Directions for questions 27 40: Read the passages given below and answer the questions with the mostappropriate choice.

    Passage 1

Its not just the companys financial health that makes it to boardroom discussions. In the highlycompetitive business world, healthy employees mean a lot as well. Realizing this, many corporate houses

in the city have now chalked out comprehensive health programmes as part of their executive well-beingplan. In an era of globalization and competition, corporate houses have realized the importance ofhaving a healthy workforce. So many companies have now introduced health programmes for their

executives, says Dr Motia Talapada from a multi-specialty hospital.

Doctors agree that due to long working hours and irregular eating habits, most executives are nowsuffering from hypertension, headache, fatigue, and exhaustion. With competition increasing by the day,

its tough for the white collared workforce. In addition, the IT revolution has brought about many changes

in offices, says Ankur Dave, who has been working closely with a number of corporates on health plans.

For people in the hospitality industry and call centres, the work involves a shift system too and irregularworking hours means going against the biological clock. Stress is the silent killer for young pros. Most ofthem have lifestyle problems. Interestingly, many pros also take to smoking under the pretext of work

pressure, says Dave. Tarun Patel, medical officer with a multinational company couldnt have agreedmore. Healthy employees contribute to the growth of the organization. Apart from regular health check-

ups, we have other programmes like yoga and meditation workshops for executives, says Patel.

A leading telecom company recently organized an obesity detection and ophthalmology camp for its

employees. Apart from having a gym, we also conduct regular classes in yoga and aerobics to keep ouremployees fit. Lectures and workshops also create awareness, and official of the firm said. Food too has

come under scrutiny. An oil-company now has introduced low-calorie lunch for its personnel.

But sometimes even such preventive measures cannot safeguard employees from mental strain. Small

wonder then that some firms are now organizing counseling sessions for employees. Though we havestarted operations recently, we are in the process of formulating a health programme for our staff.

Employees health matter for the companys performance in the long run, says Chris Robinson, head of aBPO. Pumping iron and building muscles might not be everybodys cup of tea but staying healthy is

certainly the mantra for staying in business.

    27. According to the passage, which of the following is not one of the factors that lead to ill-health?

    1. Long working hours.2. Irregular eating habits.

    3. Increasing competition.4. The biological clock.

    28. Which of the following is not the industry that has affected the work culture?1. BPOs 2. Hospitality. 3. IT industry. 4. Telecom.

    29. According to the passage, why has counseling been introduced in the corporate sector?1. To safeguard the employees.

    2. To protect the employees from physical strain.3. To safeguard the employees from mental strain.

    4. To create awareness.

    30. According to the passage, why is the health of employees a concern of an institution?1. Because the companies have to pay for the illness of the employee.

    2. Because healthy employees perform better for the organization.3. Because an organization with unhealthy employees cannot make it to the boardrooms.

    4. None of the above.

    31. Which of the following word is the antonym of sketchy?1.Comprehensive. 2. Fatigued. 3. Scrutiny. 4. Prevention.

    Passage 2

If we are what we eat, we are in for big trouble. Much of our food and water is contaminated by a host ofpesticides for which no safety limits have been set. The consequences can be devastating. Lets look at

just three of the 40 most commonly used pesticides in India. DDT causes liver cirrhosis and endocrine

and reproductive organ damage, among other things. Endosulfan suppresses the immune system, affectsthe kidneys, causes, foetal disorders, and increases the chances of cancer. Lindane causes chronic liver

diseases. All of them cause learning disabilities and diminished mental capacity in children. So we shouldtake serious note of the fact that very few new and improved pesticides are being registered and that weare making do with old ones with no clue as to what the maximum residue limits (MRLs) are. This

despite the fact that 99% of deaths from pesticides poisoning each year take place in the developingcountries.

Each day brings some new terror to light. First, we found that the mineral water, which we believed to be

totally safe, contains high levels of toxic matter. Now popular soft drinks are found to be contaminated.

The ministries of agriculture and health are at each others throats on how to handle and take ownershipfor the industry data needed to set MRLs. The result- we are still to ascertain how many pesticides are

actually in use. The public, too, is totally apathetic to such a serious issue. If the developed countries arebetter off than us, it is also thanks to vigilant consumers. Though few and far between, farmers who havetried raising pesticide-free crops have reported astonishing success. This should be popularized both by

the government and the media. Otherwise, the cost in terms of damage to both the environment and ourhealth will be simply too high to bear.

However, there is the other view that blames us for teaming with alarmists riding their favourite

bandwagon of fear. They are now trying to push consumers away from foods crucial for a healthy diet in

a developing country. Forget maximum residue limits. If some environmentalists had their way, theywould probably lobby for the abolition of tractors, saying that their diesel emission causes pollution.

