Greetings! This is an extremely busy time of the year (when is it not!) with end of the year activities,

field trip preparations, making plans for summer school, and returning medications to families. It is my

hope that you will be able to take a moment this week and particularly tomorrow, to celebrate your

accomplishments. School nurses are the vital link between health and learning. School nurses make a

positive impact on children everyday!

It was energizing to spend time with many of you at the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses Annual

Conference April 26-28, 2017. Thanks to those of you who introduced yourself to me. Please contact

me if I, or the Department of Public Instruction, can be of any assistance to you. I am looking forward to

traveling next week to meet with some of the school nurses in the Milwaukee and CESA #1 area ( see

attached flyer).

NASN has a Live Stream option for the conference this year. This is the perfect option for

anyone unable to attend the NASN conference in person. Six general sessions over four days will be live

streamed. Attendees can earn 7.25 continuing nursing education contact hours. Those who register for

the Live Stream event will have access to the sessions for 90 days after the conference. They can watch

in real time or "catch up" anytime within those 90 days. Live Stream attendees will be required to

complete an evaluation before receiving their CNE certificates.

available online only. The goal is to have the booklet ready for distrbution in July or early

August.

(AAFA) declares May to be "National Asthma and Allergy

Awareness Month." It's a peak season for asthma and allergy

Opioid Antagonist Bill Passes both House and Senate

Special Session Bill 1 passed the State Senate May 2, 2017, and now awaits Governor Walker’s

signature. This changes our school medication law 118.29. Similar to the emergency epinephrine and

glucagon clauses it will allow school staff to “administer an opioid antagonist to any pupil or other

person who appears to be undergoing an opioid-related drug overdose if, as soon as practicable, the

school bus operator, employee, or volunteer reports the drug overdose by dialing the telephone

number “911" or, in an area in which the telephone number “911" is not available, the telephone

number for an emergency medical service provider.” It also affords immunity from civil liability.

DPI has not issued any guidance at this time. School districts are encouraged to work with their district

legal counsel when developing policies.

Chronic Health Needs Survey – Input still needed!

The Wisconsin Association of School Nurses (WASN) is partnering with the National Association of

School Nurses, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and the Wisconsin Department of

Health Services to conduct a needs assessment with school nurses across the state to understand needs

related to care for students with chronic health conditions. As a school nurse in Wisconsin, WASN

values your input. The needs assessment should take between 10 to 15 minutes to complete. It is open

to ALL Wisconsin school nurses. You do not need to be a WASN member. Deadline May 12, 2017

Seeking Public Input on ESSA draft

DPI has published a first draft (Version 1.0) of our state plan application under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). It is available at www.dpi.wi.gov/esea, along with a survey instrument to gather public input on the draft. The survey will be open until the end of June, and in May DPI will be announcing listening sessions to be held in June. _____________________________________________________________________________________

training academy for high school educators that teach one or more courses related to health science

education or medical careers exploration. School nurses are asked to pass along this information to the

Lead Levels in School Drinking Water

The Department of Health Services would like to share information about U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency guidance on lead in drinking water at schools and childcare facilities. This guidance, “3Ts for

Reducing Lead in Drinking Water in Schools and Child Care Facilities,” is a good starting point for any

schools that that are interested in understanding lead levels in their drinking water. The guidance

includes information on educating school officials about lead in drinking water, assessing lead in drinking

water at schools, addressing any identified issues, and methods for communicating with families, staff,

and the larger community about these efforts. It is our hope that increased awareness of these

materials will make sure that any school testing programs are technically sound, draw on expertise at

the local and state levels, and involve sufficient community engagement.

Beaver Dam Unified School District for 24 years and has experiences

at both the state (WASN) and national (NASN) levels. She will be

sharing best practices for summer school coverage, good delegation

practices and how to plan for delegation. There will be time for Louise

to answer questions as well.

The School Nurse Network will be meeting on a regular basis during

Are you seeking to learn how to infuse health careers, medical knowledge and technical skills into your health science curriculum? In this training, you will develop a deeper understanding for health careers and perform technical skills used in various health professions - a “learn by doing” model to bring back to your classrooms! No doubt the knowledge and skills gained from this training will help you to prepare and support the next generation of healthcare professionals!

Professional development training related to the knowledge and skills in health care is limited to high school educators wanting to expand their ability to deliver robust and experiential learning opportunities for their students who have a strong desire to explore the Health Science Career Pathways. At a time when healthcare is rapidly changing and health profession training programs are undergoing admission and curricular changes it is essential educators have the knowledge and advisement skills needed to help support students in college and career preparedness. Additionally, there is a greater need for quality CPR/AED training for educators in response to WI legislation passing a bill to have all students learn basic life support skills prior to graduation.
