School Prospectus

Dear Parents/Guardians,

At The Heathland, young people are educated in a calm, happy and orderly climate with a clear focus on learning. We are proud of our motto ‘Committed to Excellence’. This means we strive for high academic standards for all pupils. Our approach to discipline and pastoral care is based on traditional standards – respect for staff, courtesy and good manners. We positively encourage pupils from the time they start in Year 7 to aim for a good university. Generations of former pupils have benefited from the breadth of our curriculum which at GCSE always included all the elements of the ‘English Baccalaureate’. The Heathland is renowned for its strength in Mathematics and Science. The range of our curriculum starting from Year 7 shows we equally value the Arts, Humanities and Modern Languages.

The sixth form at The Heathland School has a reputation for academic excellence, and is a vibrant community which plays a major part in the life of the school as a whole. Each year over 90% of our Y13 leavers progress to Higher Education, with a significant proportion of these students going to the top Russell Group universities.

The school’s record of success is without doubt determined by a team of well qualified, talented and committed staff delivering quality lessons, setting high expectations and providing a remarkable range of enrichment activities.

We appreciate the care required in choosing the right secondary school for your child. We are unique in being open to visits when it suits you as parents. Please arrange to see us during the day with your son or daughter. I hope you will see for yourself – “students are proud of their school and enjoy their education” – one of a number of accolades from our last Ofsted Inspection.

I look forward to seeing you.

Welcome to The Heathland School

‘high academic standards for all pupils’The majority of our students stay into our 6th form which is a vibrant community at the heart of the school. We welcome applicants to join our 6th form from other schools to take advantage of the wide range of advanced level courses which we offer. A superb programme of cultural and extra curricular provision is in place for our older students. This includes an afternoon of ‘recreation’ once a week, where students can take part in activities of their choice including learning a new language or sporting events competing against other schools and colleges.

Opportunities are created to develop our pupils’ independence as learners. Involvement of pupils in their learning ensures engagement and interaction. Creative use of information technology for demonstration, exemplification and reinforcement motivates children. All teaching rooms are well equipped for this.

‘a clear focus on learning’

‘all the elements of the English Baccalaureate’The Heathland School has always maintained a curriculum for students which reflects academic rigour. Students with more practical learning styles have their needs met by appropriate courses and learning activities. We believe that everyone has the right to achieve and receive accreditation for their achievement at every level.

The school is a harmonious community characterised by mutual respect. Our traditional values are welcomed by parents and always noted by visitors to the school who regularly comment on our charming and well mannered students.

‘respect for staff, courtesy and good manners’

‘young people are educated in a calm, happy and orderly climate’Our pupils understand that they need to behave in an orderly and business like fashion. They respect their learning environment and appreciate the provision of resources that is made for them.

“Another example of The Heathland’s very special students”

Students gain a huge amount from their involvement in the arts at The Heathland School. Our yearly Production and Gala Concert are the high points with other showcases of dance and drama through the year.

Recitals by individuals and groups are featured regularly in our morning assemblies as a stimulating start to the day.

Trips and workshops are frequent events and we have strong links with a range of professional practitioners and arts organisations.

‘valuing the Arts and Humanities’

‘a remarkable range of enrichment activities’ Pupils often comment that they love coming to school for the wide range of clubs, totalling over 150, that they can join.

In addition to in school clubs, students take part in trips within Britain and further abroad. They benefit from

participation in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and are motivated by guests to

school from all fields of sport and the arts. Our students relish

these opportunities.

‘a lively and energetic curriculum’The School’s facilities are excellent and include a well equipped Sports Hall, a gymnasium, a floodlit Astroturf, six tennis courts, six netball courts, an all-weather cricket wicket, outdoor cricket nets and a number of grass pitches. There has also been a climbing wall placed in the Sports Hall. There is a Fitness Studio with fixed and ‘free’ weights, aerobic machines, rowers, jogger and steppers as well as eight outside basketball rings. This enables the PE department to provide a lively and energetic curriculum in KS3, 4 and 5 to challenge students so they can progress to the best of their ability.

The Heathland School is rightly proud of its diverse cultural and ethnic mix and the vibrant community which this has created in school. Celebration of all festivals is a priority for the school. Understanding of each other is what makes The Heathland School such a special place to be. Links with our local community are vital and the school works closely with parents, other schools and organisations.

‘linked into the community’

Eastern Evening is our famous celebration of all things Eastern and artistic. A fantastic festival of our students’ and community’s cultural heritage, this evening is one the students all want to be part of and the singing, dancing and playing takes your breath away.

‘Eastern Evening’

‘talented and committed staff’Recruitment of the highest quality teaching and support staff is vital to our success and Senior Leaders work tirelessly to ensure that the best of our profession are serving the students we have. Staff demonstrate their commitment year on year by the extra mile to which they will go to ensure successful outcomes and love of learning.

With a healthy and active School Council, students are able to have their voices heard. Year Councils feed into the School Council Constitution meeting which poses questions and requests to the School Senior Leaders. Tangible evidence of their input can be seen in the dining hall and around the school.Conferences on leading items of learning in lessons have strengthened the pupils’ participation.

‘students are proud of their school and enjoy their education’

Our motto underpins the ethos of the school encouraging the personal development and achievement of all young Heathlanders.
