School's Out, Bikes Out In May, Transportation Solutions partnered with AAA Colorado to help 34 high school students get the skills they need to be lifelong safe cyclists--just in time for summer break! For this program, we worked with two local high schools to teach bike safety to students between the ages of 14 and 18. The instruction included training on bicycle safety, maintenance, laws, and how to be a safe driver around cyclists. At South High School we partnered with teacher Deb Swan to teach 21 girls in two physical educations classes, using the school's own fleet of bicycles. At George Washington High School we worked with teacher SyRae Weikle to train 13 girls and boys. Students at George Washington High School who had a need for a bike received a free bike from Recycle Bicycles at the completion of the course. A huge thanks goes to Bruce Lein of Recycle Bicycles for donating these bikes to the students! For more information about Recycle Bicycles, including how to donate a new or used bike, please visit their website . This fall, we are looking forward to continuing to teach bike safety to students at South High School and George Washington High School, as well as expanding the program to East High School. Trip Assistance Program Launches Residential Outreach

As part of a two-year personalized trip planning grant,Transportation Solutions is reaching out to residentsthroughout the Colorado and Alameda station areas tohelp them find safe, convenient routes using alternativeforms of transportation.

If you live near Colorado Station, look for something inthe mail soon with more details about the program. Thismailer will include a short survey and a place to indicateyour interest in certain modes to receive personalizedinformation. For example, check 'bicycling', and we'llsend you a bike map, a localized map of your area, suggested routes, safety trainingopportunities, and dates of group rides. And, we'll send you two free RTD passesjust for filling out the survey!

The mailing will be followed by intensive employer outreach and events at residentialhubs. Transportation Solutions staff are actively reaching out to registeredneighborhood organizations, business alliances, and similar groups to talk about theprogram. If you would like us to present to your group, or you just have questionsabout the program, please email Program Manager Alex Mehn [email protected].

Smart Moves Along Leetsdale-Parker ProgramReduces Trips by 230,000 This spring marked the end of a two-yearCongestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ)grant focused on those living and/or workingwithin a half mile of Leetsdale-Parker road, from1st Avenue to I-225. Through this innovativeprogram, we created the successful commutermatching program Bike Buddies, distributed RTDpasses in Glendale, and partnered with CDPHE,CDOT, and Kaiser Permanente to encouragetheir employees to take different modes oftransportation. The success of CMAQ grants is measured inreduction of vehicle miles traveled (VMT's.) Byreviewing surveys, hard counts, and employerfeedback, it was determined that this programwas responsible for over 2 million fewer miles driven over the course of two years. That's nine times the distance from here to the moon! Bike to Work Day Recap

Bright and early on the morning of June 25th,Transportation Solutions staff and volunteers went towork at breakfast stations across the Southeast metroDenver area to provide transportation information andbreakfast to event participants. For the first time thisyear, we also worked with some great partners to put ona water aid station in Creekside Park for those whocould use a boost on the ride home.

The estimated total number of riders for this year's event was close to 30,000, andabout a quarter of those were first time Bike to Work Day participants!

If you participated in the event, look for a survey from the Denver Regional Council ofGovernments to hit your email box later this summer. Be sure to fill that out so thatnext year's event will be even better.

Students Shift Gears
