From the Head Master
Today is Doctors’ Day, the fi nal day of the Michaelmas term. The ceremony takes its name from those Doctors of Divinity, who from 1561, conducted an examination of the state of the boys’ learning on this day. Over the centuries, the ceremony has acquired a traditional form, beginning with a procession of the Livery Company and Governors into the Great Hall bearing posies of herbs and fl owers (believed to keep away the plage in Tudor England) and ending with the School Song and the national anthem.
It is with great pride that I cast an eye back over an extraordinarily productive few weeks. We have seen a wonderful school musical,
a stunning Autumn Concert, the best 1st XV rugby season in a decade and let us not forget the U17 national cricket success that accompanied the start of the year. Then there were the more poignant moments, such as the school coming together to pay tribute to the fallen of World War One, which serve to remind us all of how fortunate we are at Sandy Lodge. Most importantly the boys have thrived in the classroom and in so many other arenas - it is the combination of these which will forge their characters as they develop and mature.
While the snow put paid to our annual Carol Service on Sunday, the boys sang superbly at the
Vernon’s Service on Wednesday
where the Chamber Choir sang
in St Michael’s Church, Cornhill,
in the City. The programme
included ‘Noel!’ by Gordon
Thornett, ‘Benedicamus Domino’
by Peter Warlock as well as a new
composition by our Director of
Music, Mr Couldridge: a setting of
the medieval carol ‘Sir Christemas’.
I would like to conclude by
wishing all of those in the
Merchant Taylors’ community
a very Happy Christmas and a
prosperous new year.

MTS 1st XV – best season for a decade!
This WeekMerchant Taylors’
The MTS 1st XV have enjoyed a superb season, winning 9 of their 12 matches and playing some wonderful rugby into the bargain. Here is the report from their final match v St Albans. Lastly, very many thanks to all our parents who have supported the boys so magnificently on the touchline!
Win – 31-0
Tries: Salkeld (Mulcaster), Burling (Hilles), Yuen (Spenser), Heenan-Jalil x 2 (Manor of the Rose) Cons: Hart x 3 (Andrewes) MOM: All Upper Sixth Boys
On an emotional day for the U6th boys, we had one final match on Flagstaff. No opposition would have stopped the 1st XV freight train from rolling to its final destination. St Albans couldn’t provide any track faults and were blown away in every area. Captain Hunter Heenan-Jalil grabbed a brace of tries, to add to scores from Burling, Yuen and Salkeld. As ever Hart was reliable with the boot, adding three conversions. A group of great friends make the best teams, in this case the most successful 1st XV of the last decade. They have been a pleasure
to coach and learn from. A huge thank you to you all for the last five to seven years – you have created some wonderful memories.

Lower Sixth Former speaks on Fermat’s Last TheoremOn Friday 8th December, Udi Menon (Lower Sixth) gave an intriguing talk on Fermat’s Last Theorem. Fermat was a famous mathematician who deduced the result of the Theorem in 1656, but its proof eluded the brightest minds in mathematics for over 350 years afterwards. Fermat’s Last Theorem states there are no
integer solutions to the equation an + bn = cn for values of n > 2, and Udi lucidly explained how Sir Andrew Wiles proved Fermat’s Last Theorem by bringing together two disparate areas of mathematics. Furthermore, Udi demonstrated some combinations of numbers that nearly work in the equation, but end up being near misses. Finally, he
discussed whether or not Fermat actually had proof himself, even though he claimed he did. Maths Society is aimed at Sixth Formers intending to apply for mathematics at university, but the society is open to pupils in all year groups interested in the subject who are willing to learn or talk about different aspects of maths.

OMT Keval Dattani talks on a career in financePranav Samani (L6th) writes:
This week, OMT Keval Dattani returned to the school to give an insightful talk to keen economic students hoping to pursue a career in finance. This event was the first of many to be put together by the newly founded Banking & Finance Society (BFS), a partnership of elite economic students willing to take their knowledge of the subject to the next level.
After gaining a place at the prestigious University of Warwick to read Economics, Politics and International Studies, the eager Keval Dattani departed from Merchant Taylors’ in 2014 to embark
on a gap year to become a trainee at an investment management business, Schroders. This was as part of the Investment 20/20 trainee programme where he gained invaluable experience working for Schroders, something he explained was a key reason he has now secured a graduate role with Aberdeen Standard. This journey of plunging into the world of work at such a young age enabled him to gain a deeper interest in the field, which led to Keval participating in another two internships at other leading firms. Keval’s experiences brought about some intelligent questions from the students, many of who seemed interested in following his footsteps.
After describing his journey, Keval
shared a variety of tips and advice
regarding the application process of
studying Economics and the likes at
university, as well as certain ways in
how to successfully develop a CV.
Most notably, Keval encouraged
the students to attend Warwick
Congress, a conference that he is
part of the team organizing, and
to consider gap year programmes
prior to university.
On the whole, the interactive talk
was thoroughly enjoyed by the
students who were very grateful in
Keval returning back to Merchant
Taylors’.

The Chaplaincy CentreJames Fields, Chaplain, writes:
You will have noticed changes
underway as we reconfigure
the chapel, which is evolving
into a Chaplaincy Centre, a
space to be used by the whole
community. We hope to respect
its status as a place where over
many years people have offered
their worship, their prayers and
sought sanctuary, and continue
so to do.
The intention is that the many
facets of our community life can
be reflected in this sacred space,
but above all that the gift of our
human faith may be expressed
imaginatively and sensitively,
in manner reflecting the history and ethos of our school.
The journey is far from complete and most of the work will be carried out over the summer break.
Meanwhile, from the beginning of the spring term we are moving the short 8:00am Friday service to 2:00pm on Fridays. This opportunity for reflection will last ten minutes and is open all.
And, talking of journeys, here’s a poem by U A Fanthorpe that points us from Christmas to Easter. It’s called, simply, The Donkey…
No room in the inn, of course,
and not that much in the stable
What with the shepherds, Magi, Mary, Joseph,
the heavenly host –
Not to mention the baby using our manger as a cot.
You couldn’t have squeezed another cherub in for love or money.
Still, in spite of the overcrowding,
I did my best
to make them feel wanted.
I could see the baby and I would be going places together.
May Christmas bring peace, wisdom and hope to our world.

Phab ClubMTS has run a Phab residential week for 45 years. Last year, Phab expanded with the incarnation of Phab club, a fortnightly club designed to give disabled guests a chance to play with boys and girls their own age whilst giving their parents
a chance to have a short bit of
respite in our Lun.
We started with three guests
turning up to our first Phab club in
November 2016, and now, one year
on, have 44 registered guests on
our books with 18 guests attending on average each club session. Phab Club is especially impressive because it is run by Divisions and Fifth Form boys and girls from MTS and St Helen’s. We have over 50 student volunteers with more clamouring to join.

Geographical Magazine 2017/18This week the Geography Department launch their new-look Geographical Magazine just in time for the holidays. This has been a term’s labour of love from a very dedicated team headed up by Aditya Sharman, Rahul Gill and Aidan Ho in Divisions. With successful application to the school’s Development Fund, boys were able to present work submitted by pupils using a company design agency and printers to create a highly professional looking magazine. The theme for this academic year was ‘Change’ – very relevant in today’s study of Geography – and the editorial team incorporated photos and articles submitted by boys from every year in the school – including
Merchant Taylors’ Prep School – to refl ect topics such as demographic change, climate change, changing places and change over time. This copy also contains three interviews – one with a visiting professor - and a book review. The next copy will be produced next academic year so any current Fourths or Divisions wanting to be a part of this process should email Mrs Lemoine to be part of the team which will start work after summer half term 2018. Please do click on the link below to enjoy the layout and content of this publication and do share with friends and family.

Romeo and Juliet Mock TrialThe Fourth Form have been studying Romeo and Juliet in their English lessons this half-term. This week one class held a trial inspired by the Prince’s line at the end of the play ‘Some shall be pardoned and some punishéd’. Our prosecutors made strong arguments against defendants as varied as Tybalt, Lord Capulet and the Post Office. The jury ferociously debated who they found most to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s death. Next term the Fourth Form will be moving onto a classic prose text.

