Sahadevan Overcoming resistance to change and power of the mind at work Most corporate change initiatives are met with tremendous resistance and, not surprisingly, they do not succeed. Accordingly, managers and leaders need to learn why this is so and what to do about it. Change is felt on a personal level. Unless organizations address the biological and emotional responses to change, they will continue to fall short of their attempts to lead successful change initiatives. Alternatively, when leaders proactively focus on how change affects the human system and how employees are impacted, they are more likely to learn how to listen to the resistance and speak the language that supports change. Employees generally do not have all the information to understand why the threat (change) is happening. Because they lack this information, they tend to think in a way that obstructs the change and it contributes to multiple levels of resistance. They quickly direct their energy toward protecting the status quo. When employees create stories without knowledge, (which aren't always accurate) to justify the change and they spread misinformation across informal networks within the organization, it results in negative energy. And like the Titanic, which couldn't be stopped in time once the iceberg was spotted, the momentum of negative energy surrounding the change initiative cannot be halted quickly. When employees feel threatened, they are more likely to leave the organization or they seek to other departments not affected by the change. With key talent depleted, the change initiative ultimately fails. To achieve success with change initiatives, modify the way employees think and feel about change. One way to accomplish this is by enabling employees to self-discover the benefits of the change initiative through focused communication. The ultimate solution is focus. Detailed attention reshapes the patterns of the brain, leading to less discomfort associated with the threat or change and the creation of new behaviors. Today's organizations are comprised of multiple-generations, including Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation Y, and Gen. X. Each of these has a unique perspective and method for approaching organizational change. For A two-day International Marketing Conference on 'Building Customer Trust' (ICBCT2013) was held at SCMS COCHIN School of Business th th campus at Kalamassery on 6 and 7 of December 2013. Mr.Vijay Vijayshankar (Global Vice President, SAP Big Data Division, Arizona, USA) inaugurated the conference. 'Social networks are the ultimate platform to interact and share yourself in the present scenario to build a concrete relationship in any job sector,' he said. 'This is a self introduction to enter the world market to promote the business relations,' he added. Dr. Padmakumar Nair (Director, Thapar Group of Institutions) spoke on 'Trust, Transaction Cost and the Tragedy of Theories.' Mr. Ajith Sundaram's article titled “Can Social Networking Keep Students In School? A Proposal for an Ideal Social Networking Site for an Educational Institution” has been published in Zenith International Journal of Business Economics and Management Research, December, 2013 issue. Mr. Anand Sasikumar, Assistant Professor, has been awarded Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering on November, 2013 by Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. Mr.Jomy Kuriakose, Councilor, Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre (ICTC), District Hospital, Aluva addressing the B.Com students on Aids Day on HIV awareness. There was also a positive mentoring session by Mr. Aboobackar, Member of 'Prathyaasa' on the same day. Aids Day Awareness Programme Awarded Doctorate Prof. Indu Nair, Director, SCMS School of Technology and Management, has been awarded PhD in the area of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) for her thesis "Acceptance of Technology as a Teaching Tool Among Teachers: A Structural Equation Modeling of an Extended Technology Acceptance Model" submitted to Dr. MGR Education and Research Institute University, Chennai. Mr. R. Sujith, Assistant Professor-ME, presented a paper titled ‘Neuro- Fuzzy based simulation and experimentation of soft material cutting using a Cartesian robot’ in the International Conference on Precision, Meso, Micro and Nano Engineering, COPEN-8 held at NIT, Calicut during December 13-15. A chapter titled ‘Similarity Measure for Obfuscated Malware Detection’ in the book Information Security and Diversity published by IGI Global publishers was authored by Dr. Vinod P. On the other hand, Generation Y employees prefer the immediacy of technology that offers remote social networking. They like to get and give information quickly, whether through podcasts, texting, or the use of popular social networks like Facebook, Yammer, and Twitter. Incorporate the subtle differences among these groups into change initiative plans to decrease resistance and increase acceptance. Coaching assists employees to shift their thinking out of their comfort zones and normal habit-forming behaviors in order to form new ideas and actions. Coaching does not involve telling employees what to do or giving them all the answers. Rather it creates a space where employees use self-discovery and understanding about what keeps them from learning, growing, and achieving success. In this environment, they own the problem and the solution. They are more willing to put forth the effort to achieve success. They understand the bigger picture of the change initiative, how they fit in, and how their contributions matter. When change programs succeed, energy surrounds the organization. New ideas sprout up, and projects move forward with ease. They expend energy in a positive way because they feel validated and needed by the organization. They sense the organization is taking their needs into consideration during this transition, and therefore feel less threatened, safe, and comfortable again. When the different aspects of individuals: habits, brain function, and comfort levels of the change initiative are considered and incorporated into the plan, the organization will have taken the necessary steps to facilitate an energetic and successful transformation.     Overcoming resistance to change and power of the mind at work

    Most corporate change initiatives are met with tremendous resistance and, not

    surprisingly, they do not succeed. Accordingly, managers and leaders need to

    learn why this is so and what to do about it. Change is felt on a personal level.

