EISTEDDFOD SUCCESS!

Earlier this month, singers and instrumentalists from all three campuses represented Great Lakes College at the

Taree and District Eisteddfod, with a number of placings and commendations awarded.

Fifty-five students from years 7 to 12 had the opportunity to perform on stage at the Manning Entertainment

Centre, competing against students from 6 different public and private schools as far afield as Gloucester. Each of

the ensembles prepared two contrasting songs, performing before adjudicator Jason Noble, a distinguished

Australian clarinetist. Our ensembles in each of the Rock/Modern/Folk Band sections were mainly comprised of

students who have studied elective Music. The College Band is made up of both elective and non-elective students

in all years, and from all campuses.

Our success included 1st prize to the College Band under the direction of Mrs Richardson, and the combined Year

9/10 Elective Music ensemble from Tuncurry Campus who were selected and rehearsed by Mr Ruprecht. 2nd prize

in the Year 11/12 section went to a very tight Year 12 ensemble, a group who rehearsed together most lunch times

in preparation for their performance. Highly Commended ribbons were awarded to one of Mr Ravoul’s Year 9

ensembles (a group that also performed an original composition), and a group from Mr Jensen’s Year 11 class.

Congratulations must also go to all students for their outstanding representation of the College, and to the many

musicians who entered solo, duet and trio performances, for their hours of practice and commitment. We look

forward to your involvement in upcoming performance opportunities, such as Shine On and MADD later this year!

COLLEGE SPORT STATE CANOEING CHAMPIONSHIPS

After many years of racing at Nymboida the

2018 State Canoeing Championship moved to a

new venue. Between 26th and 29th of May

paddlers from 23 NSW schools faced new

courses and different conditions for this years

competition. While the Flatwater events still

took place at Grafton on the Clarence River,

Slalom, Whitewater and Wildwater events were

held at Mann River Recreation Reserve near

Jackadgery.

The Great Lakes College coaching team of Phil

Koch and Suzanne Fiebig brought nine paddlers along to represent the Great Lakes College for the Combined High

Schools and All Schools titles.

On the first day Breanna Truett’s and Jock Sweeney’s hard training on Wallis Lake paid off as both took gold medals

in the 5000m Women’s and Men’s K1 long distance race. The days medal haul included nine golds and other

medals in all 500m Flatwater Sprint events.

In the Slalom individual events on the second day, Camden Ceccato took silver in both U14 Men’s C1 and K1 events,

and Open Men’s division and Women’s C1 and K1 were dominated by Alexander Fiebig, Breanna Truett and

Makayla Randall. Max Hamilton and Rudy Ferrer secured the gold in the U16 Men’s C2 500m Whitewater Sprints.

Team Slalom events on the third day gave the paddlers the opportunity to showcase not only their expertise but

their outstanding team spirit and enthusiasm. The three K1 teams and two C1 teams gave it their all and were

rewarded with silver medals. The highlight was the Open Mixed C2 race which was an exciting event displaying the

coordinated skills of six team mates paddling through 18 consecutive gates over the 250m long course and having

to finish within 15 seconds between first and last boats. The Great Lakes C2

paddlers, consisting of Alexander and Camden, Makayla and Breanna and

Jock and Rudy, brought home team gold.

The Down River long course event was held on the final day. Our team

showed their strength and stamina in their Down River Racing Boats

(DRRs), kayaks and canoes and won the full complement of medals.

In their first year of competition our two primary school participants,

Sophia Sweeney and Dylan Ceccato, showed their excellent skills, bravery

and determination. Sophia performed admirably against a large cohort of

North Coast girls and has positioned herself well for a great start at high

school next year. Dylan finished with the fastest time in the Under 14s in

his Downriver race and performed sensationally in his K1 Sprint, finishing

second in the 14s age class.

Breanna Truett, Captain of the Canoe team and one of the three Year 12

students at Great Lakes College competing in their last State Championship

this year, was also awarded the 2018 CHS Girl Champion, for winning the

most points for individual events against all other State High School girls

over the four days.

As a result of these individual and team event achievements the Great Lakes College Canoeists once again defended

their Combined High School State title as well as the All Schools State title and returned home with both shields to

decorate the College foyer.

All competitors are now taking a well deserved break over winter. The season will resume at the end of Term 3, in

September. If you are interested in joining the Canoeing and Kayaking Club please contact Phil Koch at Great Lakes

College, Forster Campus (Ph. 6554 6062). The training venue is the Forster Marina on Wednesday and Thursday

HUNTER REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY REPORT GLC TUNCURRY

Having been successful in their efforts at Zone Cross Country at Wingham, 16 select athletes from Great Lakes College Tuncurry Campus took on the next level of competition in representing Manning Zone at Cessnock Racecourse on a day that began with miserably wet and cold conditions that thankfully improved as we closed in on the venue.

Sunny and dry conditions prevailed for the day with a strong southerly wind keeping the temperature down and the dust flying up - making conditions fairly challenging for competitors and spectators alike, though a dry, firm track and the southerly 'gale' tailwind to the finish promised some quick times.

All competitors acquitted themselves extremely well, with their competitive spirit and general conduct during the day drawing praise from regional managers and administrators for their overall attitude and the pride they displayed in representing the Manning Region alongside many of their previous rivals.

Special mention goes to Tyler Pascoe and his father Ben; whose best efforts to make the morning registration cut off time were thwarted by some persisting mechanical issues that saw them unfortunately have to return home.

Our younger competitors took to the track first with Drew Townsend, Connor Anderson and Kaiden Franks contesting the 3 kilometre 12 Years Boys event followed immediately by Skyla Brown in the 12 Years Girls 3 kilometre event.

The boys demonstrated good tactics, running together for the early section of the race and then launching into the back half as confidently and individually as possible. The girls were equally as focused from start to finish in their tactical and individual assault on their event, while inspiring more vocal 'support' than the boys.

Next our 14 year Girls competitors Keseah Bell and Zoe Manning contested their 4 kilometre event in the same vein as their younger peers.

Our 16 Years Boys competitor, Joel Elliot was next to tackle his event, which had grown to a seemingly "huge" 6 kilometre course. No problem for Joel though, who finished with a personal best time.

The 15 years Girls event was then contested over a shorter distance of 4 kilometres by Halle Ford, Fiona Gottstein (below- making a move on the rail) , Laura Wilson and Alayna Craig (Below right - relieved after the finish).

Finally the 15 Years Boys event (also over 4 kilometres) was contested by Joseph Forrester.

Selection to compete at this years’ State Cross Country event was the ultimate goal for many competitors from this days performance, with official results and notifications still being processed at time of writing.

A huge thankyou to all parents, friends and staff (Mr Hudson and Mr Nealon) for their support on the day.

SURVIVOR COOKING TASK

Once becoming proficient at being able to start a fire using multiple implements, such as a flint and steel, the

Survivor class begin to research and investigate recipes and cooking techniques using an open fire. Students select

from multiple strategies and foods of their choice and practically apply their knowledge to cook a meal using a fire.

Students have an hour to cook their meals and this term we had some excellent final products. Foods ranged from

a wholesome camp stir fry, bacon and egg rolls, steaks, sausages, whole fish and even some American smores for

dessert. Students also had the opportunity to try some traditional Aboriginal foods such as kangaroo and fish.
