Section B: Running Our Business

1. Here is a summary of what we did to set up and run our business. We used our market research todetermine our business model. it consisted of a 15 question survey. We had the survey completed by 30 people. This group of participants was made up of teachers, individual people, businesses, local and international. Due to the fact that our school is close to a border, we are able to transport goods across the border if necessary, however, most of the surveys were conducted within the immediate school vicinity. We used a questionnaire as it is more practical than an interview. Adults and business owners are not always comfortable talking to children or do not always have the time to help with school projects. A few times, we had to explain what our purpose was and then leave the questionnaires to be completed and collected later. The questionnaires allowed us to remain focused on the most important questions and to help us remember what we had to ask. All business club participants took forms home and we asked different kinds of people to answer our questionnaire. This helped us decide what products would sell better than others and it also helped us in deciding who our target market would be.

The survey also gave us the opportunity to market our new business in a word-of-mouth manner and make the community aware of what we are trying to do. At the end of the survey, we asked our customers for any suggestions and we got some really valuable input.

Due to the levels of poverty and poor economy in Swaziland, the majority of respondents indicated that they did not buy Spa/bath products as gifts for other people. Our initial idea was to make gift packages containing Spa/bath products. Through our market research, we have altered our plan and will fill our glass bottles with affordable products to enable the average household to purchase them on a Each group’s duties are as follows:

1. Marketing team: Handing out of flyers, putting posters up, Implementing & updating Facebook page, sales and delivery. Assisting with obtaining start up capital.

2. Design team: Designing and printing of posters & labels, decorating and finishing off filled bottles/jars.

3. Production team 1: Are responsible for making natural spa treatments & filling the glass bottles/jars

4. Production team 2: Are responsible for making sauces, food condiments & pickles and filling the glass bottles/jars

5. Financial & procurement team: Obtaining start-up capital and managing the accounting system. Issue financial statement for the business.

Management team: Leaders to oversee their team and offer assistance and motivate their teamEach team member was responsible to sell products and this helped in minimising advertising costs and time. However, it did restrict our sales as students have limited resources and some worked harder than others.

monthly basis. According to out survey 1/3 of the respondents said that they do not purchase pickled

vegetables very often however all respondents indicated that they purchased sauces to add to their food – especially tomato sauce and chilli sauce.

2/3 of respondents said that they would be interested in purchasing naturally made products. We used Whatsapp & flyers to advertise our products.

The following steps were followed to get started:Step 1: Market research to help decide on which will be our productsStep 2: Organised donationsStep 3: Collect bottles & design initial productsStep 4: Identified customers

2. Our business team structure – Here are the names and positions of the business team members with a reference if they are teachers/students and a diagram of our business team structure (when possible).

Our business has 20 members whom have been divided into six teams. However, apart from each teams specified duties, members may support each other and assist whenever assistance may be necessary. Our group is divided into the following teams: Marketing team, design team, two production teams with 2 production leaders, financial and procurement team & a management team which is made up of one member from each group.

Section C: Use of Profits

3. Here is an explanation of how we decided what we plan to spend our profits on:

Due to our profits being very low this year, we will carry the amount over to use as start up capital for next years business

Section D: Our Achievements, Challenges and Solutions

4. These were the 3 biggest challenges we faced when planning/setting up/running our business and the solutions we came up with to overcome them:

a. Challenge #1:Products getting stale and lacking preservative strategies.Solution: a) Used the school refrigerator to store our products and adding preservatives which lengthened the product shelf life.

a. Challenge #2: Convincing people to purchase our products.Solution: Advertising and educating people about the health benefits of our products. Giving discounts to customers who purchase in large quantities.

a. Challenge #3: Transportation of products and materials.Solution: Our school manager offered us free transport.

3. These are the 3 most important things we learned:

Bookkeeping and Advertising. Compiling financial books and balancing them. Overcoming challenges we faced in bringing our products to people.

Making Products and Bottling them. Coming up with various recipes and knowing the importance of following instructions to make our

products.

b. Preserving our products.1. Identifying the need to preserve our products for them to stay long before getting stale.

Section E: Sustainability & Business Development

4. Our business has a positive impact on the environment and our community because:a) Reusing bottles reduces the materials that are send to the landfills thus reducing land pollution.b) Reusing bottles helps in the reduction in pollution when making new bottles. This reduces

greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere.c) It encourages people to start their own product making businesses.d) Encourages people to become entrepreneurs.

5. Our school business has the potential to carry on running sustainably next year and have a positive impact on the local environment and our community. This is our three point action plan of how we will keep it running:

Expanding the business i.e making other products which we did not make this year. Identifying what our customers need and try to satisfy them. Search for markets which are out of our coverage area and getting orders from supermarkets

and restaurants.

Appendix Section: Students in ActionPlease find in this space some evidence that clearly shows our involvement as students in the setting up of our business. You will find 3-5 photos (or if that’s not possible, we will share quotes from participating students).

This is how we raised the money needed to start our business:We did not have to raise any money as our first batch of our product ingredients were donated by parents and the school and the bottles we used were collected as part of our recycling project. The profits that we received from our first sales were used to buy more ingredients. Had we had more time, we would have gradually been able to by larger quantities of ingredients and make more profit.

Additional comments about our finances:Due to our term dates, holidays and year end exams, we only had 3 weeks for sales. We hope to improve this next year as we are now more aware of what is required and can plan better in 2018.
