Starling Hunter © 2011 1 Scorpio 25: An X ray A n x-ray is a high-energy form of electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength in the range of 0.01 to 10 nanometers and energy levels in the range of 120eV to 120keV. 1  In many languages, X-radiation is called Röntgen radiation, after Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who is generally credited as its discoverer, and who had named it X-radiation to signify an unknown type of radiation. 2  The pseudo-prefix x - would seem, then, to be related to Latin prefix e x -  which means “outside, out of, away from.” 3 That prefix descends from the Indo-European (IE) root  eghs- which means “out” and from which also desce nd the words exoteric, exotic, external, exterior,  extreme, a n d strange. 4  The words radiate  (to send our rays or waves; To extend in straight  lines from or toward a center) and r a y (beam of light) are both related t o radius  which descends from the Latin radius  (staff, spoke of a wheel, beam of light). The origin of this word is unknown but it has been suggested that it related to radix   which means “root.” 5  The word radix  descends from the IE root  wrad-  which means “branch, root” and from which also descend root, wort, radical, radical, radish, radix, eradicate, deracinate, ramify  a n d licorice.  THEMES:  Two rather obvious themes or related ideas are present  above.
