The Power and Reach of LacrosseLacrosse Today – Youth & High School Growth

For well over a decade, lacrosse has been the fastest-growing team sport among National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) member schools.

That trend continues to be evidenced over the five-year period (2009-14):• The number of schools sponsoring boys’ lacrosse grew by 28%• The number of schools sponsoring girls’ lacrosse grew by 31%• No other sport for either boys or girls had a growth rate above 10%

Youth lacrosse (15 & under) remains the largest segment of the sport:• New York continued to top the list as the state with the most youth

players• In the last five years, the number of boys & girls playing the sport

at this age level has increased 43%

Growth across men’s and women’s lacrosse across all NCAA divisions notably outpaced all other sports from 2000-2014:

• Participation in women’s lacrosse increased by 109% (225 teams to 470), followed by indoor track (59%), ice hockey (58%), outdoor track (52%) and golf (48%)

• Among men’s sports, total lacrosse participation is up 95% (203 teams to 350) over the same period, followed by volleyball (54%), indoor track (40%), outdoor track (35%) and soccer (32%)

Participation & GrowthPull information from the US Lacrosse Participation Survey to create slides with information about the growth of the sport.

• The US Lacrosse Participation Report is produced annually to monitor participation at different levels of the sport across the country. This report counts only participation on organized teams and does not include leisure-time play of lacrosse.

• The primary source of data for this report are surveys completed by active US Lacrosse regional chapters. Data also is obtained from US Lacrosse membership records, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations and www.laxpower.com.

Education & Training• A safe and positive playing experience starts by knowing the rules and how to

appropriately and effectively coach, officiate and play the game.

• Coaches and officials need effective training - through US Lacrosse's certified training programs - to ensure athlete safety. Read more about USL's Coaching Education Program

• US Lacrosse also commits significant resources to the proper training of officials for both the men's and women's game. Read more about USL's Officials Training Program

• Women's lacrosse differs greatly from men's lacrosse and should not be played or taught the same way. Learn the differences to keep the game safe.

• To keep things safe, all lacrosse participants have a responsibility to know the rules...parents and players included! Most injuries occur as a result of rule infractions. Know the rules and participate in US Lacrosse's campaigns for fair and safe play. Men's & Women's Rules

Your Team• Put your team name as the title and explain what you have done already to help form this

team such as: developing your mission, vision, and goals; securing some or all of necessary funding, player interest and leadership, trained coaches and officials; creating a board and booster club. Also provide participation statistics fro the team if applicable, and what you anticipate future growth to be.

Funding and Support for this team• Explain how you will fund and support the cost of this team with recommendations

and ideas from the New Start manual

US Lacrosse and Community Support• Explain how you will use the support of US Lacrosse, your local US Lacrosse Chapter and any

other outside support such as sponsors to start and support your team. See the information about US Lacrosse Chapters in your New Start manual.

Proposed Timeline• You’ll want to show that you are organized and have a plan for forming your team. Present a

proposed timeline of events (including due dates for registration, recruiting coaches, meeting dates, fundraising events etc and a proposed game schedule.

School Support• Explain what you will now need from the school and/or town-remember make it as easy as

possible to say yes!
