Science Safety
in Miss Diaz’ classroom
Target grade: 3rd
Welcome to 3rd grade Science with Miss Diaz! I can’t wait to learn more science concepts together. First we’ll look at what we need to learn, and then we’ll learn our safety rules.
● This year, we will be using science concepts to answer these questions:
○ What is typical weather in different parts of the world and during different times of the year?
○ How can the impact of weather-related hazards be reduced?○ How do organisms vary in their traits?○ How are plants, animals, and environments of the past similar or
different from current plants, animals, and environments?○ What happens to organisms when their environment changes?○ How do equal and unequal forces on an object affect the object?○ How can magnets be used?
DCIs: What will we learn?
● Physical Science DCIs○ Forces & Motion○ Types of Interactions
● Illustration of relevant concepts:○ Magnets (Roller coasters)○ Energy (Rolling down a ramp)○ Machines (Wall & wrecking ball)
Forces &
Interactions
● Life Science DCIs○ Social Interactions & Group Behavior○ Evidence of Common Ancestry & Diversity○ Adaptation○ Biodiversity and Humans○ Ecosystem dynamics, functioning, &
resilience
● Illustration of relevant concepts:○ Life cycles○ Adaptations to survive (camouflage)○ Minerals, rocks, and soils○ How fossils are made○ Climate change
Interdependent Relationships in
Ecosystems
● Earth Science DCIs○ Weather & climate○ Natural Hazards
● Illustration of relevant concepts:○ Clouds, wind and storms○ Seasons○ Climates in different regions○ Water & tsunamis
Weather &
Climate
● Life Science DCIs○ Growth & development of organisms○ Inheritance of traits○ Variation of traits○ Natural selection
● Illustration of relevant concepts:○ Adaptations○ Habitats & Environment○ Life Cycles
Inheritance & Variation of Traits: Life Cycles & Traits
The Rules
#1: Plan Ahead● Go over all of the
steps in the experiment first.
● Ask questions before you start.
● Learn how to use the equipment.
#2: Be Neat & Organized
● Keep a clean area● Hair tied up● Legible handwriting
#3: Report Right Away!● Breakage ● Injuries
● Accidents● Spills
#4: Protect your eyes & skin● Wear safety goggles when needed● Wash off spills on your skin right away● Be careful with hot items
#5: No eating or drinking duringan experiment
#6: Clean up when you’re done
● Put all materials and supplies away● Wipe down your area● Wash your hands with soap
Safety ContractWe will be exploring the following concepts this year: ● 3-PS2 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions● 3-LS1 From molecules to Organisms: Structures and
Processes● 3-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics● 3-LS3 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits● 3-LS4 Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity● 3-ESS2 Earth's Systems● 3-ESS3 Earth and Human Activity● 3-5-ETS1 Engineering Design
Our safety rules: ● Plan Ahead● Be Neat and Organized● Report right away
○ (accidents, spills, injuries, breakage) ● Protect your eyes and skin● No eating or drinking during an experiment● Clean up when you’re done
Please sign confirming that you have read the safety contract and agree to following the safety rules.
