BURSARIES

ABORIGINAL STUDENT BURSARY This award was established in 2015 by Joan McKay in an effort to support aboriginal students in School District 57.

Number of Awards: 3

Amount of Each Award: $1,000.00

Eligibility: Must be a self-identified aboriginal student.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

ALLNORTH CONSULTANTS LIMITED BURSARY Allnorth Consultants Limited is a multidisciplinary engineering and technical services consulting company. We are proud to be in Prince George and actively support this community. Our bursaries are offered to assist students from Prince George in pursuing a post secondary education in Engineering or Forestry.

Number of Awards: 2

Amount of Each Award: $250.00

Eligibility: Open to graduating Grade 12 students from a Secondary School within Prince George (School District 57) planning to attend Post Secondary studies in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Forestry or Forest Technology.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need. Award must be claimed within one year after high school graduation.

Selection Process: Selected by the District Awards Committee

BEN GUILLIAMSE MEMORIAL BURSARY This award was established by the Kiwanis Club of Prince George to honour one of their members, Ben Guilliamse. This award will go to a student who has participated in Science Fairs within School District No. 57 and want to pursue a career in the Sciences.

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $500.00

Eligibility: Open to all students in School District No. 57 who want to pursue a career in the Sciences

Criteria: Demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement and financial need

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: A letter of reference or certificate outlining active involvement in a school Science Fair.

BUCKHORN ELEMENTARY P.A.C. BURSARY This award is given to a graduating student who attended Buckhorn Elementary School, who intends to pursue a post-secondary education at any recognized educational institution (including Trade School).

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $500.00

Eligibility: Open to students who completed Grade 7 at Buckhorn Elementary and attended Buckhorn Elementary for at least 3 consecutive years including Grade 7.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and is in financial need. Demonstrated volunteer work, participated within the community and/or school events; show leadership qualities with a willingness to help others. Applicants must indicate current career goals.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: A letter of reference outlining volunteer work, community/school participation, leadership etc. must accompany application.

This Award is paid directly by the donor, once the recipient has begun Full Time Post Secondary.

CENTRAL BUILDERS’ HOME BUILDING CENTRE BURSARY Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $250.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attend school in the City of Prince George.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

CHELSEY FIDDLER MEMORIAL BURSARY This award established by the family to honour the memory of Chelsey Fiddler. Chelsey was a student at College Heights Secondary, who brought happiness and laughter to those around her. Her kindness and glowing personality impacted those that knew her.

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $1000.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attend a Secondary School in School District 57, who knew Chelsey

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic standing and financial need.

Selection Process: Selected by the Donor

Special Conditions: A one page letter regarding how Chelsey brought happiness to your life is required.

COLIN McINTOSH MEMORIAL BURSARY This bursary was established in 2016 in memory, and to honor Colin McIntosh, a former long-term General Manager of Spruce Credit Union. The Colin McIntosh Memorial Bursary is offered, on a rotating basis, to students graduating from secondary schools within the City of Prince George.

Number of Awards: 1

Amount of Each Award: $750.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attend school within the City of Prince George.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement, financial need, and ability to achieve educational goals. Demonstrated leadership or involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: Awards are to be distributed as follows: June 2019 – Prince George Secondary School

A letter of reference outlining leadership or involvement in community must accompany application.

Recipients do not have to be members or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union; however, when two students have equal qualifications for the award, preference will be given to a student who is a member or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union.

CORPORAL DARREN JAMES FITZPATRICK MEMORIAL BURSARY Corporal Darren James Fitzpatrick was born in Burnaby, raised in Prince George and graduated from Kelly Road Secondary. Darren was the 141st military casualty of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. He will forever be remembered as the proud Canadian and courageous leader he was. This award was established as a tribute to the brave service of our military troops in the defense of our country. This award is available to a student from School District 57 pursuing a career in the Canadian Forces as preference. If there are no students entering the Canadian Forces this award will be available to a student pursuing a career in the RCMP or as a Fire Fighter.

Number of Awards: 2

Amount of Each Award: $1,000.00

Eligibility: Preference will be given to a student from Kelly Road Secondary meeting the criteria. If there are no students from KRSS then the award is available to any student within School District No. 57 meeting the criteria.

