Johnson STEAM Academy Magnet SchoolWelcome to Johnson STEAM Academy (JSA)! We are so happy that

you are a part of our learning community. Johnson is a special kind of school where learning comes to life. Here, children are valued as capable learners and honored for their gifts - no matter what they are. We help students own their learning through giving them structured choice, providing innovative learning experiences, and helping them to have a voice in their education.

Johnson opened their doors as Johnson STEAM Academy Magnet School in the fall of 2015. A Magnet School is a theme-based school, in Johnson’s case our theme is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). A Magnet School offers families a choice in the type of learning environment that they would like for their child(ren). While JSA remains a neighborhood school, some slots were made available for students whose families live outside the Johnson attendance area. These slots were filled through a lottery process.

It is the mission of JSA to guide all learners to discover their passions through innovative learning experiences. We teach STEAM content through an integrated approach using hands-on, project based learning to increase student engagement, daily attendance rates, and academic proficiency. We are igniting passion, cultivating, character, and helping students in achieving their dreams.

School HoursSchool hours are from 8:45 am to 3:45 pm. In the mornings all

students will enter through the front door. Breakfast is served from 8:15-8:40 daily. Classroom teachers will pick up their students from their arrival area at 8:40 to begin the morning procedures. All students arriving after 8:50 will be considered tardy and will need to stop in the office for a pass to class. PLEASE ensure that your child gets to school prior to the tardy bell at 8:50. Tardiness interrupts morning learning and starting the day off right.

Attendance: Everybody, Every Day!Johnson STEAM Academy expects positive daily attendance. All

students are expected to be at school on time daily. The more your child is in school, the better he or she will do socially and academically. Acceptable reasons for absence include:

IllnessProfessional appointmentFuneralReligious observanceCourt summonsPre-arranged family activity (reunion, wedding, etc.)

If your child will be away from school or late for school for any reason, call the office at 558-2174 or the Health Clinic at 558-2711 as soon as possible and let us know how long he or she will be gone. If you do not call by 10:30 in the morning an automated call will go out daily asking for the reason of the absence. Adults taking children out of the building during the day are asked to sign out in the office before leaving and sign the child back in if they return during the school day. Parents must call to have an absence excused. Students with 10 or more unexcused absences may be directed to District personnel for an attendance hearing.

NOTE: For your child’s protection, Johnson staff cannot release a child to anyone other than his/ her parent or guardian without written consent. If you plan to have your child picked up even once by someone else, please notify the office in writing or by adding them as a contact within PowerSchool.

Getting a Message to Your ChildIf you need to contact your child during the school day, call the main

office at 558-2174. To minimize disruption, messages are usually delivered during the last 15 minutes of the day (except in emergencies). We urge parents to take care of personal business before or after school.

Student and Family Support Services Support Services are available to JSA students and families. Our Learning

Supports Team includes our full-time School Counselor who provides a comprehensive school counseling program to all students through classroom guidance and small group or individual students as needed.

In addition, our Student Support Liaison and Abbe Mental Health Specialist are on-site and support students and their families by working to reduce barriers that may impact learning.

We also have two Four Oaks employees who work at Johnson to coordinate necessary supports. They also oversee the Achievement Academy, before and after school care that is housed at Johnson and is free to all Johnson families who apply and are accepted.

Page 27: Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics Calendar ...johnson.cr.k12.ia.us/assets/13/6/Johnson_handbook_16_17.pdfchild(ren). While JSA remains a neighborhood school, some slots

Assessing Student PerformanceThe single most important thing you can do to improve your child’s

performance is to take an interest in his or her schoolwork and help them to set goals. Involving children in setting goals empowers them to take responsibility for their own learning. Your student’s learning will be reviewed during Parent/ Teacher conferences twice a year. In addition to receiving your child’s report cards, you will also review samples of your child’s work at conference time. Johnson teachers use a variety of reading and math assessments to monitor your child’s progress throughout elementary school. In addition all students take the Iowa Assessments in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.

Proof of ResidencyAll new students entering the Cedar Rapids School District and

current students who move to a new residence must provide the proper documentation to establish residency. The name and address on these documents must match the name and address of the parent or legal guardian (or primary parent) of the student. If you move during the school year, please come to the office to update information as well as confirm your attendance area. Any questions feel free to contact the office at 558-2174.

School FeesA $28.00 consumable materials/book fee is assessed each student to

cover the cost of curriculum materials and related educational expenses.

In the event your check is returned it will be represented electronically along with the state fee.

Students that are eligible for free and reduced meals must also document and sign a waiver for school fees to be reduced or waived.

Dismissal ProceduresAll students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will dismiss from the Park Ave.

doors beginning at 3:45 p.m. and can be picked up there or on the playground. All 1st and 2nd grade students will exit from the playground doors directly onto the playground at 3:45. Kindergarten students will exit in the front of the building at 3:45.

