Learning Outcomes

•By the end of the class, my students will be able to :▫Formulate a scientific hypothesis▫Design a simple experiment based on the

formulated hypothesis

Start from an Observation: An ExampleHandphone’s signal drops when we enter the lift

Page 7: Scientific method: Testing Idea

Scientific Hypothesis and Experiment

• Hypothesis:▫ The signal inside a metal

lift is lower than inside other materials.

• Main criteria:▫ Test-able.▫ Test one idea only.

• Experiment:▫To test: Measure signal strength in a

mock up lift that is built using different materials (metals, wood, glass, etc).

▫Expected outcome: signal strength in metal mock up lift is lower than other materials.

• Test the hypothesis.

• What is the expected outcome? ▫ Accepting or rejecting hypothesis

More Examples

•Revising a hypothesis:▫There is no signal inside a metal lift.▫The signal drops when the handphone is

inside a confined lift and the lift is moving.▫Signal is low when the lift is far from the

repeater point.
