UHM School of Architecture presentation to the UH President and UHM ProvostOctober 12, 2020
School of Architecture Context: The School of Architecture has many supporters in the community. This reorg – even though it will preserve the School as a standalone school under the College – will result in concern and resistance among some. Details • The College of Engineering currently offers the BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Civil
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering; and BS degrees in Computer Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Engineering Science.
• With the recommended changes, the size of the College will grow considerably.

Existing proposal concerns
• SOA would be greatly reduced in status and autonomy.• SOA is home to the only accredited professional degree
progam in the State.• SOA and CoE can collaborate (and continue to collaborate)
without merger.• SOA would like to engage in a more in-depth and inclusive
planning process for the future of the school and other related disciplines.
• Engage stakeholders and the broader community in a process that identifies and analysis true program needs across disciplines.
• Arrive at a solution that answers long term educational needs for sustainable, resilient, and equitable economic development.
The School of Architecture responds to our unique location in the Asia-Pacific region and recognizes the privilege and responsibility to address cultural, environmental, and social diversity. We commit to passionate and engaging community participation through teaching, learning, research, professional practice, and service.
Mission
An architect has to be a bit of a sociologist, lawyer, and psychologist. He has to know human nature.

Professional Architecture Community Response
To put Architecture back into Engineering would be a retrograde move programmatically.
While architecture and engineering are complementary, the former has an undeniably creative and artistic aspect that I fear will be overshadowed by a technical focus in the event of a merger, severely stunting the design capabilities of future students which is essential to their daily work as Architects.

Professional Architecture Community Response
Architects are essential in crafting and creating the built environment. The Hawaii Architectural Foundation (HAF) supports the School of Architecture as the only accredited Architectural program in the state. As a conduit for future architects to the many local architectural firms, HAF supports any movement that strengthens the independent teaching ability of the School of Architecture and their ability to remain an accredited program.

Hawaii Chapter of American Society of Lanscape of Architects Joint Statement October 7, 2020
... Should such analysis and empirical evidence demonstrate that an alliance with another unit on campus is beneficial or necessary for budgetary reasons, from our professional point of view, an engineering college is neither a customary nor appropriate fit for design/creative-focused programs such as landscape architecture, architecture, and environmental design.
... From our disciplinary perspective, we encourage even closer collaboration between SOA and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and possibly also the arts.

SOA Alumni Association Response
The University of Hawai‘i School of Architecture Alumni Association (UHSAAA) supports the School of Architecture’s stance to maintain its autonomous status within the University of Hawai‘i system. It is our pride and joy to be part of the UH family and to call ourselves alumni from the School of Architecture.

SOA Faculty and Staff response
School of Architecture Faculty Response to the Suggestions of the Manoa Budget Committee September 28, 2020
The School of Architecture is committed to working with all stakeholders to develop solutions to our shared and immediate challenges, including COVID-19 induced budget shortfalls. We also remain committed to developing organizational strategies and program development ideas which will strengthen the School and University over the long term. As we move forward together we propose exploring other reorganization and development ideas which maintain SoA administrative autonomy and enhance and grow our design programs with meaningful and lasting impact for the State of Hawaiʻi.

If I saw UH’s MLA program was located in the engineering department, even with the program’s current strengths, I would not have applied to UH Manoa.-MLA student
Reaction of current students
September 2020
I just feel like SOA should merge with the planning department instead of engineering. Our required classes in undergrad called for more planning classes than engineering.- DARCH student