On Line RegistrationPlease be sure to fill out the on-line registration required by all Cedar

Rapids Schools-you can access this from the Cedar Rapids Community School District web page under PowerSchool System or go to https://pscr.gwaea.org/public/ .

It is very important that you complete this process and continue to update as you move, change your phone number, emergency contacts etc. After your child is registered the information will follow your child through 12th grade and will not need to be re-entered by the parent except for updating. It allows parents to give release permissions for field trips, media releases etc. and is easy to do every year.

Celebrations and Special OccasionsWe realize that on special occasions you may wish to participate

in your child’s joy by sharing a form of recognition with them. Please follow the District and Building guidelines when bringing items to share to recognize your child’s special day.

JSA has been designated a Blue Zones School by meeting a series of wellness goals to achieve this designation. The Blue Zones Project is part of Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative. In addition, the District Wellness Policy spells out the guidelines that must be followed in all Cedar Rapids Schools.

In accordance with District policy and due to the fact that some of our students have food allergies or dietary restrictions we need family support. At JSA, we ask that if you wish to help your child celebrate your special day and have them bring something to share with the class that you do NOT bring food items to share with other students. Cupcakes, cake, candy, etc. can NOT be distributed to other students and will need to be sent back home. Instead, consider sharing items like pencils, bracelets, stickers, or purchase a book to add to the classroom library in your child’s name.

We will have 3 celebrations a year: one in the fall, one in the winter, and one in February. At that time, guidelines will be provided to ensure that we are promoting healthy eating habits in the school setting. In addition, as part of the USDA’s Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program all students at Johnson are offered a daily fruit or vegetable snack.

Page 28: Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics Calendar ...johnson.cr.k12.ia.us/assets/13/6/Johnson_handbook_16_17.pdfchild(ren). While JSA remains a neighborhood school, some slots

School ClosingsThe District provides in-service days to allow for ongoing staff training.

On early dismissal days, the school day ends at 2:15 p.m., after lunch has been served. In addition, some full days are set aside for the professional development of our staff. See calendar for specific dates.

In case of severe weather or other emergencies, the CR Community School District’s first concern is the safety and health of all children. Whenever possible, schools will open as usual and remain open to the end of the day. When the decision is made to close schools, delay buses or dismiss early, announcements will be made through the following sources:

School Messenger SystemDistrict Web siteAll local radio and TV stationswww.kgan.comwww.kwwl.comwww.kcrg.com

Want Automatic Notifications? It’s Easy! You can get reliable and timely information about school delays,

early dismissals or cancellations via e-mail. Just register with the district’s new Alert List Serve. You will automatically receive e-mail notification at home, at work or wherever you want the information sent (grandparents, babysitter, etc.).

To register, go to the District’s web page (www.cr.k12.ia.us), click on the Alerts and Cancellation line on the right hand side of the home page, and follow the directions.

By providing up to date phone contact information in PowerSchool, District calls related to the __________will also be sent.

VisitorsJohnson STEAM Academy welcomes parents and family members

of our students into our building. For student safety and to minimize classroom disruption, we encourage visitors to call ahead and make an appointment with the teacher to visit a class. In order to ensure student safety, it is imperative that all visitors to stop at the main office to sign in and for a guest badge upon entering the building.

VolunteeringVolunteering is one of the best ways to show your child that learning

is a priority and you value their education. You may choose to volunteer by helping out in your child’s classroom, support your child’s teacher by doing routine tasks for them, chaperone a field trip, reading to a child, or helping out in the art room. Whatever your time or talent may be, we will be happy to have your help. There is a volunteer form to complete for the district prior to volunteering. To volunteer, please call Johnson’s Volunteer Coordinator, Leah Ferring at 558-2174 or email [email protected].

We look forward to hearing from you!

Make an Impact Through PTAJohnson STEAM Academy is lucky to have a very

active PTA. In addition to hosting many events, the PTA raises thousands of dollars every year to support many other opportunities for our children. Please join the PTA, your voice matters. Contact the office at 558-2174 for more information on how to join.

Enrichment ActivitiesAgain this year Johnson will be offering a number of enrichment

activities to students. All activities will be held either before or after school. Enrichment activities may include dancing, sports, singing, design, computers, sculpture. Watch for a sign up packet to come home two times per year around the beginning of each semester.

Cafeteria InformationJohnson STEAM Academy qualifies for the Community Eligibility

Provision (CEP) for school needs. This means that all students at JSA will receive breakfast and lunch at no charge. Students wishing to purchase an extra milk or servings will be required to have cash or money in their account.

All meals are served in the cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 8:15-8:40 a.m. Lunch is served from 11:00-1:00 p.m. Your child’s specific lunchtime will depend on his or her class schedule, and will be communicated by your child’s teacher.