    Unless organizations address the biological and emotional responses to

    Innovation and Youth Participation' was held at SCMS campus at th th

    Innovation is a constant process of bringing changes to make it useful to

    the society, Dr.Nayar remarked in his inaugural address. SCMS was

    chosen as the venue of the seminar in South India. 200 delegates from

    various institutions participated. The SSET students, Preet K. Lawrel

    (BTech, Civil) and Ashly Mary Mammen (MTech Environmental) rd

    have been selected for the Yuva Meet 2014 to be held in New Delhi on 3 th

    and 4 of February. Vishnuraj K.(BTech Civil) and Ashly Mary Mammen

    (MTech) have been awarded prizes in essay writing and poster designing

    respectively.

    Dr. M.P. Sukumaran Nair, former Special Secretary, Government of

    Kerala and Director, Green Technology and Management, delivered the

    key note address. Prof.M.Madhavan, Director, SSET, Ms.Avanthi Roy

    Basu, Associate Fellow and Area Convener, TERI, Ms.Harika Reddy,

    Research Assistant, TERI, Ms.Pavithra Jadav, Research Associate,

    for Heritage Environment and Development of Cochin Corporation,

    Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, Prof. C.K. Rajan, Director CSWTM and

    Chair for Climate and Environmental Changes, SCMS and Mr. C.

    Jayaraman, Senior Manager, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, were

    the speakers in the various sessions of the two day conclave. Dr. K.

    Paulose Jacob, Pro Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and

    Technology was the chief guest in the valedictory function and he gave

    away the prizes. Prof.K.J.Paulose, Dean, SCMS chaired the sessions as

    the moderator.

    SCMS Group of Educational Institutions signed a Memorandum of

    Understanding with People's Friendship University, formerly Patrice

    Lumumba University in Russia, for academic collaboration for a wide range

    of programmes. As per this agreement student of SCMS can go over to

    Russia and join the University for one more year of study in Engineering

    and obtain a B.Tech. degree of the PFU in addition to the BTech, they have

    already secured from SCMS. Engineering is a five year programme in

    Russia.

    Exchange of students and faculty also is envisaged under the agreement.

    The dual B.Tech. from India and Russia will provide wide range of

    opportunities for jobs in Russia where technically qualified professionals

    are needed in large numbers. As a policy, the Russian Government

    welcomes technically qualified professionals from India. This was

    disclosed by Dr.Nikolay Kislyy, Dean of the University, after signing the

    agreement. He said that the University and SCMS would redesign the

    syllabus and course of study to suit the requirements of the Russian

    industries once this agreement becomes operational. Dr.Pradeep

    SCHOOL OF BUSINESS were present on the occasion. Dr.Nikolay Kislyy

    visited SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, the Biotechnology

    Research Institute (SIBB-R&D), and the SCMS School of Engineering &

    Technology of the Group and expressed great appreciation for the high

    quality of infrastructural facilities provided. The MoU is the fruitful

    culmination of the academic initiative taken by Dr.Pradeep P.Thevannoor,

    Vice Chairman of SCMS Group.

    The Russian Ministry of Education has already agreed to grant

    equivalence to PGDM Programme of SCMS and also M.Sc, MTech

    Programmes of SCMS Institute of Bioscience and Biotech Research and

    Development. (SIBB R &D) equivalent to the Degrees awarded by Russian

    Universities. The Government has also in principle agreed to accredit the

    PGDM of SCMS as it already has International Accreditation from ASBSP,

    USA.

    November 2013. They visited the Excon

    International Construction Equipment and Technology Expo and Bharat

    Electronics Ltd (BEL). The team consisted of 21 students along with two

    faculty members, Prof.Srikrishnan S. and Mr.Prakash George.

    SSTM Bags Two Overall

    Championships

    The junior batch of 15 MBA students from

    SCMS School of Technology and

    Management have bagged overall

    championship in COM ARENA 7.0, a Management Fest organised by

    St.Thomas College, Palai on 7th December 2013. 52 Colleges

    participated in the fest. The Best Management Team which won the first

    prize comprised Jerin Thomas, Nikhil Reji Varghese, Abhilash Nair,

    Jerin Baby, Yadu Krishnan,Vinay Krishnan. Nawaf Musawa secured

    First prize in Best Manager category.

    A total of 54 colleges from all over the country participated in the event.

    The team (Anoop M.S., Sona Mathew, ChristinaT.V, Anu M.Nair) got first

    prize in Finance Game. Shreejith Vijayan, Joy Peter, Vishnu G., AthiraG.

    Won the 2nd prize in Marketing Game. Anulakshmi was adjudged the Best

    Manager.

    was crowned the 'Emperor of Thrones.'
