Background

• Following months of uncertainty and evaluating the ever-changing circumstances that face our community and nation, Bethel Park School District has created the following path to return in the fall of 2020.

• This plan is crafted around CDC, ACHD, PA Department of Health guidelines, recommendations in attempt to ensure the health and safety of all students, staff, and the rest of the Bethel Park Community.

• While it is not possible to mitigate 100% of risk, Bethel Park is invested to creating a safe environment for students to access learning from Bethel Park teachers, using Bethel Park Curriculum.

• Our plan ensures all students receive instruction that aligns to state standards and that they have the necessary supports for success, providing equitable opportunities for all students.

• As we present the following general plan, please understand that all aspects are subject to change based on changing COVID-19 conditions and mandates from the Governor's office, the Department of Education, Allegheny County Health Department, and the Centers for Disease Control.

• Remote Learning instruction is designed to give students the experience of being “in class” from their homes.

• There will be opportunities for students to complete work, collaborate, ask questions and receive feedback from teachers.

• The schedules of the three learning options mirror each other and are designed to enable students to seamlessly transition from one to another with full classroom return being the end goal.

• Students will be scheduled based on their Spring 2020 course selections and have an opportunity to access all the classes in the BP Course Selection Guide.

• Students will work in divided groups to reduce remote class size.

Academics: Hybrid Learning Overview

• The hybrid learning plan extends each virtual group to provide the option for partial in-class instruction.

• The staggered schedule at 50% allows students to access teachers in smaller groups and receive more attention whether learning remotely or in-person.

• Remote and hybrid students will have some flexibility in their days to avoid long durations of time in front of their computer.

• In both remote and hybrid models, students may communicate with teachers and peers through shared collaboration documents, video conferencing, etc.

• The hybrid model allows students to access school facilities and resources. Students who are learning remotely will be given alternative ways to complete task.

• Parents, students and teachers will have continuity throughout the week.

• This approach allows students to move seamlessly between remote and in person instruction based on their health circumstances or quarantine status.

Academics: Assessment/Grading

• Traditional assessments -- tests, quizzes, projects, etc. -- will be implemented in both the hybrid and remote learning options.

• Hybrid and Remote students may access materials in multiple ways, but will submit homework and class assignments digitally.

• Grading scales will be restored and calculated as described in each school’s Student Handbook for both remote and hybrid options.

• Schoology will provide parents the option to view day-to-day assignment grades.

• Daily attendance will also be monitored and accessible in Schoology.

• All other policies and procedures regarding work completion, submission, and academic integrity will be restored as described in each school’s Student Handbook for both remote and hybrid options.

• In the case a family chooses not to enter the remote and/or hybrid learning option, students may elect to attend BP Cyber School.

• The Bethel Park Online Academy (BPOA) is an online program offered by the BPSD that delivers accredited curriculum over the web.

• The BPOA is an asynchronous program only.

• While taught by highly qualified teachers, they are not BPSD faculty.

• Courses are based on the PA Common Core; they are not BPSD curriculum.

Student Services

• All student IEPs, 504s, and GIEPs will be implemented, reviewed, & revised when required and as necessary, within both the hybrid & remote options.

• School Counselors, Social Workers, Mental-Health Providers, related service providers, and other support staff will be available in-person and work through digital platforms to support students with Academics, Emotional & Social Needs, and Transitional Planning.

• Individual and/or small group Paraprofessional support provided according to student IEPs through digital platforms/tools and/or in-person during hybrid.

• Continued & consistent communication, progress monitoring, and collaboration between parents, teachers & other service providers.

• It is preferred that all IEP, 504, & GIEP meetings occur via phone conference or Google Meets.

• All evaluations and reevaluations will be conducted per the Health and Safety protocols.

Technology: Overview

• Adoption of the Learning Management System, Schoology K-12, as the meeting place and central location for class content, materials, assignments, etc. Elementary schools can also utilize Google Classroom.

• For parent and student understanding: A Learning Management System is to provide a common starting space for curricular activities that may link to other tools, websites and accounts. The parent and student start with the direction and expectations outlined in one digital location for all classes.

• Teachers and students will have access to different tools that enable screen capture/video creation to communicate, provide feedback, and demonstrate their understanding of the learning.

• Schoology will link to the gradebook where students and families can view grades faster though Home Access Center once assignments are graded in the LMS.

• The district utilizes numerous Google Applications and other online programs for student instruction, support, work completion and collaborative tools.

Health & Safety: Overview

• BPSD will not communicate the name of an individual that tests positive for COVID.

• We will attempt to identify and contact individuals who have potentially been exposed to any confirmed COVID-19 positive person within 48 hours prior to the individual developing symptoms.

• We will help you understand what you need to do, such as staying home, monitoring your health, and getting a COVID-19 test if your student was potentially exposed.

• School Messenger will be used, at both the District and school level, as our primary communication tool to parents regarding COVID-related information and alerts.

• The district social media platforms will be used accordingly and as appropriate.

• All staff are required to report confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 to Pandemic Coordinator.

Food Services: Cafeteria Procedures

• Students will have prepackaged food options available.

• Controlled groups and social distancing markers will be used to maintain social distancing while students are in the food lines.

• During lunch, students will be seated at six feet socially distanced desks.

• All desks utilized for lunch will be sanitized between student use.

• It is recommended that students follow best practices for hand washing and sanitizing before and after eating.

• Grab-and-go breakfast will be available for purchase and for food insecurity students.

• Parents/guardians of students that may require special considerations for lunch should contact Joe Consolmagno for options.

• The following seating procedures on school buses will be followed in addition to the guidelines outlined in the BPSD Reopening Health & Safety Plan.

• Seats are filled in 3 sequence levels which limits extra exposure when students cannot establish 6 feet social distancing.

• Students that live in the same household are asked to sit together to make available additional seating for other students.

• A space in the front of the bus will be allocated for any symptomatic students.

• Parents are encouraged to drive their students to school, if possible.

• Eligible BPHS students may apply for parking passes so they may drive to school.

Athletics / Activities

• This is a fluid situation that requires patience and flexibility as mandates can change. At this time fall sports are still scheduled to proceed by the PIAA/WPIAL.

• Students and parents/guardians should check with coaches/sponsors for updates on procedures for activities.

• All extracurricular activity participation is subject to all health and safety expectations. BPSD will continue to monitor COVID conditions and keep students and the community informed regarding extracurricular activity plans and modifications.
