Şcoala Gimnazială Ghindeni
Dolj County Located in the south-western
part of Romania, the Dolj county
extends between 44°00' and 44°30'
North latitude and between 22°00'
and 23°00' East longitude and is
crossed from the North to the
South by the Jiu river, actually
bearing its name: Doljiu means the
"Lower Jiu".
In this area there live about
700.000 inhabitants grouped in
two cities, five towns and 104
communes, 51 percent of the
population living in urban area.
Ghindeni is a village having around 1900 people.
It is situated at 20 km from Craiova city, Dolj county, in the SW of Romania.
People have different traditional occupations, many of them being involved in agriculture.
Ghindeni village is certified in historical documents before 1821.
Documents attest that, in 1907, villagers participated at the rural revolt, when some of them were killed.
The building in which functioned the first school in Ghindeni has been since 1850.
The “Sfântul Gheorghe
şi Sfântul Dumitru”
church, situated in the
central part of the
village, is also an
historical monument.
There are in Ghindeni two monuments, which honor the memory of the local heroes of the two world wars.
There is also the lordly house of Davidescu landlord, which is over 100 years.
In 2004 was built a new head office for the mayoralty (Town Hall).
In the village there is a House of Culture, where we can find a library and an assembly-room with 100 places .
THE SCHOOL
The students learn in two buildings:
The kindergarten has a space in the building of the mayoralty.
The 0-VIII grades are in another building which is made with the help of the community and finished in 1974.
The kindergarten
Children can start it at about three years old and can stay until they are six years old. Kindergarten is optional and typically lasts for 3 or 4 forms.
Ghindeni kindergarten has around 49 children, divided in two groups.
Primary and secondary levels The school has 8 classrooms, a
sciences laboratory, an IT laboratory with 15 computers and a project room.
The school has about 132 pupils, with ages between 6-15 years and there are four teachers at the primary school and ten teachers at the secondary level.
Primary Level
There are five grades, one for each level.
The first five years are taught by a single teacher for the most subjects.
Additional teachers are assigned only for a few specialized subjects: Foreign Languages, Introduction to Computers, Religion and Sports.
Secondary level
There are four grades having 72 students.
The pupils are taught Mathematics, Romanian Language, History, Geography, Art, Foreign Languages (French, English), Religion (orthodox), Music, Sports, Introduction to computers, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Technology and Latin language.
Extracurricular activities
The teachers and the students of Ghindeni School are involved in many extracurricular activities, like partnerships with other schools and cultural institutions.

In 2005, the school won a grant from “Rural Learning Program” led by the Education Ministry and World's Bank.
We had a special support from the Ghindeni mayoralty and the Local Council.
We made a project called “Info Magazin”, the community newspaper.
The European dimension of the school
From the school year 2005-2006, the Ghindeni School has been involved in international cooperation, in the Long Life Learning Program, the Comenius Program.
“Family Folklore and Traditions”
Two teachers participated in October 2008 at this course, in Malta.
In 2009, a teacher participated at a Comenius course, “Curso de reciclaje para profesores de espanol”, Valencia, Spain.
Teachers of our school participated in three preparatory visits, in Germany, Portugal and Romaniua, in order to make Comenius multilateral partnerships with schools from Europe. And they were successful with the projects G.A.M.E.S. and H.E.L.P.
