PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

We have had a very exciting start to 2018, with the introduction of Project Based Learning in year 7 and 8, sports carnivals, success in many interschool sports competitions, Harmony Day cultural celebrations, Observation rounds and a number of successful student performances.

On Monday 9th April Granville South hosted staff from Granville Boys and Birrong Boys in Observations Rounds, as part of staff professional development in our Curiosity and Powerful Learning program. We are a pilot NSW school in the implementation of the Curiosity and Powerful Learning program and the Observation rounds provide feedback and insight into the teaching and learning taking place in classrooms across the school. We had 9 teachers and their classes visited by staff from the 3 schools including REAL Project Based Learning in years 7 and 8, Support unit IM and IO, English, Maths and Science. The feedback was very positive, supporting the implementation of a number of teaching and learning focus areas that have been delivered as professional development to teachers. This includes Learning Intentions, Narrative and Pace, Higher Order Questioning, Groupwork, Concept Attainment, and Feedback.

I am very proud of the achievements of many of our students this term, and their contributions to the success of our school community. You will find examples of sporting achievements in this newsletter and on our Facebook page. Those parents who were able to attend our Harmony Day assembly were treated to an amazing array of talent, with performances in vocals, Arabic Drumming, and Pasifika dancing and singing. This was followed by lunch time activities. The drumming continued in the canteen area, with dozens of students, staff and parents dancing and enjoying their time together. Thank you to the parents who donated food, and to the staff, students and parents who assisted in making this day a success. It really was exceptional.

We have welcomed many new staff to our school this year, including Mrs Hill as Business Manager, Ms Magbanua in English, Ms Khan in HSIE, Mr Deo in TAS, Ms Sheppard in TAS, Ms Dabliz in Maths, Ms Twaddle in PDHPE, Ms Simmons in CAPA, Ms Wright in CAPA, Ms Kahlon in Science, and Ms Naidu in Science. We have also welcomed Ms Fogg as Head Teacher in TAS and Mr Anderson as Head Teacher in Maths.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to term 2.

Deputy Principal’s report Term 1 2018

Welcome to Term1, 2018 to all our parents, students, staff and members of our school community.

To the Year 7 Students 2018: Your first step towards your HSC, educational pathways and lifelong learning started this term just like the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.

I have met with many Year 9 students to discuss strategies to improve their academic progress and ensure that they’re attending school on time and are going to all their classes.

Wishing our Year 11 students all the very best with their assessment tasks and assignments and hope that they continue on striving to achieve their personal best.

We have some great teams to facilitate learning and help our students along the way by building on their strengths and developing their weaknesses:

- Wellbeing team - SRC- student leadership - Teaching and Learning

We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning school and our LEARN expectations which are as follows:

Listen Equipped Achieve Respect and Responsibility Never give up At GSCAPAHS we also have:

The 2018 school year began with a lot of excitement as we welcomed all our new students and returning students in Years 8-12. It was good to see all students quickly settling in to the new school year and engaging in all the learning experiences that are offered at our school. With the departure of Mr Price, I also began the school year as Acting Deputy Principal, responsible for Years 8, 10 and 12 and Support.

This term our school has offered some great programs and learning experiences for our students, such as the Sydney Tower Restaurant excursion for our Year 12 students and ‘Meet the Teachers’ afternoon for parents of students in our Support Unit.

I am still concerned about the traffic congestion outside the school, particularly in the afternoon. Parents are reminded that traffic regulations should be followed to ensure the safety of students and staff when leaving the school. Council rangers have been outside the school of late recording infringements.

Those students who catch buses are reminded that they are to carry the correct Opal card for their journey. The bus companies count the number of students using their services and arrange bus routes around need.

I ask that parents discuss the importance of punctuality and attendance with their children. The school day begins at 8.50am with roll call. It is essential that students have arrived at school by this time. Additionally, students need to be at lessons on time during the day. Lateness to class interrupts the learning process for other students in the class and may result in the lateness being recorded as a partial truancy.

As a Positive Behaviour for Learning school, I would like to emphasise our LEARN expectations and encourage all our students to LISTEN, be EQUIPPED, ACHIEVE, RESPECT and be RESPONSIBLE and NEVER GIVE UP!

In conclusion, I wish all students a safe and happy holiday.

