Today our students are celebrating their Positive Behaviour for Learning efforts during Term 1 with a ‘fun activities’ day including PJ’s and movies, hot cross bun making, fort making, Easter crafts, singing and a shared healthy food morning tea for the middle syndicate.

If you are still to pay Term 1 Activities, it would be really appreciated if this could be paid before Term 2 begins. The activities pay for trips like EOTC week and presenters to the school, swimming etc. If you have registered for Netball, please pay no later than the 29th April 2019.

Well done to the three Floorball teams that have been competing in the Wednesday night competition this term. Thank you to Myracle Tala, Angela Porter, Subajing Anthonimuthu and Jo Morrison for coaching/managing. Hutt Valley Floorball will be running skills and drills sessions in Term 2 (no league in Term 2). Please email [email protected] if your child is interested in participating.

by Paige, Kenny and Myracle Week 8 EOTC for the middle syndicate.

This is what the students had to say about their week of EOTC. My favourite day was the camp day. I liked it because there were lots of tents and they were all different. I liked moving my tents around and playing with my friends in them. Lots of other people came to visit my tent and it felt like I had my own house and people came to see me. Scarlett - Rm 1

Our favourite part was getting lost with my groups. I also liked going over the swing bridge and we enjoyed looking down the dark hold, it looked very deep and scary. We enjoyed seeing all the birds. Ingo and Nikau - Room 1

I liked building my tent and playing with my friends. I got to draw my camp booklet and it was really fun. Having morning tea in my tent was fun, I enjoyed it a lot. My favourite bit was playing with my friends. By: Isabella - Room 0

I liked seeing all of the tuataras and birds. The weta’s looked very big. I enjoyed the movie about saving nature. I thought this trip was really fun. Mason - Room 0

My favourite part of the water fight was when the fire fighter sprayed us with water. It was funny when most of the kids were running away from the water. It was so much fun and thank you to the firemen. Jehme - Room 2

My favourite part about EOTC was Zealandia. I liked seeing the birds, insects and bridges. I liked all of those things because they were amazing. Baris - Room 2

My favourite day was Te Whiti park on Tuesday. We did a lot of games there and my favourite one was rounders with Mrs Hey. But it started raining on the way there. Catherine - Room 3/4 My favourite day of E.O.T.C week was when we went to Zealandia. We saw lots of birds and there was a feeding station. I enjoyed looking at the tuataras and I enjoyed going on the amazing walk. By: TJ - Room 3/4 My favourite day was the water fight because I liked getting squirted by the fireman and I liked squirting other people because it was funny. It was funny when Mr Leaming chucked water at us. By: Israel - Room 3/4

Measuring feijoas and baking a feijoa loaf in Room 8

Thank you Hera for helping us bake this delicious feijoa cake and for donating the feijoas

Today every child in the Middle Syndicate was lucky to receive a lunchbox and a healthy morning tea provided by the ‘Food for Thought’ programme. In Room 3/4 we had a sandwich making station with all kinds of fillings! Tuna, tomato, spinach, cheese and marmite just to name a few. Our snacks included popcorn, rice crackers, feijoas, yoghurt, carrot sticks, grapes and apples! We’ve had a real feast!

Our Lady of the Rosary School Board of Trustee Elections We have Board Elections coming up this year and I encourage you to consider standing. It is a very important governance position at the school where we oversee the finances, property and most importantly student achievement. We help set the leadership vision and strategic direction of the school and we need as many different voices on there as possible so we can ensure we are representing as many people as possible. You can find out more information here: https://www.trustee-election.co.nz/becoming-a-trustee/ and here https://www.nzsta.org.nz/advice-and-support/information-for-parents/.

You can find out: • What is a school board of trustees • What do trustees do • What skills do trustees need • Who can become a trustee • How do I become a trustee • Who is on a board of trustees • How is a board elected • What help do school trustees get • How does the board of trustees work At our school we need five parent representatives and we also have four proprietor’s representative openings (representing the Cardinal), as well as the Principal and staff representative. We have two meetings a term for approximately two hours each and there is a little bit of reading to do before a meeting. You could also talk to any of the current Trustees you see around the school about the role. The Parent representatives are: Shanan Marsden, Helen Greaney, Marlene Gillies, Eti Moananu and Natasha Watson (current Board chair). The current proprietor representatives are: Camille Plimmer, Rebecca Feerick and Leanne England. The current staff representative is Caro de Beer. I urge you all to think about standing, it has been a really worthwhile experience for myself and I have learnt a lot and appreciate having such a pivotal role in making a positive difference for our children. If you choose not to stand, then I urge you to vote, it is really important we are representative of you.

On Monday evening we had our last BOT meeting for the term. Student wellbeing is very important at Our Lady of the Rosary School and we have been part of the PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) initiative since 2015. This programme supports New Zealand schools to build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The initiative is about reflecting and changing the environment, systems and practices we have in place to support our students to make positive behaviour and learning choices for their wellbeing. We have a school-wide classroom and playground system to support PB4L, appropriate for the different year levels with our school virtues at the centre. We have a range of systems to affirm our students positively such as Gold cards and academic awards. We also have a range of systems to support students to inform adults of any concerns they may have, such as classroom mailboxes, early reporting to duty teachers, circle time, and ‘Smart Start’. As part of our commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of our children we undertake a range of measures to ensure we keep our finger on the pulse and can address any issues as they arise. This includes a Wellbeing and Bullying survey that we have been asking our students to complete (from years 3 to 8) over the last 4 years. From the recent surveys we identified areas for us to address as a school. This year of particular interest cyber bullying was an identified concern. We ask that you review unsupervised access to the internet your child may have, and if you do identify any issues then these resources may be of interest: https://www.bullyingfree.nz/parents-and-whanau/ and https://www.netsafe.org.nz/online-bullying/.

If any concerns do arise for your child that we may not be aware of, we encourage you to talk to your child’s classroom teacher as the first port of call. As a new term is about to begin, if your child makes their own way to school or home we suggest it may be timely to have a discussion and check in with your child to ensure your child feels safe. The Board hopes you all have a safe and happy holiday break and looks forward to an exciting term two. God Bless, Natasha Watson, BOT Chairperson
