Year 6 Induction Day
On Wednesday 27th June, we welcomed many of our
new students from our September Year 7 intake for their
Induction Day. The students experienced a wide range of
activities to help them settle into the life of secondary
school, which included lessons in food technology,
languages and science. In the afternoon, they took part
in extra curricular activities including sports, art and
music. Students also received certificates rewarding them
for their excellent participation throughout the day. We
look forward to meeting more of our new Year 7
students this Wednesday at the reserve Induction Day
and to welcoming them to the school community.
SCHOOL NEWS La Fosca Sports Water Trip 2018
On Friday 15th of June, a group of Year 8
and Year 9 students set off to La Fosca for
a sports water trip for 9 days. Then after
travelling for 24 hours by coach, the
students had an amazing experience, which
truly was a trip of a lifetime. Students got
to make new friends, as well as develop
their social and team work skills. The trip
also opened the students up to other
cultures and gave them the opportunity to
try and develop skills in other activities that
are not available in the school year, for
example sailing. A great trip all round!

THEME & WORD OF THE WEEK Education, Education, Education –
‘Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to
be done, whether you like it or not.’
Maverick A person who thinks and acts in an independent way, often behaving
differently from the expected or usual way. Maverick is also a term used for a
young calf.

Year 12 scale the Eiffel Tower!
First of all it must be said that this trip was absolutely
amazing and beyond anything that the teachers or
students could have expected.
For four days, Year 12 visted
the Champagne region of France.
Staying with a Champagne
producer, showed first-hand how
Champagne was made and gave
a chance to take in the beautiful
French countryside on horseback.
A truly memorable experience!
Students also spent a day in Paris
where they braved the Eiffel
Tower and saw the beauties of
the magnificent city.
The students really enjoyed their
time away and their chance to
develop their language skills. A massive thank you
from the school to our host Virginie who was so kind
to have us.

Girls’ STEM Workshop
Following on from the Girls’ STEM Workshop in
February, the Kingsdale Science Department
arranged an exciting trip for Year 7 and 8 girls to
the Emirates Aviation Experience in North Greenwich
on Friday 22nd June 2018 to celebrate its annual
Women in Engineering and Aviation Day. This was
an excellent opportunity for the girls to learn more
about science and engineering within the aviation
field. They explored the history and stories of
famous female engineers and pilots and they were
even able to take to the sky and become a pilot in
a flight simulator.

Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents
Book Title: The Underground Railway
Author: Colin Whitehead
Age Range: 14+
Why students should read it?
Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all the slaves but
especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into
womanhood - where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her
about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. As Whitehead
brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, his narrative
seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the
unfulfilled promises of the present day.
The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman's ferocious will to
escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.
