As a parent myself, one aspect I believe worth reflecting on is how we have helped to develop our child’s growth mindset. A person with a growth mindset is someone who believes that skills and intelligence can be grown and developed. He/she embraces challenges and sees them as opportunities to grow. He/she understands that effort is essential on the path towards mastery. He/she is receptive to feedback and sees mistakes as learning opportunities. The success of others inspires him/her and spurs him/her to work hard. A person with a growth mindset is set for life. He/she is a lifelong learner. As parents, we can contribute to our child’s growth mindset development by doing the following: Compliment effort, process and choices. Don’t praise ability or intelligence because doing that promotes a fixed mindset. Tie good outcomes to effort. Be happy when your child succeeds but attribute it to the effort he/ she has put in. Respond positively to failure. Your child needs to know that failure is not a bad thing and can be seen as a tool for learning. Help your child set goals and strategise. Do not just tell him/her to “try hard” because blind repetition does not work all the time. Teach growth mindset in all areas of life. There is no area where one cannot improve with hard work. Role model growth mindset. Talk to your child about your own growth mindset efforts. Practise it yourself and share your results with your child. With Teachers’ Day just round the corner, we have reminded your child/ward that a simple handmade card/ craft with words of gratitude will be enough to show their appreciation to teachers. Please help us to reinforce the message to your child/ward that the best way to thank their teachers is really through their enthusiasm and effort in learning, the good character they display and the collaborative spirit they build with their classmates every single day! Have a good and restful break! Yours faithfully Mr Chua Choon Hock Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians

TERM 4 COMMUNIQUÉ

The end of each term is a time for reflection; to think through what we have done so that we can

improve and do better. As a parent myself, one aspect I believe worth reflecting on is how we have

helped to develop our child’s growth mindset. A person with a growth mindset is someone who

believes that skills and intelligence can be grown and developed. He/she embraces challenges and

sees them as opportunities to grow. He/she understands that effort is essential on the path towards

mastery. He/she is receptive to feedback and sees mistakes as learning opportunities. The success

of others inspires him/her and spurs him/her to work hard. A person with a growth mindset is set

for life. He/she is a lifelong learner.

As parents, we can contribute to our child’s growth mindset development by doing the following:

Compliment effort, process and choices.

Yours faithfully

Mr Chua Choon Hock

I. School-Wide Events and Programmes

a) Cyber Wellness Week Critical thinking is one of the very important skills we need to equip our children with, both in the cyber world

as well as in the real world. With the prevalence of fake news and inappropriate content online in this era of

information explosion, we want our students to be able to analyse them, make the right decisions and take

prompt actions to protect themselves and the peers around them.

In Term 4, 23 – 27 Sep, we will partner DQ World, a social enterprise that champions cyber wellness, and Singtel

to bring to our students engaging assembly programmes, fun and informative recess activities and innovative

online educational materials to educate and equip our students with critical thinking skills to thrive in the cyber

world.

Please refer to Annex A for some tips on how you could to talk to your child/ward and help them to handle

inappropriate content online.

b) Books 2 Go! In partnership with the National Library Board (NLB), students will get to borrow books from a pre-selected collection on 6 and 7 Nov 2019 (Wednesday and Thursday). Do sign up as a member if your child/ward has not done so. For those who are already members, please assist with the following:

Ensure your child/ward brings his/her school ez-link card/library card

Pay the fines (if any) in your child’s/ward’s library account

Return all books in your child’s/ward’s account before the mass borrowing activity

If your child/ward has lost his/her school ez-link card, please report the loss at any public library and have a new library card made. (Note: A fee of $1.00 applies for a new library card.)

Kindly ensure that the NLB books borrowed in the school on 6 and 7 Nov are returned to any public library by the due date that is indicated on the loan receipt and not at the school library. In addition, you are encouraged to sign up for myLibrary to enjoy a suite of enhanced e-services. With the myLibrary ID, you will be able to view your child’s/ward’s borrowing record as well as activating the free reminder service. The reminder service will prompt you to return the books which your child/ward has borrowed, on time. To register, visit https://account.nlb.gov.sg. For further assistance, please contact NLB at [email protected].

II. Level Event and Programmes

Apart from instilling values and enhancing the students’ social-emotional competencies through these programmes, we also hope that the students will be able to explore the talents and interests beyond their academic studies.
