THE HENRY BEAUFORT SCHOOLThe Henry Beaufort School is a secondary school in Winchester, in the county of Hampshire in England. The school was built in 1971 as the first purpose-built, co-educational, comprehensive school in Winchester, and now serves around 1000 students, all 11-16.

The school provides a tremendous environment for our students to learn and we are proud to be a comprehensive school where there are ‘high standards’ [Ofsted May 2017] for all of our students.

WELCOMEThank you for your interest in our school.

I am proud and privileged to be the Headteacher of The Henry Beaufort School.

The young people of our school both humble and inspire me every day of my working life. Our school is a wonderful place for children to learn, where ‘Teachers and leaders at all levels are enthusiastic and ambitious.’ [Ofsted May 2017].

We share an inclusive ethos which focuses on challenge, enjoyment and success for all.

OUR VISIONAt The Henry Beaufort School, there are no limitations to success. We are ambitious for all of our students. Our school is proud of its tradition as an inclusive comprehensive school where students are happy.

We celebrate the success of our students at every opportunity. We place great value on our cultural enrichment programme and take delight in the buzz and energy around the school site well beyond the official ending of the school day.

We value the fundamental role that we play in the academic and moral education of young people. We understand the challenges that accompany our role as educationalists and we continue to work to find ways to refine and improve our practice. This is underpinned by our aim to be outstanding in everything we do.

Our values are centred on Pride, Happiness and Ambition.

HOW OUR LEARNING ETHOS POSITIVELY IMPACTS ON STUDENT PERFORMANCEThe Henry Beaufort School is committed to high academic standards and the rapid rate of progress for all of our students. Examination success is crucial to an individual’s chances in their later life. It is the culmination of 11 years of education, and therefore during their five years at The Henry Beaufort School, we ensure progress and attainment is always at the forefront of our thinking.

Where students are not making expected progress, appropriate interventions are put in place. Formal monitoring takes place every term to ensure that progress is being made. Parents receive a report three times per year and have an annual parents meeting to discuss their child’s progress. Students are encouraged to attend these meetings with their parents.

Heads of Year and tutors have an overview of the students for whom they are responsible. As a school, we work closely with parents in order to support the progress of our students.

Exemplary systems for tracking pupils attainment and progress ““

The school is innovative in its approach to learning. We have a unique learning ethos at The Henry Beaufort School, which is called (hb)2: Henry Beaufort – Habit Building. We believe that good learning is all about good habits. This ethos is a key part of the way in which students are encouraged to learn at The Henry Beaufort School, and the results are clear.

In order for our students to become successful they need to be independent learners who exhibit resilience, resourcefulness and the ability to reflect; (hb)2 is the key to this process.

OFSTED

Leaders at all levels have an excellent understanding of the school’ and the ‘leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school… and ensured that it continues to improve.

Teachers and pupils have highly effective relationships in all year groups. Through this, behaviour is good and pupils want to learn. Pupils take pride in their work, are self-assured and confident in their abilities and so make good progress overall.

Ofsted described our students as a ‘credit to the school’.““

High standards are expected of pupils both in their academic achievement and their behaviour’s.

TRANSITION.In the summer term of Year 6 all new students are invited to two intake days to meet their tutor and prepare for the move to secondary school. An exchange of detailed information from the Primary School and parents gives each student the best possible start at the school. Parents are invited to a meeting at The Henry Beaufort School where they are introduced to procedures, practicalities and the key people who will be working with their child. This programme of welcome is continued in the autumn when new students start at The Henry Beaufort School with team building tutor group trips and a meet the tutor evening.

The transition to secondary school is an extremely important time for students, both in terms of academic achievement as well as building the “whole” person.

Key foci for Year 7 include:

• Preparation for change• Confidence building• Complementing learning, social and

intellectual development• New working experiences and

environments• Working as a team• Working with all year groups

Pupils’ comments are very positive about the school. They are happy and consider there to be a strong sense of mutual respect between themselves and staff. Ofsted 2017

INDIVIDUAL NEEDSOne of the many strengths of the school is its excellent pastoral care system. We believe that students need to learn to behave as mature and responsible adults and that they will learn best when all members of the school community treat each other with respect.

We have high expectations of our students. We have a clear code of conduct based on the key ideas of respect for others, respect for self, courtesy, co-operation and consideration. All students at The Henry Beaufort School have a right to feel safe and make progress, without the behaviour of other students becoming a barrier to their learning.

The school has a rewards system which recognises the good behaviour of the students in the school. This positive behaviour strategy rewards students for their effort, progress and good conduct. The school has a clear system of consequences for unacceptable behaviour.

Vertical tutoring has been in existence for a number of years and is designed to provide opportunities for students of all ages to mix and work together. Every year group has a Head of Year, and the daily care of each child is the responsibility of the tutor who is able to support and care for students on a day to day basis.

