    2010 American SchoolScience Fair

    This years science fair is sure to be a success with 1st 5th grade all being able to participate. Thesame requirements will be expected for school wide but the depth will change depending on gradelevel. Students are learning about the scientific method in class and during a special workshop. Thefollowing is some important information concerning your child and the science fair.

    Mark your Calendars for these Important Dates: Participants in the Science Fair must inform their teacher by Friday, March 26th Depending on grade level and section students will be working on projects in class or at home;

    please check with your individual classroom teacher. Science Fair projects are due to classroom teacherMonday, May 3rd Teachers turn in projects to official judges Tuesday, May 4th (incomplete projects or adult

    created** projects will not be able to participate) Science Fair Judging will take place May 5th 6th Science Fair May 7th (open to students and parents), times TBA

    Science Fair ProjectRequirements

    Projects CANNOT involve unnecessarypain or discomfort to any vertebrateanimals (e.g. mammals, birds, fish).

    These projects are prohibited!ALL projects must solve a scientificproblem via the scientific method, as

    described in the student packet and in-classworkshops. Demonstrations,

    collections, and models are NOTscience fair projects.

    In general, the display of anything thatcould be hazardous to the public is

    prohibited in your childs Science Fairdisplay. Prohibited items are listed tothe right. If a project uses prohibiteddisplay materials in its execution, thestudent should consider photographs,

    drawings, or other methods fordescribing the project in the display.

    Prohibited items for displayinclude:

    WATER (or ANY LIQUID, even in a sealedcontainer) Living creatures, including plants andmicrobes Dried plant material Taxidermy specimens or parts Preserved vertebrate or invertebrate animals Soil or waste samples

    Human or animal food Sharp items Flames or highly flammable materials Tanks with any substances under pressure Batteries with open-top cells Organisms, fungi, cultured growths, spoiledfood, or mold Containers filled with water or any other liquid Poisons, drugs, or controlled substances Dry ice or other sublimating solids Moving parts with unprotected belts and/or

    pulleys Class III and IV lasers Human or animal parts (exceptions: hair,teeth, nails, bones, sections, and wet-mounttissue slides)

    **Remember that this project is a reflection of the work the student has done. This should not be aproject that was created by a parent, tutor, older sibling or any other adult but the studentsthemselves. Displays should represent the knowledge of the student and his or her understanding.Projects that do not follow this guideline will be disqualified from participating in the Science Fair!
