An invention is something useful and new that someone, known as an inventor, creates or generates the idea for. There have been many different inventors though out history and anyone with a creative idea can become one, even you! Some of the most famous inventors of all time are names you may have heard in the past. They include Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, Eli Whitney, Wilbur Wright, and those are just to name a few!

Do you know of any inventors? What did they invent? Can you indentify one invention in this room?Have you ever invented anything?Did you know that some inventions can lead
to other inventions? What is an example of one invention that
sparked the idea for another invention? One example might be the telephone. After the
invention of the telephone came the invention of caller ID.
Gathering Background Knowledge

You are going to become and inventor today! You will be given a card with a make-believe
invention. The card will give a description of what the invention does.
You will be creating your own invention based on the card you were given.
The invention on your card creates the need for something else. Read the card you are given and say to yourself, “What could I invent that could make this invention even better? What is something that would go hand in hand with this invention? What is something that I could invent that would not have been possible without this invention on my card?”

You may use your science journal to write down or draw ideas for your invention.
When you are ready, you may use the craft supplies included in this box to create your invention.

In this box, you probably noticed a science journal. Now you will answer questions in this journal about your invention.Question 1: What is the name of your
invention and what does it do?Question 2: How does it relate to, or help, the
first invention you were given on your card? How do they go together?
Question 3: Without the invention on your card, would there be a need for the invention that you created?

Hopefully you have discovered that inventions can lead to other inventions.
It is a lot like brainstorming. Sometimes one idea leads to another.
It has an ever growing web effect:
