News about staff On March 28 th , Jan Vanstockem parcipated in the Falling Walls Lab compeon in Leuven. In this compeon, Jan and 14 other candidates had to present their research to a broad audience in 3 minutes. While Jan did not win the compeon, he succeeded in geng his message about the role of green roofs in breaking the wall of greener cies across within the me limit and with a lot of enthusiasm. Take a look at the the video and the pictures of the compeon here. The division welcomed several new colleagues in the past few months. Felix (Xu Fei) will be working on the automated mapping of impervious surfaces and urban green spaces. John Sekajugo has joined the division for a short research stay working on a paper on soil organic carbon stocks in Uganda. Ann Crabbé will work on a two-year project focused on translang algorithms of the STEREO II programme into open-source QGIS plugins. Germán Catalán, a student from the University of La Frontera in Chile, will work on his MSc thesis on the processing of UAV mulspectral images for the idenficaon of urban green structures. Paola Arroyo, also from the University of La Frontera, will work on her MSc thesis on post-fire plant recovery in Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in the China Muerta Naonal Reserve. Welcome Felix, John, Ann, Germán and Paola! From the press Bart Muys was featured in an article of the Flemish newspaper De Standaard on the forest cover increase in Europe during the last 100 years. He explained that not only the forest cover but also the forest quality matters, and that some primary forests in Eastern Europe are under great pressure. The article can be found here (in Dutch). Another De Standaard article cites some comments of Bruno Verbist on the purchase of some forests in Brussel by the Flemish government. The article can be found here (in Dutch).
