Playgrounds.• Students had a choice to go home

for lunch or stay at school.

• Tetherball and Dodge ball were games most liked at school.

• The schoolyard was separated by grades, 1-3 and 4-6.

Library.• They used a big file cabinet to find a book

because they didn’t have computers.

• The library was a very small place, but that didn’t mean they have many books! They still had loads.

• There weren't any library’s in school, people had to go to town to borrow one.

Number of students in class.

• In the 50’s in Western Pennsylvania classes had about 30 students.

• Grade1-8 all in one room with one teacher. There were 28 students in the class.

• In the 70’s there were never more then 25 students in a class.

What was studied?

• In high school students were able to pick their English and Reading classes they wanted to take.

• Maths, handwriting and bible Christian class was taught daily.

• All work was done by hand because there were no computers in their days.

School Rules.• There weren’t very many rules, but if

you broke one there was a consequence.

• If you broke one you were either sent to the principal or punished.

• Teachers we allowed to hit kids knuckles with rulers if they felt the needed to.

Was there anything else that was different?

• Everyday classes would always start off with a prayer and a reading of the bible.

• Students weren't allowed inside until the hand bell rang and teachers gave them permission.

• Girls were only allowed to wear skirts, nothing else. Summer or winter.