Visitor Lunch Prices are as follows:Adult - $3.50

Health ServicesThe CR Community School District’s health

services program is designed to help students maintain optimum health, thereby supporting student learning. The Health Services Department includes a health services manager, school nurses, and health secretaries. The school nurses are assigned to a number of buildings; nurses visit each building at least once a week. They are available by pager for questions at all times. In the absence of the school nurse, the health office is managed by a health

secretary who is certified in First Aid, CPR, and medication administration.

Head LiceThe Cedar Rapids Community School District would like to assist

its families in dealing with head lice by emphasizing prevention, early detection and education. This plan does NOT keep students out of school for lice, but emphasizes family and community education and assistance.

Students with signs and symptoms of head lice will be referred to the health office for evaluation. Parents/guardians of students, found to have live lice or nits (eggs) within ½ inch of the scalp will be notified and provided with information regarding treatment and management. In the elementary schools, families with a child in the classroom will be notified by a note from the health office along with information regarding identification and management of head lice.

Personal BelongingsAll personal belongings brought to school are the responsibility of the student. All items stored in lockers need to be permanently marked with

the student’s first and last names. Items include clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, boots, shoes, books, and notebooks. Lockers in the hallways are assigned. Communication: Home to School

Contacting Your Child’s TeacherQuestions, suggestions, problems should be directed to the person

in the position closest to the situation or concern. Positive and clear communication among parents, students, staff is a key element of a healthy and productive parent-school partnership. If you need to speak with a specific staff member at Johnson, please use one of the communication methods listed below that you feel is most effective:

• Send a note with your child.

• Send an e-mail message to the teacher, (keeping in mind that the teacher may not see it during the current school day because they are working with students and may not have a chance to check their messages until a later time that day or in subsequent days.

• Call the school. The best time to contact a teacher is between 8:00am and 8:30am, or from 3:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you call during an instructional period, office staff will give the teacher/associate a message so they can call you back as soon as possible.

Communication with Building AdministratorThe principal is responsible for the overall management of the

school and its personnel, including curriculum and instruction, student growth and problem solving, teacher support and evaluation, and implementation of district policy. If you have questions about any of these areas, don’t hesitate to contact the principal.

Johnson School Parent Involvement Policy

Title I

2016-2017

Cedar Rapids Community School DistrictIt is the policy of the Cedar Rapids Community School District that parents of participating children shall have the opportunity to be involved

jointly in the development of the district plan and in the district’s review process for the purpose of school improvement. Recognizing that parent involvement is the key to academic achievement, we seek to involve parents in an effective home-school partnership that will provide the best possible education for our students. The district provides coordination, technical assistance and other supports necessary to aid in the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities. The district encourages parent involvement and supports this partnership through providing information about standards and assessments; providing training and materials for parents to help their children; educating school personnel about involving parents and the value of parent contributions and developing roles for community organizations and businesses to work with parents and schools.

1. The jointly developed and agreed upon written policy is distributed to all parents through the Parent Handbook which is distributed to every family at the time of registration.

2. Johnson School will hold two annual family events, one in the fall and one in the spring. Notification will be sent through fliers, newsletters, social media sites, and automated calls.

3. Parents are given assistance in understanding the Title I requirements, standards, and assessments through annual meetings and parent-teacher conferences.4. Parents receive an explanation of the school’s performance profile, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the expected

proficiency levels in the annual progress report distributed to all stakeholders in the spring of the year, through individual reports given to parents at conference time, and through report cards.

5. Parent recommendations are encouraged and responded to in a timely manner. Verbal or written responses will be given for all recommendations. 6. Parents will be involved with the planning, review and improvement of the schoolwide programs. The vehicle used will be the Building Leadership Team

(BLT). If the schoolwide program is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, they may submit comments to the BLT.7. A jointly developed school/parent compact outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students all share responsibility for improved student

achievement. The compact also describes the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve our local high standards. It is distributed at our annual fall Title I parent night.

8. The Title I program provides opportunities for parents to become partners with the school in promoting the education of their children both at home and at school. Parents are given help monitoring their student’s education. The school also provides other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as requested by parents. Parents are encouraged to participate as volunteers in the school setting. Individual conferences will also be held upon request. A reading library, which contains reports on educational issues, books, and videos, are available for parents to check out at Johnson School.

9. The school continues to coordinate and integrate, to the extent feasible and appropriate, the parent involvement policy and other programs and activities within the district. Transitional information for students moving from fifth grade to sixth will be provided to parents at Johnson School.

10. An annual evaluation of this parent involvement policy shall be conducted to determine its effectiveness. Findings will be used to design strategies for school improvement and revision of policies. The annual spring meetings will serve as the site for the discussion of program adjustments.

Providing all Cedar Rapids Community School District’s children with equal access to quality education is of primary purpose. It is crucial that all partners (students, parents, educators, and communities) have opportunity to provide input and offer resources to meet this purpose. As these partnerships are mutually beneficial, developing cooperative efforts will ensure improve academic achievement for all students.