Elsewhere in the world, too, these same type of environmentalists have, in the past, launched campaignsagainst even the limited use of pesticides, inorganic fertilizers, and other farming technology in places

that needed them most- like Africa. As a result, many international agencies, including the World Bankand many European nations, turned away from supporting science-based agricultural intensification

programmes so urgently required in the sub-Saharan regions. Therefore, food production in Africa is in an

    abysmal mess.

There have been enough examples of the negative effects of such campaigns in India as well. Alarmistsrang dire warning bells before such hugely successful ventures as Operation Flood. At the beginning ofwhat ultimately turned out to be the Green Revolution, we heard similar warnings of doom. But we heard

nothing of these Cassandras when Indias wheat production increased almost six fold- thanks in great partto the judicious use of pesticides- making itself sufficient in cereal production. If in spite of this, our food

stuff was unsafe to eat, Indians would hardly have increased their life expectancy span from 48 in 1950 to

    SNAP SHOTS 2010 (3)

over 61 at the present time. Nor would todays children be healthier, taller and arguably, more intelligent, adaptable, and multi-talented as compared to their parents. Sound scientific analysis should be thefoundation of food safety regulations, not irrational paranoia. Proper hygiene and preparation of food and

drink are all that is required for a healthy diet.

    32. According to the passage, what is the problem with a lot of food that we eat?1. It is not safe.

    2. It is contaminated by unsafe pesticides.3. It can be harmful for the liver and reproductive organs.4. It causes all the pesticide deaths.

    33. According to the passage, what is the impact of pesticides on children?1. It causes chronic liver diseases.2. It causes foetal disorders.

    3. Both 1 and 2.

    4. It causes learning disabilities and diminished mental capacity.

    34. According to the passage, how can pesticide-free farming be popularized?1. By the government and the media.2. By the media alone.

    3. By the government alonne.4. None of the above.

    35. What is the difference in the attitude of people in the developing and developed countries?

    1. The people in the developed countries are more educated.

    2. People in the developing countries are more aware consumers.3. People in the developing countries do not pay attention to serious issues.

    4. People in the developed countries are more aware.

    36. What is the plea of the supporters of the judicious use of pesticides?

    1. Properly cooked food can disintegrate the pesticides.2. People are causing unnecessary alarm.

    3. Pesticides, judiciously used, are not harmful at all, but can be beneficial.4. Pesticides are not harmful; this is just a false alarm.

    Passage 3

For adults, at least, the effect of these changes is a mixed bag. Research suggests that on average, marriedcouples live healthier, wealthier, and happier lives, but no one claims that men and women benefit form

being trapped in bad or abusive marriages. Certainly the decision of increasing number of Americans todelay marriage makes sense; not only does todays information economy demand more time in school,

but studies show that couples who wait until their late twenties or thirties to get married are more likely to

stay married than those who marry young.

Whatever the effect on adults, though, these trends havent been so good for our children. Many singlemoms- including the one who raised me- do a heroic job on behalf of their kids. Still, children living withsingle mothers are five times more likely to be poor than children in two-parent households. Children in

single- parent homes are also more likely to drop out of school and become teen parents, even whenincome is factored out. And the evidence suggests that on average, children who live with both their

biological father and mother do better than those live in stepfamilies or with cohabiting parents.

  • 7/27/2019 SCMHRD SM-3

    SNAP SHOTS 2010 (3)

In light of these facts, policies that strengthen marriage for those who choose it and that discourageunintended births outside of marriage are sensible goals to pursue. For example, most people agree that

neither federal welfare programmes nor the tax code should penalize married couples; those aspects ofwelfare reform enacted under Clinton and those elements of the Bush tax plan that reduced the marriage

    penalty enjoy strong bipartisan support.

Same goes for teen pregnancy prevention. Everyone agrees that teen pregnancies place both mother andchild at risk for all sorts of problems. Since 1990, the teen pregnancy rate has dropped by 28 percent, anunadulterated piece of good news. But teens still account for almost a quarter of out-of-wedlock births,

and teen mothers are more likely to have additional out-of-wedlock births as they get older. Community-based programmes that have a proven track record in preventing unwanted pregnancies- both byencouraging abstinence and by promoting the proper use of contraception- deserve broad support.

    37. What kind of household does the author come from?

    1. Stepfamily.2. Two-parent household.

    3. Teen parents4. Single-parent household.

    38. Out of the following, which is not listed as a problem related to teen-pregnancies in the passage?1. They place the mother at risk.

    2. Children living with teen mothers are five times more likely to be poor than children in two-parent households.

    3. Teenage mothers tend to have more out-of-wedlock kids as they get older.

    4. They place the child at risk.

    39. Which one of the following inferences can be drawn about the statement: couples who wait.more likely to stay married than those who marry young?1. They are likely to stay married because they are in an age where they cannot be alone.