EWS FROM WS FMINISTRATION OTHE A

School fees School fees have been sent home for the 2018 year, setting out your child(ren)’s school contribution and subject charges. The school relies on the support of parents and carers in making these payments so that we can provide better resources to support our students’ learning. There are two types of school payments: Voluntary School Contributions - which assists in the purchase of textbooks, library resources, computer technology, paper, photocopying and stationary, and Subject Charges - which are used to purchase materials used by students in class eg: paint, food and timber. Subject charges are not voluntary and must be paid by any student who elects to study a course/s that has a subject charge. School contributions and subject charges may be made at the office by cash, cheque or EFTPOS or via the school website using the Parent Online Portal. To use the Parent Online Portal go to the school website – click on ‘make a payment’ and complete all details. To ensure payments are made to the correct areas, eg excursion, subject contributions, etc . please ensure that all information is entered correctly. Payments can only be processed with Visa or Mastercard. School contribution fees may be paid to the school in instalments. Receipts are issued for all monies collected. Please retain your receipt. Thank you to those parents who have supported the school by paying their child’s school fees. Family Details The School needs to ensure its records are up to date at all times. Whenever there is a change to your family details, for example a change of phone number, or a change to an emergency contact, the School must be informed. This can be done by completing a new Student/Family Details Form which can be obtained at the school Front Office, or by ringing the School. If you have not supplied an email address please do so as a matter of urgency. School Uniform Term 2 will bring the beginning of cooler weather. The school jumper can be purchased from either Lowes in Merrylands or Oz Fashions in Granville. Hoodies are NOT an acceptable item of clothing to wear to school. Students travelling overseas – The school requires 2 weeks notice when a student is travelling overseas during school terms. An application form is to be obtained from the office, completed and returned with a copy of the airline ticket. Students in years 9-12 are also required to get work from their teachers which are to be entered on the ‘Contract of Completion of Work’ form which must be returned to the office. Thank you for your support with the above matters. S Hill Business Manager

Granville South CAPA HS entered an Open Boys team into the Sydney West Basketball Knockout Competition this year. Round 1 was played against Merrylands High School. After Merrylands High got off to a great start, Granville South CAPA HS finished the first half strong, cutting the MHS lead to half. After a highly competitive second half, the Merrylands team was just too strong, and in the end won the game 30 - 12. Congratulations to Jakob Kaihea who was voted ‘Man of the Match’ by his teammates.

CAPA

The girls in Visual Arts Ensemble were given the opportunity to work collaboratively with local women artists from Welcome Studio in Guilford. The underlying purpose for the partnership was to explore and discover ways to mobilise social change through creativity. They spent part of it thinking about the rights of women and issues affecting them. They participated in a range of workshops including printmaking, collage, jewellery making, and finished with a large-scale mural titled ‘Girl Power’. The girls should be proud of their achievements and the positive impact they have made on the school and the local community.

Ms Wright

“The woman here is standing on top of buildings, with space as the background, to show that she is ‘on top of the world’ - she is capable of anything. She also has the head of a gorilla because gorillas are very intelligent, but a lot of people don’t realise it. In the same way the intelligence and capability of many women around the world is not recognised, or is even silenced.”

As part of their Food and Beverage studies, students in Year 12 Hospitality are required to demonstrate their competence in a variety of areas including hot beverage service. Students have been pleased to have had the support of the staff at the school, who have come to the Café Teaching and Learning Space in the common room to place their orders for a variety of coffees, teas and hot chocolates. The students may not have achieved their top speeds as yet, however, by all accounts, the quality of the drinks served is as good as any commercial coffee shop. Well done and congratulations to our Baristas of the Future!

Northcott Swimming Carnival This term, the Support Unit once again competed in the annual Northcott Secondary Interschool Swimming Carnival. One of our favourite events of the year, we entered over 40 swimmers into over 100 races! We enjoyed seeing our competitive swimmers take out top 3 placings in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breastroke; and even had our non-swimmers place in their novelty events. It was a fantastic day of swimming, meeting students from other schools and celebrating many achievements. We look forward to competing in the Northcott Athletics Carnival later this year. Autobiography Of A Backpack

I was bought from Kmart in Merrylands by my owner. I am a backpack and I am blue. I was picked up by a mum with her nine year old son, she was buying it for him for school. The child took me to school every day from Monday to Friday. He showed me to his friends, his cool blue bag. Although he really liked the bag, he did not take very good care of me. He tossed me around and was very rough with me. One day I got lost and was found by a girl who took very good care of me, she put me into the washing machine, cleaned me up and took me with her to her university. Eventually I got torn up and she got rid of me. I got drained into the sewer. Ibrahim Qablawi (Year 8)

Autobiography of a Computer. Year 7

I am a computer. One day Michael played a game on me and lost. Michael stamped on me. I broke and went to Bankstown to the computer shop to be repaired. My owner lost interest in me. I was sold. A guy bought me, wanted to play games on me and even liked to do research, so he felt I was not good enough. I was sold again. My next customer was Johnny who treated me with love. He was getting education and games out of me. Sometimes he uses me to watch videos on You Tube. I got lucky as Johnny got a new computer and I have become a spare in the cupboard. One day I came in use, his computer got a virus, so he pulled me out, I was brand new so he used me for research. He thought of playing games on me again, so he upgraded me. I was looked up to again. He thinks that I am capable of better graphics so he kept me for his special computer game challenge. Mohammad EL Dadoun

I was born in a shop. My owner Adam does homework on me, he watches YouTube and plays game. My owner played a lot of games specially Fortnite. One game was bad. I broke, my owner went to fix me. The person who fixed me charged $50.00. He now doesn’t like me. It is sad because he has put me in the bin. The truck got me, I felt a poor boy got me out. He played good games not bad, it was the best! Poor people do not have a lot of money so I cannot do better but I am still happy because I am safe now as my owner is kind to me.
