Message from the Director

TISS has been involved in addressing disasters since the 1947 partition. The Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies student and faculty interventions during Latur, Assam Riots and Uttarakhand Floods are a demonstration of our interest in understanding the ground realities of society. Our Masters programme in Disaster Management is the first of its kind in the country. This is offered as a Master of Science as well as Master of Arts programme so that students from various disciplines can join the course. The faculty hails from various disciplines and admits about 40 students every academic year. At this point in time, most of the personnel in SDMAs are our student graduates. Recently the school was involved in organizing a disaster preparedness work in Delhi as well as looking at how to address disasters across the border in Nepal. This was quite helpful because as soon as the Nepal earthquake happened, our students and faculty were able to quickly move in and be a part of the relief and rehabilitation framework. We are also continuing the work in Phase Two reconstruction. Our students of Disaster Management have always shown interest in working with various Government agencies/authorities, Multilateral agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations and Corporates. The batch of 2015-17 will graduate in early May 2017, and we are proud to present graduates for placement in your organization.

Message from the Dean

The Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies (JTSDS) evolves from TISS’s extensive work on post disaster interventions, research and its teaching programmes. The School was founded during the time period when the country’s disaster management policy and institutional framework were being formulated. Thus, considering the urgent need for socially sensitive, qualified, skilled and committed professionals in the field of Disaster Management, JTSDS conceived the Masters programme in Disaster Management in 2006 along with several other certificate and diploma programmes and have been offering the course since 2007. The decade long journey has seen rich contributions and learning around the idea of a disaster. Values of social and environmental justice have been central and therefore much of our work is concerned with People’s experiences of marginalization and distress both in pre and post disaster situations. The Masters Programme attracts participants with multi-disciplinary background and from various parts of the Country and the Globe, with substantive passion in Disaster Management. The interface of Technology and the Social Sciences and the linkages between Development and Disasters is the backbone of the programme. This enables our students to go into the field to develop as professionals with the right knowledge, attitude and aptitude for disaster management with a clear perspective grounded in social justice. I believe that the students will be a valuable resource to your organization. Message from the Placement Coordinator

Dear Recruiter, With the changing role of Disaster Management worldwide, from a response centric approach to mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction, there is a need for professionals in the field of disaster management who understand the linkages between development and disasters. The Masters in Disaster Management course in JTSDS provides this unique opportunity to aspirants to nurture their ideas and to mature as thought leaders in the field. Our students from the 2015-2017 (IXth) batch have benefitted from improvements recommended by the peer-review committee of designators involved in various facets of Disaster Management. Their exposure to Disasters and Development stems from the faculty in JTSDS, who come with immense experience in Academics and Field, along with the student’s exhaustive field visits to Rural and Urban areas. The students also benefit from Round Table and Conferences, where experienced practitioners from various fields in Disaster Management come together and discuss real-world problems. While enabling an understanding of disasters from a vantage point of science and technology in prediction, mitigation and response, the programme also fosters a critical and reflective appreciation of current debates in Disaster Management within the framework of social and environmental justice, state and civil society dynamics, development, conflict and globalization. Student learning is enriched through classroom teaching, fieldwork, internship, public lectures, training programmes, conferences, skill based workshops and guest lectures. Cross learning is also encouraged by choice based credit system, wherein our students benefit by exposure to courses in other programmes within TISS. Apart from the theoretical and experiential component, the course also offers a strong research base to students in the form of research dissertation. About TISS

2016 marks the 81st glorious year since the birth of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Since our inception, we have left no stone unturned when it comes to creating a niche in understanding, reframing and redefining social order. It was our continuous strive to pursue excellence by re-inventing academics that has made us India’s second best university, an accreditation that was conferred by NAAC. Today, TISS offers very innovative M.A programmes that are highly relevant for government agencies and civil societies at large. These programmes provide a distinctive blend of theory, practice and training to the students. Students in the programmes are also exposed to challenging field based practices, social issues, and environmental concerns through projects, field exposures and internships that they undertake with various government organizations, NGOs and CBOs as a part of their curriculum. As another academic year is nearing its end, we are delighted to present before you, a cohort of young minds with a vision and mission to find solutions and involve realistically in the state building process.

About JTSDS

The Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies pioneered disaster education in India. The decade long journey of JTSDS is an expedition of unfading memories and learnings around the idea of a disaster, nature of assessments, structuring of relief, the management of supply chains, psycho-social interventions, challenges of participatory rehabilitation, plan making within specific governance frameworks, societal contexts and people’s experiences of marginalization and distress. Our vision is to emerge as a transdisciplinary academic entity engaged in disaster studies offering quality educational programmes, research and extension services. The School seeks to influence disaster discourse, policy and practice through critical thinking based on values of social and environmental justice and equality. The School of Disaster Studies aims to:

Create professionals who can work towards better disaster preparedness, mitigation and response;

Build professional and institutional capacities of governmental and non-governmental actors;

Initiate and strengthen theoretical, cross cultural, empirical and action-oriented research on disasters, vulnerability, human security and development;

Create networks for knowledge development and sharing, coordination of

interventions and policy advocacy.

Why Us?

The evolution of Disaster Management as a multi-sectoral field is sufficiently evident. The field is progressing. To encompass all its facets requires not only expertise but also a diverse knowledge base. The master’s programme in Disaster Management at TISS caters to this need. The blending of experienced professionals and freshers from diverse backgrounds into one student body catapults the holistic development. Currently professionals from different fields coming together manage the sector. What gives us the edge over them is the fact that we have management knowledge specific to the disaster field. TISS has added new dimensions to our views and thought process. Disaster to us is not just an event in time and space. It has also taught us to think out of the box and weave together scientific knowledge and the social sector to negotiate the challenges that lie ahead.

As Post graduate students we have worked with organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, engaging with officials at micro and macro levels. We have been exposed to urban as well as rural settings through intensive field works. We have undertaken internships and have successfully applied our knowledge to the practical domain.

Planning, Policy Formulation and Review, Implementation of Policies in Disaster Domain, Monitoring and Evaluation of Ongoing Projects, R&D in the Disaster Sector and Consulting

are few of the fields to which we, as disaster professionals, can contribute and add value.

Placement process

Pre-placement talk/presentations

The organizations, which have been approached for recruitment, give a talk or a presentation. The presentation consists of talks on the history and origins of the organization, type of work done, work opportunities they offer etc. This is also when students put forth queries to the recruiter on the basis of the recruiter’s presentation.

Application/CV submission

Based on individual interest and the company's criteria for accepting applications, the list of interested eligible students would be sent to the Organization. This step needs to be done in a specified time frame. After this the Organization would be given sufficient time to shortlist candidates for further screenings and interviews.

Selection Process

After the short listing of candidates, the organization is expected to inform shortlisted students about the further recruitment process. After the final stage of selection, the organization is expected to confirm to selected candidates within 3 days, otherwise the candidates would be free to sit for other placement opportunities
