Science Week 2015
THE
EGGS FACTO
R
Did you know...?• 5 million different animal species on earth.• Over 50% are insects. • Less than 0.5% are mammals.• 97 % of all the animals on earth lay eggs.• Mammals that lay eggs are called
monotremes.
What will you learn? What is in an egg? What are eggs for? What animals lay eggs?
Eggs incubating at SJS.Cooking at home for everyone.Workshops for YR to Y5.Osprey presentation for Y6.Share our learning next Tuesday.
Welcome to...
What will the children learn?
• Knowledge and vocabulary – anatomy of an egg, about egg-laying animals and about their life-cycles, the wonder of eggs.
• Skills – observe, identify, describe, measure…
• ILIC Learning Habits – curiosity, originality, confidence…

Physics ideas
What is the ratio of number of eggs to kilograms held? How can you tell
if an egg is raw or cooked without breaking it?
What will take place?
• Inspiration and excitement! • Monday – start to feel very egg-cited about Science Week!• Tuesday 5th May 8:50am- 9:15am Whole school assembly
with the ‘Wild Science’ animals (fluffies, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates)
• Meet the chickens at St Michaels.• Incubator - in 6HB classroom throughout SW and until
they hatch. • Orientation and motivation!• Meet the animals for Years R – 5 throughout that day. See
timetable. https://stamfordendowedschools.sharepoint.com/staff/SJSStaff/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=%7B10971E9F-D6F8-4828-91EE-80F77A600AE9%7D&file=Wild%20Science%20%20timetable%205th%20May%2015%20Tuesday.docx&action=default
What will take place?
• Perspiration and focus! • Learn the function and anatomy of an egg.• Choose favourite animal from Tuesday and learn about
it’s life-cycle (pictures, dance, models, mind-map on iPad etc.)
• Do some chemistry and physics with eggs. • A whole school homework task to take Science Week
home .
What facilities and resources
do we have? • St Michael's chickens. • Incubator.• Outdoor areas• Parents connected with eggs and life-cycles? –
producers, farmers, vets, carers, medics; invite them in.
• Petty cash up to £10 per order – white vinegar, eggs etc. Ask Val for a form. £1.20 for a dozen Tesco value eggs.
Celebration and harvest
• Time to share each other's learning in class.• Read Dr Seuss books, poems that celebrate all
