Magnets

Magnets can look different from each other. Here are a few magnets that you may be use to seeing.

Magnets

Magnets are made from metals and they can attract other objects made from iron, cobalt, or nickel, which are types of metals. Without even touching something, you can pick it up, using a magnet. You can also stick a magnet to some surfaces without using anything to make it stay.

Magnetism

A new vocabulary word is magnetism. Magnetism is the property of being magnetic. A refrigerator magnet portrays magnetism because it attracts other metals to it.

Magnets

We have learned that magnets can pull on objects without touching them. We also learned that in order for a magnet to be able to pull on an object, the object must be made of certain materials. When you pull something, do you move it? So, if you pull a door open, does the door move?

Magnets

You should have answered “yes” to this question. When you pull something you move it. So, when a magnet pulls an object without touching it, do you think the object moves?

You should have answered “yes” to this question. When you pull something, you move it. So, when a magnet pulls an object without touching it, do you think the object moves?

Yes, the object does move, therefore, the object is in motion. Magnets can force an object to be in motion without touching it! Pretty cool!

The Other Side of Magnets

We have learned that magnets can pull objects toward them. However, it is also important to know that magnets can push objects away from them as well. We will learn exactly how this happens soon. For right now I want to add two vocabulary words to our list.

Vocabulary

When a magnet pulls another object toward it, it attracts, or is attracted to the object. Attract means to draw toward by force. The opposite of this is when a magnet pushes the object away. When a magnet pushes another object away from it, it repels it. Repel means to push away by force.

Next Time

Good work today learning a little more about magnets and what they can do. Next time we will learn even more about magnetism.