[Students] describe how the vertical tutoring helps establish strong relationships between students of different ages. They have a strong belief in the system, one of the strongest that the team have identified in working across a number of Hampshire schools

RESOURCE BASEThe Henry Beaufort School has a Resource Base, providing specialist support for students with hearing impairments.

The Base has dedicated facilities including tutorial and audiology rooms and expertise from experienced, trained staff. We work alongside outside agencies, such as Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists, to enable our students to realise their full potential.

Students attend mainstream lessons with their peers and if required, receive additional teaching support within the Base. Technology in terms of personalised radio aids, is used to provide maximum access to the curriculum.

Mainstream teaching staff are informed of each HI student’s needs and are appropriately trained to ensure that lessons are delivered effectively for all students.

To support personal, social and emotional wellbeing there are opportunities for our students to take part in a range of events organised by local and national deaf organisations, which have included West End theatre shows and sailing trips.

We are dedicated to developing students’ self-esteem, to have them take ownership of their own learning and be valued and inclusive members of the school community.

CURRICULUMThe Henry Beaufort School provides opportunities for every student to follow a broad and balanced curriculum.

We know that students learn in different ways and have different rates of progress. We group students according to the needs of the individual; this includes setting and mixed ability teaching, depending on the subject. In Year 7 and Year 8 students follow a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities (History, Geography and RE), French, German or Spanish, Technology, Computing, Physical Education and Expressive Arts (Art, Music and Drama).

From Year 9 onwards, students continue to study English Language and English Literature, Mathematics, Science and Core PE. In addition to these subjects, all students begin the study of their GCSE option choices. Options focus on traditional GCSE subjects as well as innovative courses such as GCSE Engineering and GCSE Photography.

We pride ourselves on our ability to support students including those who are Gifted and Talented. For these students, we provide extension programmes and enrichment activities within specific subjects.

The school understands that all students have different needs and as a result has a diverse curriculum to accommodate them. The school is committed to a cultural enrichment programme that complements the broad and balanced five year curriculum plan.

The SEND Department provides support for students across the four broad areas of need (Cognition & Learning, Social, Emotional & Mental Health, Communication & Interaction and Sensory & Physical Disability) as recognised in the SEND Code of Practice 2015. The support we offer is based on need, with priority given to students with Education, Health and Care Plans.

EXTRA-CURRICULARExtra-curricular opportunities, including Enrichment Week, help extend the learning diet which our students receive. This broadens minds and develops personal and social skills.

Extra-curricular sports provision takes place from Monday to Thursday with a wide range of individual and team games. We provide both friendly and competitive opportunities that are available to all. Weekend events are also strongly supported. Our facilities include field space for major team games, a gym, hard courts and a Sports Hall. We also have a floodlit synthetic turf All Weather Pitch, which is used both by the school and the local community. We are very proud of our sporting achievements, which we share with our parents via our PE department Twitter feed.

Concerts, drama productions and art exhibitions are all an integral part of the annual cycle of extra-curricular opportunities, within the Expressive Arts. Bi-annual whole school productions take place with teams from all areas of the school coming together to put on a production. This is complemented throughout the year with music and drama events that involve students from all year groups.

Throughout the year there are opportunities for students to work with professional musicians, dramatists and artists, to further develop their understanding and progress in these areas. The school holds the Gold Arts Mark Award.

We also run regular residential trips to places such as New York, Italy, Finland and the Battlefields of World War One.

We run a late bus service for students who want to participate in extra curricular activities after school.

Other extra-curricular activities in a typical term include the Debate Club, Mandarin Club, Literacy Book Club, Cooking Club and STEM Club, to name just a few. In Years 10 and 11, subject workshops are provided by each team area within school.

MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCEThe Henry Beaufort School has developed close links with European schools via the Erasmus project. This has involved students visiting European schools in order to gain an understanding of the linguistic and cultural similarities and differences that we have. The European partnership comes with a grant which provides funds offering students the opportunity to travel to these countries. The project has enabled many of our students to gain an in-depth understanding of life in different countries. The school has previously had links with students in Vietnam, South Africa and Palestine. There are plans to develop a further link with a school in Japan.

The school has a commitment to involving students in working with both local and international charity organisations, with students taking a major lead in decision making and organisation.

POST-16 OPPORTUNITIESOver ninety eight percent of The Henry Beaufort School students go onto post-16 education at Peter Symonds College in Winchester or other local colleges in Sparsholt, Eastleigh and Basingstoke.

Thinking about the future is not an issue to leave to the final year of school. At The Henry Beaufort School we actively encourage our students to see their five years at the school as preparation for life beyond the school gates.

We provide opportunities for Careers information, advice and guidance from Year 7 upwards. Work experience opportunities are provided in Year 10 and Information Evenings and presentations by our local colleges and training providers occur in Year 11. We have a programme of visits to Universities including an annual visit to St Edmunds Hall, our partnership college at Oxford University.

We have a dedicated Careers Service providing guidance on careers and personal development within the school.
