"Teach & Learn Spanish has so many tools and techniques to get children excited about Spanish every week. My favorite part about how it's designed is that it allows me as a teacher to tailor my lessons to each group (based on ages and interests) as well as choose what to teach based on what is relevant to each class."

Samantha B. Classroom TeacherEspecially for Children Childcare CenterEdina, MN

"My girls LOVE learning Spanish with Teach & Learn Spanish!!! We listen to the CD in the car a lot, and they are so proud of counting to 12 :)! The activities are great, and it is so nice everything can be adapted for such a wide age range! It is also nice because I can reuse the material each year and focus on different aspects as the children grow:)! Thank you!"

Chelsea A. Homeschool Parent of Children Ages 5, 4, 19 monthsWabasha, MN

"I really appreciate when Theresa trains us and models the games that get the kids moving, like the relay clothing relay in the Spanish In December lesson and the "Me gusta" and "No me gusta" relay race in the Spanish In November lesson. The games keep their interest and keep them engaged. As a non-Spanish speaker, I find that the repetition and the chanting is really beneficial to me and to my students."

When the tide is out a sandy beach is the perfect canvas for an exciting game of “Pictionary”! Give this classic game a summer-time twist with words like sand, fish, seashell, etc.

From a dollar store or an arts and crafts store, buy a bag of sand and a tin container. Pour the sand into the container to simulate a beach. Model “Beach Pictionary” by pulling one of the beach vocabulary pictures out of the beach bag. Don’t show it to anyone. Draw a picture of it in the sand with your finger. The students must try to guess what you draw. Once the correctguess has been made, pretend that the waves, “las olas” come to clear the picture from the beach by moving the sand around with your hand. Give the next student a turn.

Play with the swimming and beach vocabulary from Activities 4 and 6. If the children are not ready to guess the words inSpanish, let them guessin English and thenrepeat the words together in Spanish with you!

Activity 8:Swimming PhrasesFrases de Natación

It’s time to learn common swimming phrases in Spanish. Spanish in August CD Tracks 5 and 6 chant the phrases in English one time, followed by twice in Spanish. The first time you listen, hold up the ac-tual items or the picture of the items as they are named. The second time you listen, try to act out the phrases together. You may have to pause the CD to do this as it goes fast. For example, as the CD lists the things you will bring to the beach, let kids put those items in the beach bag. When the CD says, “let’s sit on the beach towel,” let sever-al kids sit on the beach towel in your classroom. All try to act out the phrases like “swim,” “kick your feet,” “I’ll catch you,” etc. Have fun with it!

(There are quite a few phrases so you may want to choose a few phrases to learn and teach each day.)

1. Actual items or pictures of a swimming pool, a beach, swimsuits, flip flops, sunglasses, sunscreen, goggles, a slide, a sprinkler, seashells, fish. (pp 59-66)2. A beach bag or colorful bag.3. A beach towel(s) or the picture of the beach towel from page 53.4. A container of sand or the picture of sand on page 62.

* The more “real” items you can use to teach the phrases on

pages 26-27, the better.

Activity 9: Game: The Parachute Juego: El Paracaídas

Kids love parachute games so what are you waiting for? Grab a large beach towel and a beach ball. Lay the towel on the floor and have the kids sit down in a circle around it. Model that they should hold on to the sides and ends of the towel with both hands. Practice raising and lowering the towel together. If you have a large class you can divide the class into two or more groups and give each group a beach towel.

Next, tell them you are going to put the beach ball on the towel. They should raise and lower the towel to see how many times the ball can bounce on the towel up to 30 without falling off. Be sure to count out loud in Spanish. If you need to brush up on numbers, see the tables on the next three pages and listen to Spanish in August CD Tracks 7, 8 and 9. You can also refer to the number cards on pages 73-75 as you count. For older kids, count by 2’s or count backwards starting at 30, 20, or 10.

(Hweh-goh: El Pah-dah-kah-ee-dahs)

Variation: Tape a picture of one of the beach

items to the ball. Each time you toss the ball up repeat the name of

the item that is taped to the ball Eg. “la toalla”

“las chanclas” etc.”

