listed
Specific Depth of Knowledge activities
A DOK 1 level for the majority of activities is NOT desired
Summative and Formative Assessments
Make sure the assessment matches the objective
Every learning activity must be assessed.
Level of Expectation
Cluster GLE/CLEs
Every GLE/CLE listed in your curriculum must be included in
your lesson activities and assessed. Do not make one
objective for one GLE/CLE.
Include scoring guides/rubrics
Specific Instructional Methods
Differentiated Instructional Activities
Enrichment activities
Content Standard and, Process Standards
Specific titles of district resources
Include notes in the note portion. They are viewed favorably
when the team reviews. If you have guest speakers planned,
include them in the note portion.
I am here to help you update your curriculum! You may find
me room 105 in the Middle School hallway. I can meet you before
or after school and on prep time. Let’s work together!
