Scotichronicon
Walter Bower
Walter Bower wrote the Scotichronicon
He was recognised as the abbot of Inchcolm Abbey and was one of the commisioners which collected the ransom of James I, king of the Scots
He also defended Scottish rights at the council of Perth
"probably the most important mediaeval account of early Scottish history"
The Scotichronicon is recognised as being the national identity of Scottish people
It also gives an insight into World views at the time
The book was requested by Sir david stewart of Rosyth and was a continuation of ‘Chronica gentis Scotorum’ by John of Fordun.
Chronica gentis Scotorum
This was written in order to make this section of Scottish history live long in World history.
It was written by John of Fordun who used sources from as far back as Biblical times to give an authentic representation of Scottish History.
Fordun died before he could complete the records up untill his own time.
Completed Work
The project was 16 books long when it was finished
Written by both Fordun and Bower
Some of the original books written by Fordun were edited by Bower at a later date.
The book was also written entirely in Latin despite some quotes being in english.
Reductions
Bower attempted a reduction, or abridgement, of the scoticronican in the later stages of his life which is known as the book of Cupar
Two other abridgments, by unknown writers, were attempted and are kept in the Advocates' library