Using two small beach balls, have two kids at a time race each other across the shallow end of the pool, or across the class-room or living room floor. They must race each other by using their faces to push their ball along in front of them to the oth-er side of the pool or room. No hands allowed! This makes a perfect swimming or crawling relay for young kids.

If you are playing indoors, tape a variety of the swimming visuals on the opposite wall. Tell the kiddos that when they reach the wall they have to find the picture thatyou call out in Spanish “gafas de sol” (sunglasses), for example. They must quickly put the pictureiinto the beach bag and sit down. The firstchild to sit down, wins.

If you want to take away the competitiveedge, tape two copies of each visualto the wall. For older kids you can use the flashcardsin addition to, or instead of the visuals.

Before carrying out this activity, you will need apool noodle or a jump rope. Tape pictures of the swimming and beach vocabulary to the wall so the kids can touch them as you call them out.

The limbo dance originated in Trinidad in the 1800s. Bring it to the 21st century with a fun beach version! With two people holding the ends of a pool noodle or jump rope, have each child take a turn trying to go under the “bar” with their backs facing the sand. Tell them that after they successfully pass under the bar, they must touch and say the name of the item you call out. If they do, they earn a point for their team. Play Spanish in August CD Track 10 and look at the table on the next page which will prepare you to play in Spanish.

After each child has succeeded at a certain height of the bar, lower it again and again. To spice up the activity, play a selection of fun beach tunes in the background.

Activity 13: Game: Sand Darts

Juego: Dardos de la Arena

Sand Darts is one game that’s always a bullseye at the beach! You can also play in the classroom or at home. It’s easy to set up. Just sketch a dart board in the pan of sand you used earlier in this lesson. (Determine how many points each ring of the dart-board is worth before you begin to play.) Use shells or stones for darts. You can find them in your yard or purchase them at a sol-lar store or at an arts and crafts store.

Have students take turns standing behind a line that youput on the floor with masking tape and tossing a shell or a stone onto the sand. Their goal is for their shell or stone to land in the middle or as close to the middle of the dart board as possible. Write down the points for each child. Play Spanish in August CD Track 11 to learn and practice the phrasesin the table on the next page so that you can play this gamein Spanish.

About the Author

Theresa O. Gunderson, Co-Founder of O'Neill Language Academy (OLA), established in 1991, has been creating second language curriculum in nine languages and teaching Spanish and English to all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens for 26 years. Theresa and her husband are raising their two children in a bilingual home. Theresa speaks to them in Spanish, and her husband in English. When Theresa lived in France and Spain and traveled Europe, she witnessed how naturally children can grow up knowing two, and even three languages! Likewise, when teaching at a Spanish immersion school, she experienced how children easily learn a second language when surrounded by it, and when provided with lots of encouragement, modeling and praise. Because of her desire to help others achieve a bilingual family and classroom no matter their level of Spanish, the Teach & Learn Spanish™ curriculum was born! The project took two years to complete.

Today, homeschooling families, childcare centers and elementary schools are using Teach & Learn Spanish!™ In addition, Theresa and her husband have launched OLA's Entrepreneur Program in which they teach others to start their own business using the Teach & Learn Spanish™ curriculum. Theresa also conducts training sessions for teachers mentoring them as they implement the Teach & Learn Spanish™ curriculum.

Theresa’s interest in foreign languages began during her teenage years while attending De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her junior year, she traveled to Spain and lived with a host family. She and her host family remain close friends today, 30+ years later! In college Theresa studied French in Cannes, France, and Spanish in Toledo, Spain, and at the University of Madrid. She also worked in Madrid as an English teacher. Upon returning to the United States, Theresa taught at the Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion Program, one of the first Spanish immersion schools in Minnesota.

Theresa’s education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish, an Elementary Education Degree, and a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Teaching Second Languages and Cultures Education. In her free time Theresa loves to spend time with her husband and children and their dog “ Oso” which means “Bear” in Spanish. She also enjoys cooking, reading exercising, traveling and volunteering. In addition to developing the Teach & Learn Spanish™ series, Theresa continues to teach and run the daily operations at O'Neill Language Academy.

Theresa's hope is that you enjoy every moment of learning and teaching Spanish to the children in your life while gradually creating a bilingual classroom or home experience for them!
