FORESIGHT IN ACTIONIn 2008, I decided to return to study through Clane Community School Adult Education to becomea Certified Accounting Technician. Three months after I started the course, I was made redundantand found myself in the unenviable position of job hunting. I was very lucky that it didn’t take melong to secure another position and my employer has since informed me that having enrolled in thecourse was the swaying factor in me getting the position. The teachers providing the course were firstclass; they were as committed to our passing our examinations as we were, on occasion giving uptheir own time to ensure we were fully prepared for our examinations. Deciding to return to studywas a major commitment but was well worth it. I would highly recommend this course.

NEWS & VIEWSNEVER TOO YOUNG

I had been interested in Counselling for quite some time but wasn’t sure how to studyit or even how or where to do a course related to it. However when I saw the Brochurefor Clane advertising a five week Introductory Course I jumped at the opportunity.Although it was only a five week course it was very interesting and went into greatdepth. My lecturer told our class about the NUI Counselling Skills course that washeld in Clane and which commenced in September 2010. I signed up straight away.

As soon as the first night of the year long course commenced I was very optimistic. When everyone was introduced to one another we all started to get along straight away. There was a great warmth about the group and I knew I had made friends for life.

We were taught the skills and attributes needed to become a good counsellor andalso did numerous interviews through the year as both counsellor and client. I got anextremely good insight into what would be required and got to study great people suchas Carl Rogers and Fritz Perls who are renowned in their field.

Throughout the year we had different workshops on topics such as addiction whichwas brilliant as I got to understand how and why people become addicted. Althoughthese classes are very important they are also great fun. There is also a group projectwhich is a compulsory part of the course. This is another great opportunity to see dif-ferent things such as suicide which we hear about every day. Also throughout the yearwe had guest speakers on different topics for example C.B.T. which is CognitiveBehaviour Therapy which I found fascinating and hope to have the opportunity tostudy further over the coming years.

After the Christmas holidays I realised that I wanted to go forward with my studieson Counselling. I found it very difficult to get into any course as age was against me– I am only twenty years old. I thought this was very unfair as I have a great passionfor Counselling. However, I persisted with it and applied to numerous colleges fornumerous courses and attended many interviews. My persistence paid off and as ofSeptember 2011, I will be taking my place in D.C.U. to study with A.T.I.Psychotherapy which is a four year degree course and which I am looking forward toimmensely.

From doing this course I have made some great friends and would not hesitate fora second in recommending this to anyone who is interested in Counselling. MyLecturer Rita Stanford was wonderful and gave me a lot of knowledge, help, assistanceand most of all great encouragement to follow my dream. She was without doubt myinspiration.

Darragh Horgan

I have to thank you for all your help with my son Darragh who enrolled in the fiveweek Introduction to Counselling Skills in Clane, then completed the NUI year longCertificate Course and has just successfully gained a place in DCU to complete thefour year Degree Course run by ATI Psychotherapy. Were it not for you pointing us inthe right direction we would still be in the wilderness!! My sincerest thanks to you fortaking my 'phone call 18 months ago and for all your help.
