Four members of staff recently took part in the 6th International Conference on the Holocaust at Yad Vashem in Israel.

The theme of the conference was ‘Teaching the Shoah – Fighting Racism

Never too youngThe children in our Early Learning Centres are learning early about the importance of Tzedakah and giving back to the community.

The families of Upper Kinder Gimmel at Szalmuk Family Early Learning Centre have chosen Hatzolah as their Tzedakah project this year. As each child celebrates their birthday, a portion of the group present money is donated to this very worthwhile cause. Danny Elbaum from Hatzolah visited the kinder children recently and presented the class with a Certificate of Appreciation and two Junior Hatzolah bears. The children were very interested as Danny spoke about the work of Hatzolah and loved playing with the bears in their kinder hospital.

Head of Gandel Besen House, Rene Silbermann, and Primary Jewish Studies teacher Edna Sackson spoke on ‘The use of personal stories in connecting children with the Holocaust’ and how the immediacy of personal stories provides students with an accessible way of connecting to an event of this magnitude.

Media Studies teacher Marc Light discussed ‘Using new media to teach the Holocaust’. He gave insights into the College’s new media course which uses technology, film texts and media representations to encourage students to engage with the Holocaust.

Finally, Director of Jewish Studies and Hebrew, Avi Cohen, presented on ‘From Witness to Child: The Change in Shoah Commemorations’ and detailed how the

COMMUNITY-WIDE BABY EXPO – pre-natal through to kinderOur Scopus young alumni are organising a community-wide Baby Expo directed at the age group of -1 to 3. It will showcase wholesalers, retailers, service providers and health practitioners and will also incorporate family fun activities at Gandel Besen House.

Free, pre-advertised information sessions on a variety of topics such as pre-natal health and child development will take place in the Szalmuk Family Early Learning Centre where many fun toddler activities will also be arranged.

The Baby Expo has already attracted wide support. If you would like to be one of the limited exhibitors or presenters please call Clare Devine on 9834 0122 or email [email protected] for an expression of interest form. If you’d like to join the enthusiastic organising team made up of OCs who graduated from 1992 through to 2000, please call Josh Sharp on 0414 588 561.

College is evolving its Yom Hashaoh commemorate assemblies as it recognises that in the future it will have to conduct ceremonies in the absence of survivors.

Edna Sackson said, “The conference was an amazing opportunity to be part of a worldwide learning community. The highlight was learning with so many interesting people, from a variety of places and backgrounds, for whom educating about the Holocaust is a common goal.”

Marc Light agreed, “I found the conference stimulating and challenging, but most of all reassuring − that the legacy of the victims will not be forgotten.”

The College was extremely proud to have so many staff presenting at the conference and know they all enjoyed sharing their knowledge with colleagues from around the world.

Building Bridges

The College recently hosted the ‘Building Bridges through Interfaith Dialogue’ program, with students from Aquinas College, Caulfield Grammar School (Wheelers Hill), Minaret College and Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar School visiting Scopus.

Facilitated by youth leaders from all faiths, including three Scopus Old Collegians, the five session program encouraged students to share their experiences of their own faith and so develop a greater understanding and respect for those whose values, behaviour and faith differ from their own.

After a shared meal, the students broke into small groups and discussed their similarities and differences as young Australians and shared their thoughts on different social and moral issues.

For the 17 Scopus Year 11 students involved, the experience was both rewarding and insightful.

Pampered PetsStudents at our Fink Karp Ivany Campus love nothing better than to cuddle up to Snowy, Fluffy or Harry at lunchtime.

These three rabbits are just part of the menagerie of pets that live at the campus.

Milkshake and Magpie the guinea pigs, Itzsy and Bitzsy the mice, a host of chickens, two birds and a farm full of worms complete the residents of the FKI Pet Club.

Designed to encourage the children to care about other living creatures and to take responsibility for their daily needs, Pet Club allows students from Kindergarten to Year 3 to interact with one another as they feed, clean and care for the animals.

As part of the College’s PYP program, students take a global view and soon learn that the animals are dependent on them for their daily care. Under the supervision of staff, the students clean the cages, feed and groom the animals and take them to the vet if needed.

The students have even attempted to teach some of the animals to obey simple commands and perform tricks.

Eggs collected from the chickens are used in cooking each week and herbs and vegetables from the school’s vegetable garden are also used by the students. Planted according to the season, the students have grown parsley for model seders and are currently growing potatoes for their Chanukah latkes.