    2. They are likely to stay married because they have children and they cannot abandon them.3. They are likely to stay married because their decisions are more practical and less impulsive.

    4. None of the above.

    40. The author is in favour of all of the following except:

    1. Penalizing of married couples by the tax system.2. Community-based programmes.

    3. Policies that support marriages.4. Reducing teenage pregnancy rate.

    7. 4.In the forth sentence, the word turn has been used incorrectly because the correct phrase wouldhave been that, his fortunes took a turn for the worse.

    8. 2.

    9. 3.The 1st sentence is a typical example of a squinting modifier, as the adverb only doesnt seem to

define the right word; similarly, the 2nd

sentence, has an error of tenses, had sang should beinstead had sung; the 4th sentence too, has a tense which is not exactly required for the sentence,

i.e., Past perfect continuous is only to be used when there is a duration of time which is mentioned.

    of merriment at the party.

    14. 4.Glass is a material noted for its translucence; metal is noted for its luster.

    is belligerent or war-like.

    18. 1.

The words observant, abiding and adherent all refer to one and the same attitude of beingwithin the rules or observing the laws and norms; while the word maverick suggests a person who

does not abide by the rules and makes his o0wn rules.

    19. 3.

    The 1st

2 sentences suggest that the depression symptoms exist in the doctor rather than in thepatient, and thus, are incorrect; same goes for the last sentence.

    20. 2.When an illegal immigrant is challenged by the guard it means that you ask for identification; when

someone challenges someones claims, then challenge means that your viewpoint is an exceptionto the others; in the sentence, They reacted irrationally to the challenge of Russian power,

challenge means a demanding situation; and, challenging an assumption is to question a statementand demand an explanation.

    21. 3.In the first sentence, it should be One of the students in this room is responsible instead of are

responsible. While in the last sentence, it should be my favorite breakfast includes instead ofinclude; because breakfast here is a collective entity treated as a singular subject.

    22. 3.In the 2ndsentence, instead of the phrase, not-haves, the correct phrase should be have-nots; and

in the last sentence, instead of the word belittle the correct word should be belittled.

    23. 4.The situation in the stimulus is that vervet monkeys use different calls depending on where

predators come from. The correct answer must explain why the calls are different (again, difference

versus similarity is an issue). Note that the stimulus does not contain a true paradox, just an oddsituation that is presented without explanation.

    32/46

    SNAP SHOTS 2010 (3)

Answer choice (A): This answer states that vervet monkeys vary the calls in order to indicate thenumber of predators, but the answer does not explain why different calls areused for land versus air predators. This answer is attractive because it

shows that different calls can be used to indicate different things, but it iswrong because it does not explain the behaviour of the monkeys as

described in the stimulus.Answer choice (B): This answer addresses only land-based predators and does not explain the

difference described in the stimulus.Answer choice (C): This answer states that the predators using land attacks are different from

the predators using air attacks, but this information does not explain why

vervet monkeys use different calls to indicate that fact.Answer choice (D): This is the correct answer. Because vervet monkeys react to predators in

different ways, they would need to know if the predator was coming by landor air. Hence, the different calls are used to tell the monkeys whether they

should climb trees or dive into the foliage. Since this answer explains the

behaviour of vervet monkeys, this answer is correct.

    24. 3This is very simple. The question which three terms when asked to a can be answered by d. Soda is concomitant which is there in only one answer choice c.

    25. 2

The quickest clue is the he of b who can be none other than Robert Winston of c; so cb isconcomitant. This eliminates answer choiced. Two of the remaining answer choices start withd

and one with a. Only a glance should tell us that d should be the first sentence, but if you still

want to confirm then the but of a is in contrast with d as in the 21stcentury genome is

important as against what it was during much of the 20

    th

century. So da is concomitant. Thisitself gives us the answer choice b.

    26. 4.Since it is a hidden assumption question, we can simply reverse the so-called assumptions given tous and see if doing so really brings down the logic given in the paragraph.

From this perspective, reversing the first option does not necessarily negate the logic in theparagraph because if we note carefully, the cos. are doing so to in order to improve businessvolumes. They would like to improve volumes by discounting their prices. Whether more volumes

always result in more profits is an idea NOT entirely beyond doubt.Since the question talks of only life insurance policies, other policies are of little concern here.Similarly, option 3 could be faulted as the source of the policy premium is of no concern here.

The best answer is option 4 since if we reverse it, it will lead to the conclusion that lesser prices donot result in more policies being sold. In the absence of such a situation, how will the cos. hope toimprove volumes? Thus if they decide to decrease the prices of their policies, it is definitelyassumed by them that more people will buy them, and it will certainly add to their volumes.

