Dear pupils,Dear teachers,Thanks a lot for participating in this years’ School Project with the theme “Colors of the World”.

The aim of this project is on one hand to create a learning environment for pupils and teachers and on the other hand for the interns participating in the project. Through this school project cultural awareness and in general a better understanding of cultural differences should be achieved. Barriers which were created because of fear and ignorance should be destroyed by going through this awareness building process.

This project is a national project and takes place simultaneously in Vienna, Linz and Salzburg. In order to make this experience as intercultural as possible we have invited 10 people from 10 different countries to be your facilitators during the workshops. 4 facilitators will be responsible for the Workshops in Vienna and it can happen that you will also meet interns from Salzburg and Linz.

In this booklet you will find information about our lovely interns and their countries.

The School Project Team Vienna hopes you will enjoy these workshops and is happy to have you as one of our participants.

An estimated 5.4 million people have died. In Kahuzi Biega National Park the gorilla populati-on has been cut nearly in half, from 258 to 130 as the ground is cleared to make mining easier. Not only has this reduced the available food for the Gorillas, the poverty caused by the dis-placement of the local populations by the mi-ners has lead to Gorillas being killed and their meat being sold as „bush meat“ to the miners and rebel armies that control the area.

What can we do to stop this? A good idea would be to buy only mobiles that do not have coltan from DR Congo on them. But this is very hard to do because there is not a current certification to make sure that all components come from legitimate sources. However, there is an increasing awareness about the situation, and society can put more pressure on compa-nies by supporting movements such as blood in your mobile.org. The other key point is re-cycling. By recycling your cell phone, you are protecting a gorilla mountain. So get all your old mobiles at home and bring them to one the recycling centers in Vienna, Finally try not to change every two months your cell phone, a gorilla would be really thank full if you do so.

Want to know more???A shocking documentary that explains in a deeper way the situation in DR Congo

Your ecological impactSometimes we tend to believe that ecological problems only refer to something that is hap-pening far away from us and we cannot do any-thing respect them, especially in a country like Austria, where the environment is well protec-ted.

Gorillas & your mobileDid you know that your cell phone is closely re-lated to the extinction of the Gorilla Mountain in Africa? How is that?

There is a main component on everybody’s cell phone: Coltan. It is also a component in diffe-rent electronics products such as DVD players, video game systems and computers. It is esti-mated that 64% to 80% of the Coltan reserves are located in DR Congo. Since 1998 there has been a civil war in this country, sometimes re-ferred to as the „African World War“. The main reason of this war is that many different groups are fighting to gain of control of the mines.

The main area where Coltan is mined also con-tains the Kahuzi Biega National Park, home of the Mountain Gorilla. Gorillaz are amazing ani-mals, whose DNA is closely related to the hu-man DNA. There are only 600 gorillas left in the wild, and they inhabit only a small area shared by Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

Export of coltan from the DR Congo to Euro-pean and American markets has been cited by experts, as helping to finance the present-day conflict in the Congo.
