Significant Figures

Rules

1. All non zeros are significant. (ex. 535~3 significant figures)

2. “Sandwich Rule” ~ All zeros between non zeros are significant. (ex. 5005 ~ 4 or 50.05 ~ 4)

3. Zeros to the right of non zeros, to the right of a decimal are significant. (ex. 50.600 ~ “placeholders” ~ 5 or .4210 ~ 4)

4. Zero to the left of non zeros, to the right of the decimal are not significant. (ex. 0.000520 ~ 3)

5. Zeros after non zeros left of the decimal are not significant. (ex. 960000 ~ 2)

Significant Figures

Addition and Subtraction1. Round answer to coincide with the

number that has the least amount of places after the decimal.

Multiplication and Division1. Round answer to match number with

least amount of significant figures. (ex. 2.0 x 2.00 ~ 4.0)

Mouse Trap Car

Procedure: Each person built a mouse trap car using different materials. At the end of building we raced them.

Materials: Mouse trap wood wheels steel rod fishing pole.

Results: My first try without the fishing pole the car hardly moved. After I applied the fishing pole the car went 17 meters.

The Future of Hospitals

Experiment included researching anything that will advance in the future. The requirements were to make a power point presentation and present it to the class. Everything inside the power point needed to be factual. I researched the future of Hospitals.

Independent Project II

Color Vs. Word Experiment

Sherry and I were partners, we tested color of the word vs. the word color, we tested students independently and timed them saying first the words and then the color of the words.

Bridge Building I

We were put into groups to make a bridge of our own design out of balsa wood and super glue, with a weight limit. After everyone was done we tested them until they snapped in half.

Bridge Building II

The second bridge building was the same as one but we looked for a new design that would be better than the last one.

Hot Air Balloon

Everyone built the same hot air balloon with the same instructions. We used tissue paper and glue sticks. The launch was unsuccessful because there were many holes in the tissue paper from the glue sticks.

Independent Project III

Sound Clarification Experiment

Tested a few students to see if blindfolded they could clarify what was making the sound.

Independent Project IV

Heart Rate Experiment

Joel and I were partners we tested how long it takes people to get back to their normal heart rate after exercise.

Independent Project V

Mr. Kravig gave each group one experiment Projectile Motion Vertical Projectile Motion and Hooke’s Law. Each group was to do the experiment then pass it off to another group until all groups had done the three experiments.

Vertical Projectile Motion

We used a projectile and a ball bearing and at certain angles launched the ball five times and recorded the results.

Hooke’s Law

Tested two different springs and different masses. Then we recorded results and founds percent error.

Projectile Motion

Every group did this project we used a metal slope and a ball bearing we recorded the displacement of the ball on the carbon paper that was on the floor.