Young Enterprise team win award for Best InnovationIn the early hours of a cold Saturday morning, FLIPP assembled at the Marlowes Shopping Centre Trade Fair in Hemel Hempstead. As it was the first trade fair for our team, we were braced for the learning experience but also for the excitement of selling our product to the public for the very first time. Prior to the fair, our industrious production team worked late into Friday night, assembling over 100 FLIPP pens ready for us to sell on Saturday.
Our team arrived at the scene at 8.00am, so we had just over an hour to prepare our stand for the day - which was a swift and
efficient team effort, therefore we were all ready to sell at exactly 9.30am. Almost instantly, we had our first customer and we were able to make our first ever sale. Furthermore, we were the first team at the whole fair to fully set up our stand and make a sale. Our sales team for the first two hours (Younes Guezour, Arin Moskofian, William Milbank and Adam Chaudhry) did an exceptional job of attracting customers. By 11.30am we had made the most sales out of any team and made the most profit out of anyone at the entire fair. It was just the start we needed.
After a quick lunch, our sales team for the next hour (William
Milbank, Udi Menon, Rana Menon and Soneel Bhattessa) started where we left of and continued to attract several customers- giving us a beam of confidence as we were exceeding expectations. During this time, we were met by the five judges for the day, who encouragingly commented on our work as we explained to them about our product. At around 2.00pm, our entire team for the day gathered for our final 90 minutes of selling, and we all made useful contributions until every team at the trade fair was called upon by the judges for the award ceremony.
It was a pleasant surprise that FLIPP was given the prize for

‘Best Innovation’ and we finished the day as overall ‘Runners Up’. From our perspective, this was due to incredible teamwork and communication skills, as well as the commitment from the members
from our team who came to the fair on Saturday. We were then given some feedback from the judges, who told us what made our product unique and how we can improve for upcoming fairs. On the whole,
this was an enjoyable day for all of us, and we are all grateful for this wonderful opportunity to sell our product.

v St Albans 2nd XV
Won – 10-0 Tries: Finn McKenzie (Spenser), Tom Boyle (White)
The 2s eventually sealed a win over a resolute St Albans’ team capping what has been an impressive and enjoyable season. Whilst dominant in most facets of the game the 2s weren’t at their fluent best but the ability to ‘win ugly’ is a valuable one and two well-worked tries coupled with tenacious defence provided a deserved end to an excellent season. The statistics below reinforce the benefits of the senior squad training ‘as one’ and also serve to illustrate just what can be achieved when a group believe in, and play for, each other. For those moving into the U6th it is effectively now ‘half time’ and the boys should enjoy a brief break before the hard work begins ahead of next season. For those
who have now completed their final MTS Rugby Term, enjoy some 7s after Christmas and do keep playing at university and beyond. Gents, it has been a pleasure... P11 W7 L4 F204 A167
U16A
Lost – 15-21 Tries: Duce (Hilles), Fallowfield (Manor of the Rose), Lidstone (Walter) MOM: Oliver Gilbert (Spenser)
The final game of the season and a big occasion for these boys as it was their last performance as a cohort. The game was very even, with St Albans being marginally on top in the first half. I have mentioned many times in my reports that this group have something about them, that ability to fight hard no matter what the circumstances. The match against St Albans was no different and despite the loss they never stopped fighting from start to finish and took the game to the wire.
Before every game I ask the boys to give a performance and walk off the field safe in the knowledge that they have given their all - the result is just an added bonus. This is something that has surprised me the most as they can pull it off so regularly. As I said last week the senior season has begun and the boys must set their sights high and create some selection issues for Mr Mills next season. It has been an absolute privilege to get to know this group and learn more about them through rugby. The future looks bright and I am excited to see how they progress. Well done each and every one of you.

