Summary Statement: Please provide a brief description for how the analyzed data will impact your Inquiry and Action Planning process.Desert Pines HS is a large high school facing numerous academic challenges typically associated with high enrollment and a transient population that is predominately of low socioeconomic status. According to the NSPF, the percent of FRL students has increased by 19.2 percentage points over the last five years, the percent of IEP students has grown by 2.8 percentage points, and the proportion of LEP students has remained high, peaking at 30% in 2010-11. In the last four years, Desert Pines HS has increased the student graduation rate from 41.88% (class of 2011) to 46.39% (class of 2012), 57.22% (class of 2013), and 58.25% (class of 2014). Despite this improvement, a 20% graduation rate gap remains between the school's highest- and lowest-performing racial subgroups. The High School Cohort Visualization Tool helps the Desert Pines HS team monitor credit sufficiency and proficiency of students in real time, but the NSPF provides historical data. The NSPF indicates that proficiency rates have improved from the 2011-2012 to the 2013-2014 school years. This increase in ELA was from 57% to 62% proficiency, in math from 49% to 55% proficient, in writing from 52% to 59%, and in science from 56% to 62%.The Nevada Comprehensive Curriculum Audit Tool for Schools was conducted in the 2011-2012 school year. The following areas were indicated for improvement and are currently being addressed with the administrative team: all instructional staff members deliver the standards-based curriculum to all students; all instructional staff members use effective instructional strategies to meet the learning needs of all students; and all instructional staff members provide students with additional instruction and intervention as needed to improve student achievement.

HOPE 2 Intervention

Focus of Intervention:The focus of the intervention is to identify and support students who have been discipline offenders. To provide a place on site where students can stay on campus school, in a confined setting, to receive instruction in their current high school curriculum. This will allow students to complete current course work and complete their received discipline. It will help students to stay on track as they continue to receive current instruction.

Monitoring Plan:The plan will be monitored by Infinite Campus reports, conducting daily attendance checks, students completion of assignments, and teacher input. A survey of parents and students will be conducted to monitor service and possible improvements.

Evaluation Plan:Data will be tracked using Infinite Campus reports, daily attendance sheets, and surveys. Desert Pines Deans' Office will focus on the amount of student referrals and resolution types per school population. Desert Pines Deans' Office will review resolutions based on gender, ethnicity, education placement .

The target was revised as a result of a more rigorous AP pathway that was implemented in the 2015-2016 academic year. Teachers are participating in a professional development cycle supporting rigorous instruction. The pathway for AP coursework begins in grade 9. For the 2016-2017 school year AP Human Geography will be offered for freshmen students as a way to build the pathway to AP courses for students. Students are recommended for AP courses across the core curriculum (Science, Math, ELA, Social Studies), which is generated based on teacher recommendation for students receiving a “C” or higher grade in prior courses. This pathway ensures that students taking AP courses are better prepared to succeed in AP courses.

COMPONENT IV: REQUIRED ELEMENTS FOR TITLE I SCHOOLS:

Title I Schools operating a Schoolwide Program must complete Items 1 through 5 on this page.

1. Describe the school's strategies to attract effective, highly-qualified teachers to your school.Desert Pines High School offers a highly supportive environment for teachers. Teachers collaborate with their Professional Learning Communities daily. Desert Pines High School has developed a teacher mentor program in which highly-qualified teachers are paired with new teachers to provide additional supports. Administration also works to recognize teachers for their accomplishments through various teacher appreciation events.

 2. Describe the school's strategies to increase family engagement in accordance with Section 1118 of NCLB (see resource link), such as family literacy services and the provision to parents on how the school will share academic information in a language they understand.Family involvement is essential to ensure students have the support needed for a successful academic experience. At Desert Pines High School we hold a number of events designed to engage students and their families. Some of these events include the Open House, Online Registration events, the Science Fair, and PAC meetings. Notices for these events and other important information is provided in English and Spanish. In addition, a number of staff including administrators, teachers and support staff are bilingual and available to help ensure communication needs are met.

 3. Describe the school's plans for transition and articulation between school programs (ie: assisting preschool children from early childhood programs such as Head Start, Even Start, or a state-run preschool program to elementary school, elementary school to middle school, and middle to high school, etc.).To help students with the transition into high school, our counselors begin working with students in middle school. Meetings are coordinated with each of our feeder schools to provide students with information needed for registration and course selection. Counselors also review each student's academic records to ensure correct placement in core classes. When appropriate, students are placed in remedial classes. Credit checks are conducted throughout the year and counselors are able to help students understand and meet graduation requirements.

 4. Identify the measures that include teachers in decisions regarding the use of academic assessments.Teacher feedback is an important part of the decision making process. We conduct PLC meetings in addition to staff meetings where teachers are able to meet with administration to discuss any issues relevant to the school community. Conversations center around discipline, grading, assessments, and school culture. Desert Pines High School has established a School Leadership Committee and an Academic Standards Committee that meet regularly with administration to discuss school-wide policies and procedures.

 5. Provide assurance that federal, state, and local services are coordinated and integrated into the school improvement effortsAt Desert Pines High School we have a number of programs to coordinate services for students. Some of these programs include JAG Nevada, Community in Schools, Title 1 Hope, and a Student Success Advocate. All of these programs work to support students and increase their opportunities for academic success.

The Instructional Coaches facilitate professional development on effective classroom management strategies, lesson planning, as well as model lessons and provide feedback to teachers. The frame for analyzing common assessment data is the PLC where student needs are identified and addressed through supports, such as, Saturday School, or credit retrieval.

Goal 1 Additional PD Action Step (Optional)

2.1The target was revised as a result of a more rigorous AP pathway that was implemented in the 2015-2016 academic year.
