CATHARINE PARR TRAILL COLLEGEAn integral part of the college community, Traill is a living-learning centre for both undergraduate and graduate students

in Peterborough. Traill is an active, self-contained community, situated in downtown Peterborough. One of Trent’s original

colleges, it is named in honour of one of the region’s earliest European settlers and consists of a collection of old houses

of architectural and historic significance.

“ I CHOSE TRENT BECAUSE IT WAS A SMALL UNIVERSITY THAT WELCOMED INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, AND A PLACE WHERE I THOUGHT I COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE.”

– Dr. Andressa Lacerda ‘11, Ph.D. Environmental and Life Sciences, Brazil

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSAt Trent, the world learns together. Graduate Studies

welcomes students from countries all over the world as

part of its growing international student population.

THE TRENT GRADUATE STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATIONAn active part of the community, the association acts on

behalf of all graduate students. Among its many mandates,

At Trent, you will never be limited by the boundaries of

your discipline. After all, new understanding comes at the

intersection of areas of study, when you make connections

you never thought were possible.

Trent’s approach, envied by other graduate schools, is

reflective of the real world. Here, there’s always an array of

perspectives at play. We believe that bringing leading-edge

researchers together, often from across the humanities, sciences

and social sciences, is what allows us to answer and challenge

some of society’s most complex questions.

REAL-WORLD RESEARCHChoosing to learn from world-renowned researchers doesn’t mean you will be standing by. Quite the opposite, in fact. At

Trent, you are at the centre of your educational experience, and most of our programs are research intensive.

Our graduate students can be found around the world conducting hands-on research and contributing to the creation

of new knowledge. Consider an anthropological dig in Central America, trips to Indigenous communities across North

America, or monitoring polar bears in the Arctic.

STUDY BEYOND

LET YOUR SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS LEAD, AS YOU INVESTIGATE ENVIRONMENTAL AND LIFE ISSUES OF SIGNIFICANCE TO SOCIETY – AND THE WORLD.

Become a catalyst for change in what is often called “the Age of the Environment.” Pose the critical questions about the issues

of our time, and study alongside experts to find the answers. Explore environmental issues that will shape our future: the

conservation of biodiversity, the spread of contaminants and infectious diseases, the matters of sustainability and water quality.

As part of the prestigious M.Sc. or Ph.D. program, you will hone your scientific and communication skills, generate

knowledge and contribute to the future. Inspired by top-notch professors from diverse disciplines, as well as scientists from

governmental and non-governmental organizations, you will help forge new approaches to key environmental challenges.

• Take part in leading research in cell biology and genetics, ecology and conservation biology, physical geography,

trace contaminant toxicology and chemistry, and much more.

• Study in world-class research centres and institutes, built on superior funding and state-of-the-art research

equipment that support you in your investigation.

• Prepare for advanced academic training and for employment with governments, NGOs, or private industry.

• We have recurring research partnerships with government agencies, most notably the Ontario Ministry of Natural

Resources and Forestry. Nearly one quarter of our faculty are from a governmental agency and a large proportion of

our students (nearly half) have government researchers on their supervisory committees. These research partnerships

are one of the things that separate our program from those at most other universities.
