Bart Muys will be leading the third work package of the SINCERE Project, a new EU Horizon 2020 Project on innovations for
forest ecosystem services. Bart attended the kick-off meeting in Bonn on 24-25 January. More info can be found here.
Conferences, symposia & summer schools: On February 8th the National Symposium for Applied Biological Sciences was organized at VUB in Brussels. Bianca Drepper
presented her poster on “Can the Flemish hard fruit sector cope with more extreme weather events”. Floris Dalemans
presented his poster on a “Prediction model for the seed and oil yield of Pongamia pinnata”.
Awards and Achievements:
Floris Dalemans received the Sustainability Award on the National Symposium for Applied Biological Sciences for his poster
“Prediction model for the seed and oil yield of Pongamia pinnata”.
News about staff On March 28th, Jan Vanstockem participated in the Falling Walls Lab competition in Leuven. In this competition, Jan and 14
other candidates had to present their research to a broad audience in 3 minutes. While Jan did not win the competition, he
succeeded in getting his message about the role of green roofs in breaking the wall of greener cities across within the time
limit and with a lot of enthusiasm. Take a look at the the video and the pictures of the competition here.
The division welcomed several new colleagues in the past few months. Felix (Xu Fei) will be working on the automated
mapping of impervious surfaces and urban green spaces. John Sekajugo has joined the division for a short research stay
working on a paper on soil organic carbon stocks in Uganda. Ann Crabbé will work on a two-year project focused on
translating algorithms of the STEREO II programme into open-source QGIS plugins. Germán Catalán, a student from the
University of La Frontera in Chile, will work on his MSc thesis on the processing of UAV multispectral images for the
identification of urban green structures. Paola Arroyo, also from the University of La Frontera, will work on her MSc thesis on
post-fire plant recovery in Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in the China Muerta National Reserve. Welcome Felix, John, Ann,
Germán and Paola!
From the press Bart Muys was featured in an article of the Flemish newspaper De Standaard on the forest cover increase in Europe
during the last 100 years. He explained that not only the forest cover but also the forest quality matters, and that some
primary forests in Eastern Europe are under great pressure. The article can be found here (in Dutch).
Another De Standaard article cites some comments of Bruno Verbist on the purchase of some forests in Brussel by the
Flemish government. The article can be found here (in Dutch).
The e-zine “Bosrevue” of the Flemish NGO BOS+ published an article on wood production in Flanders featuring the Sim4Tree
decision-support tool developed by the division. Read here (in Dutch). You can subscribe to the “Bosrevue” here.
In other news The third newsletter of the H2020-project DAFNE in which the division (LandInforMan) participates is out, featuring colleague
Mulenga Kalumba. Read here.