evenly matched teams. Despite conceding first, the U16Bs battled back to score two excellent tries from Paddy Green and Sam Bickerstaff, to leave the match poised at 12 -12 at half time. Merchant Taylors’ played with more width and ambition, dominating possession and territory for large periods; Dan Jones was excellent, as was Rohan Day and Ferdi Maintzer. Despite this, silly mistakes, needless penalties and turnovers at crucial moments meant that we were not able to keep the scoreboard ticking over in our favour, and eventually lost 12 - 26, when a 19-19 draw would perhaps have been a fairer reflection of the match. The team have been magnificent this season, and deserve plenty of praise for their skilful, team-oriented approach to the game. It has been a pleasure watching them develop
over the last few seasons.
U15A
Won – 54-7 Tries: Florestein x 3 (Spenser), Meneske x 2 (Walter), Shaikh (Hilles), Savage (Spenser), Lewis (Walter) Cons: Garner-Patel x 7 (White) MOM: Alexander Shaikh (Hilles)
The U15As managed to secure an unbeaten domestic season with a convincing victory over St Albans. The forwards won the battle of the breakdown with confrontational carries from Shaikh, cutting angles from Duggan, and twinkle toes from Horne. With support following the carriers into contact the backs were treated to a feast of quick ball. Garner-Patel and Florestein linked up intelligently in midfield to create plenty of chances, but
the support play in once behind
the defence proved too timid and
several scoring chances were
squandered. However, the elusive
running of Meneske and Lewis
ensured that the team still came
away with sufficient points to be
comfortable at half-time. With a no
kicking policy, this team forces the
opposition to make a vast number
of tackles and, as the boys have
found throughout the season, they
are rarely able to stay with us for
the full match. This again proved
to be the case, with Florestein
and Savage running in impressive
scores to bring the match to an
early conclusion. It has been a
hugely successful season for this
promising group and they are
playing a style of rugby well above
their years. What is even more
exciting is the fact there is still
plenty of room from improvement.

U15B
Lost – 34-47 Tries: A Singh x 4 (Spenser), F Akin (Spenser), A Brown (Walter) Cons: A Brown x 2 (Walter) MOM: A Singh (Spenser)
This was a fabulous but ultimately frustrating way to finish the season. A game of 13 tries showed that attack was dominant over defence and ultimately this is where the game was lost. Despite another 4 tries from B team sensation Anmol Singh (who finished the season with a staggering 17 tries), as well as great individual efforts from Fiyin Akin and Archie Brown, we conceded too many soft scores ourselves. We were not able to repeat the last minute heroics of last week unfortunately in a game we probably should have won. However, the team should be very proud of a really good season and I hope they can look back on the season with great fondness. Well done boys - I am very proud of your efforts and you should be as well.
U14A
Won – 36-15 Tries: Odejinmi x 4 (White), Caricati (Manor of the Rose), Gabbitas (Walter) Cons: Groves x 3 (Clive) MOM: Daniel Odejinmi (White)
‘At Christmas, cold and bitter days, when wolves live on the wind, within his house a person stays, by warming fires, the winter logs ablaze.’ So mused the rambunctious, troubled, brilliant poet François Villon in mid-fifteenth century France. Indeed, a smile might well have crept across his lips had he beheld the U14As’ last match of the season. It was both cold and bitter on Saturday. However, instead of warming themselves by the fireside Merchant Taylors’ decided to be the wolves who live on the wind and savaged a vaunted St Albans side who had only lost twice this season. The home team hurled themselves into the fray
with a stunning unity of purpose, carrying the ball hard, breaking the line and rocking their opponents back on their heels. The forwards bent the opposition pack out of shape at the ruck and in the scrum whilst the backs sliced through the defence utilising fleet feet and deft passing. This was a stellar, all-round performance by the U14As and ably demonstrated the great strides they have taken this season. Nevertheless, it would be remiss of me not to laud the irrepressible Daniel Odejinmi who scored four of the team’s six tries. He, alongside so many of this fine side, has been outstanding this term. They are a fit, focused and fearsome outfit who one hopes will continue to make great progress throughout the years. Merry Christmas to them all.

team, we can look back over the
season with a real sense of pride.
Well done this year gentlemen.
U14C
Lost – 7-38 Try: Mitul Matthews (Andrewes) MOM: Mitul Matthews (Andrewes)
This was a combative game, with
close contests all over the park.
Both the MTS and St Albans
packs knew their business well
and went at it hammer and tongs
in both the set piece and the
loose. For MTS the standout
performers were Mitul Matthews,
Kyri Matsangos and Eben Terry,
who carried, rucked and tackled
industriously all match. At times
our backs struggled to contain
the inventiveness of the St Albans
half backs; the valiant defensive
efforts of Oliver Mills, Lawrence
Farr, Rohan Dasgupta and Nayen
Chatrath kept us in the match.
In attack Charlie Clapham,
Rohan Dasgupta and and Rohin
Gossain made yards, but came up
agonisingly short of the try line.

