School Newsletter Term 1 Week 1 2017 Welcome to this first edition of your school newsletter. I do hope that your first experiences with our school this year have been positive, and that you and your family feel a welcome part of our school community. It has been really good to welcome new families, and to welcome back our families with previous experience at Kirkwood. The children all seem settled and enjoying the first week of 2017. I know the staff are keen to ensure that this year is both successful and enjoyable, and I know that, by working together, we can make the most of the time we have. Next week our Year 7 camps begin. Let’s hope for good weather for all of our camps, and a big thank you to all of the adults who are able to support our Education Outside the Classroom experiences. A big thank you as well to all of the staff who work so hard to make sure these camps are a safe and enjoyable experience. Attached to this newsletter you will find a copy of our “Complaints and Concerns” policy. Whilst I hope you will not have to use this, if you do have a problem or concern, please make sure you help us, by getting in touch as soon as you can. We value the opportunity to work with you to make the best of every situation. Also attached is a copy of the Blues award programme. Please remember that the criteria are under review. We will notify you of any changes that may occur. Winning a Blue is not always easy, but it is something that many of our children aspire to, and we love acknowledging our children’s success. If you have any questions about the Blues please do not hesitate to ask. The next PTA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 22 February at 7pm. All parents are very welcome to join this group of dedicated parents who help around the school with fundraising, spending the money they raise, and supporting the school at a range of events from disco’s to new families evenings. The PTA meet 2 or 3 times per term, and meetings seldom go over one hour. Please feel welcome to contact the school if you would like more information. The Board of Trustees will next meet on Thursday 23 February. These meetings are open to the public, and usually last around 2 hours. If you are interested in finding out more about the Board please feel welcome to contact the school or the Board Chair, Mrs Victoria Sergel on 021 736841. We have a number of new staff who have joined Kirkwood this year. I know they are enjoying their new positions, and I look forward to working alongside them this year. Thank you for making the choice to become or remain a part of the Kirkwood community. I do hope you will enjoy your association with our school. Best wishes Phil Tappenden Principal

Welcome to Our New Staff for 2017

Joanna Lim (Year 8 Classroom Teacher) My name is Joanna Lim and at school, I am also known as Mrs. du Toit. I am looking forward to my first year at Kirkwood Intermediate. I am passionate about learning and believe in building strong teacher-student relationships. Prior to this, I was employed as a classroom, computer studies and ESOL teacher at different international schools. These experiences have taught me to recognise and celebrate the unique values, beliefs and attitudes that students bring with them to school. I cannot wait for the discoveries and adventures my students and I will have this year!

Michelle Russell (Year 8 Classroom Teacher) Hi, my name is Michelle Russell and I come to you from Halswell School. Previous to that I enjoyed relieving here at Kirkwood, and because of this I know the school well and I am really excited to be back teaching The Boutique' Room 2 as part of the Year 8 team. I attended University and Teacher's College in Otago, and have studied in the UK. While spending 16 years living in London and on the South Coast of England, I enjoyed teaching at a variety of schools, however, I am enjoying the more sports orientated approach to education that New Zealand has! I have two children, one of which is beginning in Year 7 this year, and we are both super excited to be a part of this amazing group of people and the opportunities which Kirkwood offers to everybody. Wishing you all a fabulous 2017 - here is hoping it's happy and successful for us all

Lawry Pledge (Technology Teacher) Tēnā koutou. I am originally from London then moved to New Zealand in 1993. Since then I have taught technology mainly in Christchurch at Intermediate and Secondary schools and especially enjoy the Intermediate age group.

On a personal note, I am married and have two high school aged girls. I enjoy mountain bike riding as well as the usual DIY projects when time allows.

I am excited about joining the amazing technology team at Kirkwood Intermediate, and I am looking forward to an interesting and fun year working in T5. Hei konā mai.

Alison Xie (International Student Coordinator)

Kia ora. My name is Alison Xie. I am originally from China. I graduated from a Chinese Teachers’ College in 1992 and had been teaching English in a high school for 12 years until I came to New Zealand in 2004\-+. In New Zealand I studied a Master of Education and also a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood) at the University of Canterbury. I was on the Kirkwood Intermediate Board of Trustees for 3 years, which was a great opportunity to know how the school system ran. After I left the BOT, I have still helped some students and families who needed language support also translating some documents into Chinese for both our school website and sister schools in China. My son Tiger was a student of Kirkwood and now he has completed his high school education. It is time for me to have a change, concentrating more on supporting international students and their families. I am a passionate, outgoing woman with a smile on my face all the time. As a teacher or supporting staff in the educational field for 25 years, I really love communicating with young adults, their families and teachers. I believe that all students deserve to be in an environment where they can express themselves as individuals. With the care and support from Kirkwood Intermediate, the international students can settle down quickly to explore and interact with peers, activities and local culture.

