“It takes hard work, perseverance, and a little bit of luck to have a career in the arts. There is no easy way, and the path is riddled with fatigue and self-doubt. It is all worth it because this is my passion.”

Isabella KungBFA ‘10, Freelance Illustrator

“I was drawn to Academy of Art University mainly by the quality of the student work. I’d seen some of the pieces students had pro-duced for one of the spring shows, and I was very, very impressed. I’m very happy at the Academy. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

SCHOOL OF ILLUSTRATION

As one of the leading institutions for art and design education in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are uniquely positioned to offer students a wealth of opportunities to nurture their talent and creatively develop their craft and style as illustrators. The relationships our talented faculty have built with industry professionals are key.

Partnerships

WRITE BRAIN BOOKSYou may best remember character actress Meredith Scott Lynn from her turn in LegallyBlonde or from a number of guest appearanceson TV shows as diverse as Roswell, CSI, and Weeds. Something you probably did not know about Lynn is that she is the creator of WRiTE BRAiN BOOKS, a successful publisher of richly illustrated, textless books that seek to inspire students of all ages. The company produces creative writing curricula for all grade levels in schools across thirty-three states.

Nearly thirty students from the School of Illustration have contributed their talents to help school children ignite their creative side—their right brain—in an increasingly left brain world. As a student in the School of Illustration, you will have ample opportunity to work with Lynn and her team at WRiTE BRAiN BOOKS, which has been a partner to the school for more than half a decade.

One of the students who benefited from thepartnership is Erika Flak (BFA ’12), who now works full-time at Machine Zone, a mobile gaming app company that produces Game of War. “I worked with WRiTE BRAiN BOOKS on a huge project—10 full illustrations that were perfectly organized tofit the book,” said Ms. Flak. “It really helped me establish a very solid thought-out series of pieces, which helped me launch into a couple internships, which launched into a full-time job. I’m 100 percent positive that that’s where my career started.
