FALL 2015 AT MWPAI SCHOOL OF ARTThe School of Art program for Community Arts, founded in 1941, offers part-time, non-credit instruction for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. All classes are taught by academically qualified, active professional artists in the finest studio facilities in Central New York.

MISSIONThe Mission of the School of Art is to provide excellent instruction and the facilities for the creation, exhibition and aesthetic appreciation of the visual arts.

LETTER FROM THE DEAN

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute is dedicated to enriching the lives of people by providing rich aesthetic experiences that inspire them to experience great art and also encourage them to create their own artistic visions.

Now, after 75 years we want to reintroduce you to the School of Art. Core to the Institute’s mission is the community’s participation in the exhilarating reward that can be had in pursuing one’s own innate creativity.

Our faculty— skilled professional artists and art educators—want to share their passion, experience and knowledge with like-minded people. Whether you are a seasoned artist looking to expand and investigate new avenues and techniques for your own development, or a beginner who wants to take that first step and discover the possibilities of your talent the School of Art has classes and programs to fit your schedule and comfort level.

Taking an art class is a great way to meet interesting people and engage in conversation around the notion of creativity. Now, more than ever, art and design is celebrated in every aspect of our daily lives: in the electronic media we enjoy, the designs of our everyday products, the publications we read, and the availability of new and exciting materials. Our classes teach skills that utilize a wide variety of tools, from basic hand tools to computers to kilns and more, while emphasizing your most important tools: your hands, eyes, mind and heart.

Our drawing and painting classes are held in the School of Art Studio Building, a three-level, 23,000 square foot facility designed specifically for higher art education. The drawing and painting studios on the second level feature ample space and airy, vaulted ceilings. Each studio is furnished with sinks, easels, tables, lighting, and a substantial reservoir of still life subject matter.

THE FIGURE DRAWING SALONAges 18 + / All Levels / Annette Gurdo

A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host. The direct analysis of the human form and translating that interaction to paper is critical to an artist. Humans have been the subject of drawings since prehistory. This salon will explore gesture drawing, contour drawing and other methods of recording a direct response to the figure. A nude model will be used. Both six-week sessions may be taken sequentially to learn a large range of techniques.

ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The new Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program at MWPAI supports emerging artists who are furthering their academic voice within a developed studio practice. Resident artists are selected and invited to live and work on the Institute’s campus for a year and teach within the Communi-ty Art program. Our residency represents a symbiotic relationship between the visiting artist and the Mohawk Valley’s art population. Each resident provides fresh insights, expertise, and awareness of new techniques to our community art students as well as energizing faculty and staff. We look forward to welcoming new AIR’s offering classes and workshops in the upcoming 2016/17 sessions.