I am very excited to be a part of Kirkwood Intermediate and look forward to working with you all, letting the international students and their families know that sending their child to Kirkwood is a smart decision for their life.

Paul Williamson (Year 8 Classroom Teacher) I have been teaching for several years at a variety of educational institutions, with experience ranging from teaching at Year 5 to Year 12. My recent experiences have been in the Year 7 & 8 level, a favourite age group to teach. I have taught in various cities in New Zealand and have spent a year teaching in London. I have a passion for Physical Education, Literacy, Numeracy, and utilising digital tools that enhance education. Outside of school I really enjoy spending time with my family, watching sports (particularly when the Highlanders beat the Crusaders!) and doing ‘blokey’ stuff around home. I am looking forward to working with your children and being a member of the wonderful Year 8 team.

Sun Safe Procedure

1.0 Kirkwood encourages pupils to be responsible in protecting themselves from over exposure to the sun during the high-risk months - October to March.

2.0 How? 2.1 Increasing pupil and parent awareness of melanoma, and practical ways of

skin protection. 2.2 Developing strategies which encourage responsible decision-making about

skin protection. 2.3 Working towards a safe school environment which provides shade for pupils

and staff. 2.4 Encouraging pupils and staff to wear protective clothing, sun hats and

sunscreen for high-risk times such as sport, lunchtimes, camps and trips. 3.0 Staff will promote sun safe behaviour by taking all reasonably practical steps to:

3.1 Encourage during terms one and four, pupils to bring and wear a sun hat that gives protection to face, ears and neck, (i.e. preferably not a baseball cap), to provide good protection during physical education, sport and at lunchtimes;

3.2 Encourage the wearing of clothing which protects skin from the sun; 3.3 Encourage the use of SPF 30+ Broad Spectrum sunscreen before going out

in the sun; 3.4 Encourage staying in the shade where possible and avoiding sunbathing; 3.5 Scheduling sports events, fitness activities or P.E. whenever possible at times

when the sun is not at its highest; 3.6 Providing lessons to students about skin care and personal responsibility in

accordance with the Health, PE and Science programmes; 3.7 Encourage pupils to wear rash shirts when swimming.

Parents – please read and familiarise yourselves with the following policies.

Care of Children Policy

The following guidelines are provided as a means for dealing with the potentially delicate matter of care arrangements and parenting orders of students enrolled at Kirkwood Intermediate School. 1 Details of care arrangements will be collected at the time of enrolment and noted on the

school enrolment form.

2 The parent who has care of a student will be asked to put in writing any arrangements they may have for any other parent or guardian to visit or collect the student from school.

3 If a parenting order is in place, copies of the order will be taken and:

given to the student’s teacher;

filed with the enrolment form.

Details of care and contact arrangements will be recorded on the Student Manager system on the ‘sensitive’ page by the office manager.

At the beginning of each year teachers will be advised of any parenting orders and/or sensitive information pertaining to students entering their classroom.

4 Parents will be prompted annually via the school newsletter, to advise the school of any

changes to care arrangements. Beyond this, the onus is on the parents to keep the school fully informed.

5 Teachers and ancillary staff will be informed of care and contact arrangements where they

exist. Staff will ensure Privacy Act requirements are adhered to. 6 Where requested, copies of the student’s reports and school newsletters will be sent to any

guardian of a student. 7 All visitors to the school will be requested to report to the school office. 8 Should a parent with contact arrangements enter the school either to collect or visit their

child, they will be directed to the Principal or his/her delegate. 8.1 If written notification about visits to, or collection of, the child has not been received,

the Principal or his/her delegate will contact the parent who has care of the child to seek permission for the visit/collection to take place.

8.2 If permission cannot be gained, the visit/collection will not take place. 9 At the beginning of each year, during the individual meetings held with staff, the Principal

shall ascertain that staff are familiar with these procedures.

Care of Children and Contact Arrangements I __________________________ being the parent of ___________________________ and who has care of ________________________________________(name of student) hereby give permission for ________________________________________________ to visit my child/children at, or collect my child/children from Kirkwood School without giving prior notification to the school of each visit / collection.

Concern and Complaints Policy

1.0 The School is open to the concerns/complaints of students, staff and parents. This policy is communicated to parents/caregivers, students and staff early each year and will be available on the website. It encourages communication and resolution of concerns/complaints at the earliest opportunity.