    27. Option 4The first three options can be located in the lines: Doctors agree that due to long working hours

and irregular eating habits, most executives are now suffering from hypertension, headache,

fatigue, and exhaustion. With competition increasing by the day, its tough for the white collared

    workforce. The 4th

option is actually not stated as an ill effect. Going against the biological

shift system too and irregular working hours means going against the biological clock.

    29. Option 3The answer can be found in the lines: But sometimes even such preventive measures cannot

safeguard employees from mental strain. Small wonder then that some firms are now organizing

    counseling sessions for employees.

    30. Option 2The answer can be found in the lines: In an era of globalization and competition, corporate houseshave realized the importance of having a healthy workforce. So many companies have now

introduced health programmes for their executives,

    31. Option 1Sketchy means giving only major points; lacking completeness. Its antonym will be

comprehensive, which means including all or everything.

    32. Option 2

The answer can be found in the lines: If we are what we eat, we are in for big trouble. Much of ourfood and water is contaminated by a host of pesticides for which no safety limits have been set. The

    consequences can be devastating.

    33. Option 4

The answer can be found in the line: All of them cause learning disabilities and diminished mentalcapacity in children.

    34. Option 1The answer can be found in the lines: Though few and far between, farmers who have tried raising

pesticide-free crops have reported astonishing success. This should be popularized both by the

    government and the media.

    35. Option 4

The answer can be found in the line: If the developed countries are better off than us, it is also

    thanks to vigilant consumers.

    36. Option 4Refer to the lines: Many single moms- including the one who raised me- do a heroic job on behalf

    of their kids.

    37. Option 2

The fact given to us in the passage is follows: children living with single mothers are five timesmore likely to be poor than children in two-parent households. Although option 2 might seem

probable, still we cannot be sure about it as it is not explicitly stated in the passage. Also rememberthat we need to identify a problem related to teen-pregnancies which is not listed in the passage. This clearly makes option 2 the correct answer as the other options are clearly mentioned in last

    paragraph of the passage.

    39. Option 1Option 4 actually states the opposite of what the author is in favor of and hence is the answer.

    40. Option 4Abstinence means The act or practice of refraining from indulging an appetite or desire, especially

exterior angles of the polygon are of 36 degrees each. Angle ALJ = 180 36 36 = 108 degree

So angle JLM = 180 108 = 72 degree. In the same way angle JKM is of 72 degrees. Angle LJK = angle

    LMK and each are of 144 degrees. In quadrilateral JLMK = 360 72 72 144 = 72 degrees.

So sum of the all ten angles are 720 degree.

    We need to find integral solutions of equation 20 +10+5+ = 39We start with x = 0, then 10y + 5z + x = 39

    Here if y = 0, then 5z + x = 39, which has 8 integral solutions

    Or if y = 1, then 5z + x = 29, which has 6 integral solutions

    Or if y = 2, then 5z + x = 19, which has 4 integral solutions

    Or if y = 3, then 5z + x = 9, which has 2 integral solutions

    Next if x = 1, then 10y + 5z + x = 19, which will have 4 + 2 solutions when calculated in previous fashion

    l + 3s + 7b = 102

    l + 4s + 10b = 105

After equating both the equation we get

    1s + 3b = 3

    So 2s + 6b = 6

    l + 3s + 7b = 102, l + s + b + 2s + 6b = 102, so l + s + b + 6 = 102

    Therefore l + s + b = 102 6 = 96

    145. Solution: - Option no. 2

    Here we need to find 2l + 3s + 5b

    l + 3s + 7b = 102

    l + 4s + 10b = 105

    By adding them we get 2l + 7s + 17d = 207

    As solved in the last question 2s + 6b = 6, so 4s + 12b = 12(2l + 7s + 17d) (4s + 12b) = 2l + 3s + 5b

If it is 59, then also number of students is in fraction which is not possible

If it average is 61, then number of students is 11

If it is average 67, then number of students is 5

If it is average 71, then number of students is in fraction which is not possible.

So we cant uniquely determine the number of students.

    Using the statement B

If it average is 61, then number of students is 11

If it average is 67, then number of students is 5

And there can be other options which are possible.

    Using both the statements together.

If it average is 61, then number of students is 11

If it is average 67, then number of students is 5

    Hence option 1

    149.

    Solution: - Option no. 2

Using option A: The triangle is fully defined as the third side can be found using cosine rule. So length of

    the altitude can be found.

    Using option B:

If angle B is 90 degrees, and AD, CD are given, using similarity of triangles ABD and CBD, we may

conclude that AD/BD = BD/CD, given us the relation that BD2=AD.CD, using this we can find the length

    of BD.

So the question can be solved using either statement alone, hence option 2

    150.

    Solution: - Option no.3

The question can be solved using both the options together. Because using both statements together, well
