Message from the Executive DirectorDear SciWorks Supporters,

As the new Executive Director of SciWorks, I am honored to become part of one of the long-standing institutions in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The fiscal year 2011-2012 was the one that planted the seeds for a transformation as SciWorks approaches its 50th anniversary — 50 years of providing hands-on, interactive science for the children of Forsyth County and surrounding areas. And despite an ever-changing economic landscape, SciWorks is only becoming stronger. At the end of June 2012, Dr. Beverly Sanford retired as Executive Director of SciWorks. For 17 years Dr. Sanford did a wonderful job of both maintaining SciWorks’ place in the heart of the community and expanding the profile of the institution. This beloved institution owes Dr. Sanford a debt of gratitude for preparing it to fulfill its mission for the next 50 years. The 2011-2012 economic climate remained a challenge for SciWorks. The science center received funding from all three levels of government in North Carolina – city, county and state – for which we are very grateful. This funding has been reduced over the years, which has had an impact on programming and exhibit opportunities. Nevertheless, we continued to offer excellent school programs to students from counties all over western North Carolina and southern Virginia. Our school programs and our planetarium remained a strong draw and a reason that SciWorks remains the premier science center in the region. One of the most exciting events during the spring of 2012 was the opening of the Outdoor Science Park, the final component fulfilled from the 2006 “SciVision: Expanding Our Horizons” capital campaign. Featuring big, bold, interactive exhibits, this project was supported with a $150,000 grant from the Institute of Museums and Library Services from their Museums for America program, as well as monies from BB&T, Southern Community Bank, Corning Inc. Foundation, the American Academy of Dermatology and L. M. Baker, Jr. Our special events, such as Science Cafes, Scout Camp-Ins and summer SciCamps, helped to bring science to a wider audience and kept the local community informed and educated about the research and scientific advancement happening right here in Forsyth County. As we move into the future, SciWorks is renewing its emphasis on the skills that we can provide children when they are visiting with their families or schools. These skills of innovation are so important to give the children that we serve the opportunity to imagine and succeed in a future world that we cannot currently predict. These skills include creativity by offering individuals the opportunity to learn about what they are interested in. Second is collaboration and working together in teams to solve real-world problems. Third is responsible risk-taking and getting every child to try something even though they know that they might not succeed the first time. Finally, there is perseverance and the opportunity for children to tackle a challenge repeatedly until they do succeed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many donors, well-wishers and the wonderful community here in Forsyth County for all they do to make SciWorks the special place that it is. I would also like to thank the staff and volunteers who work miracles every day to ensure that the children who visit have a terrific educational experience while also having fun. Your support and generosity keep the doors open for everyone to experience the opportunities that SciWorks provides. I am looking forward to a bright future with new challenges, new opportunities and a new SciWorks.

Annual Fund Donations from 7/1/2011 through 6/30/2012

The gifts of SciWorks’ Annual Fund donors

are important investments in our science

center and the thousands of students and

families who visit us each year. Because

of the financial investments of our many

supporters, SciWorks is able to provide

our community with informal, hands-on

educational programs and exhibits that are

not always feasible in a formal classroom

setting.

Thank you to our Annual Fund donors for

their generous contributions, their interest

in the science education of the community

and their confidence in SciWorks.

SciWorks … Where Innovation Begins 2012 June 14, 2012

In 2010, the SciWorks Board of Directors started a new fundraiser to inspire the community

and help highlight the importance of a science center in Winston-Salem, the City of Arts

and Innovation. The year 2012 marked the third annual “Where Innovation Begins” Dinner &

Presentation with a new twist — the addition of a live auction — that raised significant funds

for SciWorks’ educational programs and exhibits. The event was held at Forsyth

Country Club on June 14. Sarah Barnhardt, the on-field announcer for the

Winston-Salem Dash, was the evening’s emcee, and Dr. Patrick M. Lippiello,

Co-founder and Senior Principal Scientist at Targacept, gave the keynote

address entitled: “The Challenges of Innovation.”

SciWorks is very grateful for all the corporate support

and individuals who took part in this exciting event!

During fiscal year 2011-2012, SciWorks

increased the number of volunteers and

volunteer hours significantly, thus providing

adults and teenagers with more opportunities

to give back to the community and share their

expertise. In addition, the science center added

11 more counties to the number of counties

served and laid the groundwork for future

increases in student attendance. As with

many non-profits, the year proved somewhat

financially challenging, and SciWorks ended

the year with a slight deficit. The science

center continues to fulfill its mission while

remaining responsible stewards of the money

entrusted to us, and with new leadership in

place, the picture looks much brighter for fiscal

year 2012-2013.