2.0 Guidelines

2.1 The prompt resolution of concerns/complaints through direct communication/dialogue between parties concerned is always the preferred option.

2.2 The appropriate progression is:

2.2.1 The complainant makes an appointment to see the individual concerned

with a view to explaining, discussing and trying to resolve their concern/complaint. Both parties may elect to have a support person present. If the concern/complaint is not resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned in 2.1, then the complainant makes an appointment with the Principal;

2.2.2 The Principal arranges a meeting between the complainant, person to whom the concern/complaint was first directed and the Principal with a view to explaining, discussing and trying to resolve their concerns/complaint. Both parties shall be encouraged to have a support person present. Students must have a parent/caregiver present;

2.2.3 If the concern/complaint is not satisfactorily resolved during step 2.2.2, the complainant may give a formal written notice of their concerns/complaint to the Board of Trustees. In this notice, the complainant must outline the processes they have exercised to date and the general nature of their concerns/complaint;

From receipt of the complainant’s formal written notice of concern/complaint the New Zealand School Trustees Association Guidelines, as shown in Appendix 1, will form the basis of further action to be taken.

2.3 At all stages of this procedure any party who is the subject of a complaint will be

kept informed of the complaint and the procedures for dealing with it and be advised to consult with and seek support from authorized representatives, colleagues or other organizations.

Appendix 1

Kirkwood School Board of Trustees Complaints Procedure

Shaded area denotes “public excluded meetings”.

Letter of complaint is acknowledged by the Chairperson and the complainant advised of the next steps in the Board process. The letter becomes part of the correspondence that will be dealt with at the next Board meeting while the public is excluded.

Letter is tabled at Board meeting (with the public excluded) and referred to relevant parties for reporting back to the Board. The Board decides whether to deal with the matter as a whole or appoint a committee to investigate and recommend to the Board.

At the meeting of the Board/committee the reports are received and the parties may be invited to speak to their complaint or answer questions. The Board/committee considers the evidence and /or information and comes to a decision or recommendation.

Depending on the delegated powers of the committee either they or the Board as a whole come to a resolution as to how the Board will respond and/or what action will be taken.

The Board’s response is communicated to the parties to the complaint. This may be either publicly or confidentially depending on the case.

Any of the parties may request the Board to reconsider their decision – however normally for such a reconsideration to take place new information that would have been relevant to the Board’s deliberations must be produced.

Year 8 HPV Vaccination Programme

2017 Year 8 School Based HPV Vaccination Programme Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection which can cause several cancers affecting both men and women later in life. Early HPV immunisation offers the best protection against contracting this virus. Starting 2017, both girls and boys in Year 8 will be offered free HPV Vaccination through the school based programme. A new updated version of the vaccine (Gardasil 9) will cover more strains of the virus, providing cover with 2 doses rather than 3 with Gardasil 4. The vaccination will continue to be available within the GP Practices, however, we encourage you to participate in the school based programme. Girls and boys who have partially started the process with their GP will have the option to complete the course through the school based programme. To enable students to receive the vaccination at school, parents will need to complete the consent form which will be sent home with the student along with supporting information during the first weeks of term one. Please check with your child or the school to ensure you receive the consent form and information pack. For more information about the vaccine, contact Public Health Nursing Service at 03 383 6877 Ext. 99469 or 99698, talk to your doctor, practice nurse or visit www. health.govt.nz/hpv.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSES Public Health Nurses (PHN) are Registered Nurses employed by the Canterbury District Health Board to provide a free service to children and their families aged 5-18 years. All schools in Canterbury have a PHN assigned to their school to assist with health concerns. Public Health Nurses specialize in child and family health, they are able to meet with you at home, school or work to provide health support, assessment, advice and coordinate family health or support services if required. Public Health nurses often act as a link between home, school and the health sector when a child/young person has health needs.

If you are worried about your child’s health you can make a referral or it can be made (with your permission) by school staff. Common referrals to the PHN service include day and night time wetting (Bed Alarm Programme), diabetes, soiling, developmental concerns, allergies and anaphylaxis, head lice, asthma, behavioural concerns, nutrition, hygiene, mental health issues, care and protection concerns. Public Health Nurses may refer on to a variety of social services agencies once assessments have been made; in agreement with the family. They are able to provide health resources and health information. Your PHN can be contacted either through your school or the Public Health Nursing Services on 383 6877 ext 99622, Mob: 027 2211236, Email: [email protected] Website: www.cdhb.govt.nz/phns