This year the College has been blessed with two significant bequests.

In the will of the late Rose Rosanove we learnt of her desire to provide annual needs-based scholarships for our students. By investing the generous amount we will be able to fund bursaries in perpetuity from the income received as interest. We will proudly award the Rose Rosanove Bursaries from the beginning of 2009.

The late Harry Betan bequeathed his significant legacy in memory of his family, the Family Betansky of London, which is how we will acknowledge his gift on our Bequest Honour Board. The College will also direct these funds to helping students in need. We also recognise the assistance of Prof. Peter Zablud as an Executor of this Estate.

Our newly created Bequest Honour Board will acknowledge all the thoughtful people from whose estate the College has benefited over the last decade and serve to remind us, on a daily basis, that their memory is indeed a blessing and an inspiration.

We also take the opportunity to publicly thank Morris Margolis and Henry Rubin who are the Trustees of the Julia Feitel Pearl Trust from which we receive a significant sum each year for the tuition fees of students in need.

Sadly, we could not thank Rose or Harry personally as we did not know of their intentions previously. By informing us of a legacy in your will, you allow us to thank you and show our appreciation by recognising your gift during your lifetime.

If you would like to consider making Mount Scopus College a beneficiary of your estate in some way, please call Marilyn Simon, Foundation Executive Director, who would welcome your enquiry in the strictest confidence and after discussion, can provide the appropriate wording for insertion in your will. Phone: 9834 0124.

Peace through natureIlana Meallem and Mutassim Abu El Hawa from the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies gave an inspiring presentation when they addressed Year 10 students earlier this term.

Ilana, an Israeli student and Mutassim, a Palestinian student, brought a positive message from a region where people of all faiths and backgrounds are working together to protect the environment.

At the Arava Institute in southern Israel, students work collaboratively to solve the environmental problems of the Middle East and hopefully bring peace at the same time.

Realising that nature is not bound by political borders, these students are taking a social approach to the environment by bringing people together to work for a common goal. At the same time they are breaking down barriers and creating a better understanding of each other’s culture and beliefs.

John Lenders visits

The Hon. John Lenders MLC, State Treasurer went back to the classroom recently.

During his visit to the College, Mr Lenders, a former teacher, taught a Years 11/12 Legal Studies class and spoke on the legislative process.

He described how ideas become bills and bills become laws and some of the difficulties encountered in the process. He gave examples of bills that had been passed as well as some that had failed.

A charismatic speaker, he held the class’ attention for almost an hour and happily took questions from students on all aspects of government life and responsible representation.

DANNY ELBAUM WITH ROMY KLOOGER, NATHAN SCHUTZ AND RUBY KALINSKI

From the PrincipalThe last few months have seen successful ‘Pre-Authorisation’ visits by representatives of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), who have reported approvingly on our readiness to become an authorised ‘World School’ next year.

The Primary Years and the Middle Years Programmes of the IBO not only ensure that teaching and learning in the College is of the highest quality, but also, in this increasingly global environment, enable our students to understand the various societies around them and of which they are a part.

As part of this process Scopus has recently played host to a group of Japanese students, and both communities of students were able to learn much from each other. A VCE Legal Studies class was addressed by the Treasurer of Victoria, John Lenders MLC, who explained first-hand about the electoral and political processes of our state. Two members – one Jewish and one Arab – from the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel addressed our students about their projects.

These are just a few of the many visitors that our students benefit from throughout the year. In this way our students become aware of the contribution that they can make to their communities – as members of the school, as Jews, as Australians and as citizens of the world.

Japanese could be heard loud and clear at school recently, as the College hosted nine students from The Australia Exchange Centre of Hokkaido, on the northern island of Japan.

During their 11 day visit the Japanese students, ranging from Year 7 to Year 10, were hosted by Scopus families and attended classes with their host brother or sister.

In addition to improving their English language skills and in-turn helping our students polish up their Japanese conversation skills, the visiting students gained a greater understanding of Judaism and Jewish culture.

Many experienced a traditional Shabbat with their host family and also enjoyed the opportunity to explore a little of Melbourne during their stay.

For our students, the experience of hosting a Japanese student allowed them to develop their own understanding of a different culture, as well as form strong individual friendships.

Japanese is taught as an elective subject from Years 8 to 12. This was the 14th annual visit by Japanese students to Mount Scopus College.

A charismatic speaker, he held the class’ attention for almost an hour and happily took questions from students on all aspects of government life and responsible representation.
