  • Doing the eye dissection was really interesting. It was amazing to be able to see the inside of an eye up-close, and to see all the parts of the eye working together, helping us to see. I really enjoyed when we extracted the lens from inside the eye, and put it up to a newspaper to see it magnify the letters. Declan Morrison 9MA Mr Paul McAuley Science Teacher Static Electricity Year 7 Science students, continued their exploration of forces this week by looking at the non-contact force, static electricity. Lots of activities were completed to explore the effect of charging different materials, from bending water to water bottles chasing PVC piping and culminating in some hair-raising activities. Thank you to Mr Boylen, the Electrostatic Guru.

    Mathematics Creating a Parabolic Antenna Mathematics Specialist is an option a student can select for Year 10. It gives students an opportunity to gain some prior experience in some of the topics that can appear in the Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods ATAR Courses, and to also look at how they can put to use the Mathematics they learn in the classroom to use in real-life situations. This year, the students were required to make a parabolic antenna that would boost the signal strength of their home modems in a specific direction. They needed to use the knowledge they learnt from the unit on Matrices to produce a quadratic function that modelled the parabolic curve of their antenna, and to test the improvement the antenna had on the signal strength of their internet connection. All students made meritorious efforts regarding this, especially considering most of the work was done through the COVID-19 lockdown.

  • Internet strength gains from their antenna ranged from as low as 5% up to close to a 35% improvement. Lachlan Wild, 10DB, gains a special mention as he produced a standout effort for this task. Mr Michael Geddes Mathematics Teacher

    Green-batch Bins

    We are very excited to announce that the Green-batch bins have arrived. The Green-batch bins are part of our Catholic EarthCare project to increase our care for earth practises at the school. The bins will be slowly implemented at the College, starting in the Year 7 area, Canteen and Staffroom, building up over the next few years to be available school-wide. The prefects went around to all Year 7s this week informing them of this exciting development and educating them on what they can put in the Green-batch Bins.

    What can you put in a Green-batch bin?

    • Type 1 Plastics (anything with a number 1 label) e.g. Water/Soft drink bottles, Fruit Juice bottles, sauce bottles.

    • Type 2 Plastics (anything with a number 2 label) e.g. milk bottles, lids, cleaning agent bottles, shampoo/soap bottles.

    Sport Clubs Our clubs continue to provide opportunities for students to be active in a fun and supportive environment during this break from the usual school sport program. It is not too late to become involved in any of the following clubs which are conducted after school until 4:15pm:

    Inter-House Cross Country – Monday 29th June Information for Parents and Students When will the event be held? On Monday 29th June during Periods 3 and 4 beginning at 11:00am. A schedule of events will be released after nominations have closed. How far is the course? This year our course distance has increased to 3000m for girls and 4000m for boys. This has been changed to ensure that it replicates ACC distances. After this year’s ACC Cross Country Carnival was cancelled, the ACC offered schools the opportunity to have competitor results made eligible for inclusion in a “Virtual Carnival”. Providing the course meets certain guidelines, including distance, times will be entered into the ACC Virtual Carnival, and an ACC All Stars team selected. How do I get involved? This event will be by nomination only. Nominations close on Monday 22nd June and late entries will not be accepted. Nomination forms are available from outside the PE office and should be left in the

  • box provided once completed. A confirmation message will be sent to these students shortly after nominations close. Do I need to be a good runner? Competitors should be able to complete the distance without needing to walk, and simply willing to do their best. Will Age and House Champions be awarded this year? Champion and Runner Up medallions will be awarded, in conjunction with the Champion House. What will the format of the event be? After nominations close, races involving around 20 competitors will be created and the schedule for the day will be released. Age groups may be combined to create race fields, but results will still be by separate age groups. A “pro race” concept will be introduced this year for both genders, where the best performed individuals race together, regardless of age. Students will remain on the oval for the duration of the event, and will be expected to support other runners when not competing. A race briefing will be held in Week 9 on Tuesday morning during Care for the competitors. What are the uniform requirements? Competitors will wear their House shirt, with College shorts and white socks. Runners suitable for cross country should be worn. If it’s a cold day the College tracksuit should be worn to stay warm before and after running. The course will take in the footpaths around the College and this should be taken into consideration when deciding on footwear. A timing chip will be provided to wear on shoelaces. Water will be available, but competitors should bring their own water bottle. How can I prepare for the event? The Run Club trains on Monday afternoons, and Tuesday and Thursday mornings and would be a good option for those yet to join. Please contact Mr Dyer if you are interested.     NAIDOC Week Coming up - 29th June to 3rd July The NAIDOC 2020 theme Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

    The week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.

  • Keep Safe Schools Curriculum This term following exams and assessment weeks students in Years 7-10 will be covering Keep Safe Schools Curriculum within Religious Education classes. The Department for Education Child protection in schools, early childhood education and care services policy (2015) states that ‘all children and young people in DECD preschools and schools will access the approved child protection curriculum’. The KS:CPC teaches children and young people to recognise abuse, tell a trusted adult, understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching and ways of keeping themselves safe. The curriculum is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities:

    • Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe

    • Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to the people we trust.

    The two themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the learners.

    1. The right to be safe. 2. Relationships. 3. Recognising and reporting abuse. 4. Protective strategies.

    Year 10 Risk taking and emergencies: reviewing warning signs, assessing risk, positive psychology, psychological pressure and manipulation, persuasive debate.

  • First reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16 Psalm: Psalm 147 Second reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’

    Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said. Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise that person up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live forever. The first reading reminds us that God has always taken care of his people with the example that God fed his people with manna and water in Egypt in their years of exile and he never abandoned them. The Second reading from St Pauls letter to the Corinthians reminds us that the bread spoken of is one loaf of bread shared with each one of us, and that we collectively are one body, one community that all share the one bread from God. Finally, the Gospel explains to us that although now Jesus is not with us in physical form but spiritually He is through the Eucharist. The Eucharist is our spiritual food that nourishes us. It’s not the same as the physical food that was provided to the Jews in the first reading this food brings us closer to Jesus and in union to all others that share in the one bread. Let us remember this week that we become what we eat, may we think about what we feed our souls, our spirituality and look to Jesus for nourishment.