Lost – 7-55 Try: A Meshram (Spenser) Con: E Horgan-Smith (Andrewes) MOM: Atharv Meshram (Spenser)
Looking to end the season with
what would be an uncharacteristic

try from Atharv Meshram under the
posts, smartly converted by Ethan
Horgan-Smith to give Merchant
Taylors a 7 - 0 lead. This was to
last for a significant amount of
time as each team battled for a
dominant foothold in the match.
The cold conditions resulted in a
number of knock-ons with MTS
frequently showing their strength in
the scrum. However, the lead was
not to last, and despite dogged
defensive work, St. Albans ran in
three tries before half-time, leaving
the score at the break 17 - 7. After
playing one of their best halves of
rugby all season in the first half,
The U14Ds could not maintain
their performance in the second
and succumbed to a rampant
St. Albans attack. They showed
great spirit however, and never
gave up despite the growing score
line. Regardless of the number
of defeats this season, the U14D squad have grown as a team and as individual players who have greatly improved as the season has progressed.

Indoor U18 Regional Finals
The Merchant Taylors’ U18 indoor
hockey side competed in the
East of England Regional Finals
competition earlier this term after
qualifying through as Hertfordshire
County Champions.
After only 8 weeks of indoor
training the side battled it out against a number of high-profile schools, including the likes of Norwich, The Perse and renowned national finalists Ipswich school. After impressing and brushing a-side The Perse the MTS side found themselves in a position to qualify for the National Finals.
So close but yet so far!
The MTS side knew they had to beat Ipswich to qualify for
the National Finals competition and dominated the early play managing to score a well worked goal. Ipswich struck straight back and the scores going into half time remained 1-1. Ipswich managed to score early in the second half and hold out after sustained pressure from the MTS side.
Congratulations to the group who will take this form into an exciting outdoor season with a lot of new young players.

Six boys travelled to the Lea Valley Velodrome on Saturday 10th December. The Taylors’ group consisted of Third Form all the way up to Upper 6th boys and the oldest competitor of the day was 91 years old; showing that rowing truly is a sport for all.
Our youngest competitor, Max Garvey, who had been on an ergo (rowing machine) for the first time this term came 16th in his 2 minutes race, rowing 416metres and obtaining a personal best.
Pritveer Bhogal beat a number of boys from rowing clubs in his
timed race and rowed 1234m in 5 minutes. Along with Max Garvey and Pritveer, Max Arlen also achieved a personal best on the day and managed to beat the 1500m mark with his 1531m in his timed race and a split of 1.41 for his 500m race later in the day. A great achievement for someone who only started rowing in September.
Daniel Lehmann in the L6th achieved another PB for the day and smashed his previous 2000m time with a fantastic 07:51.2
I am very much looking forward
to taking a larger group of
boys next year and competing
against the best rowing clubs
and schools in the country. It is
a great experience for the boys
as the GB teams compete on the
same ergos, as well as watching
Paralympians and soldiers injured
in service, racing with such
determination and passion.
We were lucky enough to see two
world records broken along with
two British records and some of
the boys watched the GB team
push themselves to the limit in
their 2,000m races.

Staff v Students SquashOscar Khoo (U6th) writes:
On Wednesday, the highly anticipated squash match between staff and students took place. The staff had high hopes yet were met with a 5-0 defeat from the students. Starting off was Kiyan Kassam vs Mr Innes which was a thrilling encounter. The rising star showed rapid movement and graceful scrambling to win 3-0. Up next was Will Berrecloth against Mr Charman. The
athletes did not stop to show all their excellence on court providing the quickest 3-2 I’ve ever witnessed. Berrecloth’s rage and determination fired him up and enabled him to nick the win. Harvey vs Garvey was up next and it provided an excellent battle between the two. In the end, it was Harvey’s power which helped him snatch the 3-0 win. Unfortunately, Mr Greenaway had an injury, so the new fixture was between Siddhant Patki
and Mr Coles. Mr Coles showed his brilliance with his deft touch however, it was Sid who showed his strength and power to provide another 3-0 victory. The pièce de résistance was a fiery encounter between me and the Head of English, Mr Hilton-Dennis. It provided an entertaining match of skill, sweat and passion. Overall, I’d like to express my gratitude to Mr Hilton- Dennis for organising this event and I hope this tradition will continue in the future.
