Introduction and HistoryThe School of Natural Sciences (SNS) started in May 200! It had already

been mentioned in the Me"a#ro$ect for N%ST and "i&en its name in it! '#reliminary -1 had been #re#ared for it by *rs! M! +aue and '.ad '!Siddiui of the /asic Sciences *e#artment of the olle"e of lectrical Mechanical n"ineerin"! It had then been left #endin" for im#lementationmuch later! Hoe&er, hen rof! 's"har 3adir of the *e#artment ofMathematics of the 3uaid-i-'.am %ni&ersity, ho also or4s as a #hysicist,

too4 early retirement from his %ni&ersity in March 200 and becamea&ailable to ta4e other em#loyment in May 200, he as a##ointed as*irector of SNS!

The -1 consisted of three #hases5 the rst $ust had an Mhilleadin" to h* in Mathematics6 the second, to start four years later, an Mhilleadin" to h* in Theoretical hysics6 the third (three years later) to e7tendinto 7#erimental hysics and to start a -year /S #ro"ramme, in at leastMathematics! The intention as to ha&e 20 students admitted to each of the"raduate #ro"rammes and 0 for the /S! It too4 to years before the -1