Criteria: Demonstrated satisfactory academic achievement and financial need.

Selection Process: Selected by the District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: Award will be given upon confirmation of acceptance from the Canadian Forces, RCMP or upon proof of full time enrollment related to becoming a Fire Fighter.

CRUISIN’ CLASSICS CAR CLUB OF PRINCE GEORGE BURSARY The Cruisin’ Classics Car Club of Prince George established an annual bursary in 1987. Applicant must enroll in an approved post-secondary education program related to the automotive industry.

FREDA ERRICSON MEMORIAL NURSING BURSARY This award was established in 2001 by family, and friends to honour the memory of Freda Erricson. Freda was a dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse and Nursing Unit Clerk at the Prince George Regional Hospital for over 35 years. Her conscientious and compassionate nature endeared her to the many patients, co-workers, friends and family. It is hoped that this bursary will be awarded to someone who is determined to put kindness back into the nursing profession.

Jan emigrated from Sweden in 1957 to Vancouver. He pursued his education there and became a chartered accountant. This is his way to pay back to his new country for the opportunities it offered him.

KARL ANDERSON FOUNDATION BURSARY Karl Anderson left Denmark at an early age as a member of the Danish Navy and made his way to Canada, arriving in the rapidly growing community of South Fort George in 1913. He opened a newsstand opposite the sternwheeler landing in South Fort George. In 1914 Karl moved his store to a permanent building on George Street in the new town site of Prince George. Karl was a member of the Rotary Club of Prince George as well as the Supreme Lodge of the Danish Brotherhood in America. This award is given to male students who intend to pursue a university education.

SHAMARLEN LUCILLE MELVILLE MEMORIAL BURSARY This award was established in 1991 in memory of Shamarlen Lucille Melville, a former employee of School District No. 57 who worked in Mackenzie, BC. She was a graduate of the Grace Maternity Hospital Nursing Program in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was a very warm, friendly, outgoing person who cared about people. A.L. FORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This annual scholarship was established in 1995 by Isabel Ford as a memorial for her late husband, A.L. Ford. A.L. Ford was a communications pioneer in Prince George, serving 48 years with CN Telegraph. From the arrival of telegraph services to Prince George to the evolving telecommunications services of the 1970’s, A.L. Ford worked in areas that we now call “information technology”.

BEV HOSKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This awards was established by family and friends of Bev Hosker. Born in Fort St. John, Bev was a member of the first ever female RCMP troop. She went on to serve 24 years with the RCMP throughout British Columbia. Bev was in integral member of the District Parent Advisory Councils in both Quesnel and Prince George, and a tireless advocate for the rights of students and parents. She was a particularly strong believer in the need to increase the numbers of young women pursuing studies in math and science. This award will go to someone who embodies Bev’s commitment to community and school and plans to pursue further studies in a mathematics related field.

BRYAN JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Bryan Johnson, a Prince George businessman. He was a very warm, friendly person with a tremendous zest for life. The purpose of this scholarship is to acknowledge students who are self-motivated and who pursue excellence in their endeavors. Bryan’s untimely death occurred in an avalanche while skiing on Mount Rider, February 4, 1995. He is sadly missed by his wife, family and friends.

Gairett was a student at D.P. Todd Secondary School. He graduated in 2006 and passed away in 2007. After his retirement, John continued his interest and support of public education through the Education Heritage Committee of the Prince George Retired Teachers' Association and the Springboard to Success Scholarship Committee partnership between the school district and the Prince George Community Foundation. John was a positive man who looked for the best in everyone he met and everything he did. His family and friends established this award in his memory in 2012.

KATHI HUGHES BURSARY This award was established in 2004 by the staff at the Transitional Alternative Program – Secondary (TAPS) to honour the work of Kathi Hughes, an educator in SD No. 57 who contributed to the development of SD No. 57 Alternative Education services and programs. From 2004 – 2019, the Award was given to a graduating student from TAPS who exhibited similar characteristics as Kathi: leadership, innovation, positive energy, humour, willingness to help others, volunteerism and perseverance. As of 2019-2020, the Award is available for any secondary-aged student from the Centre for Learning Alternatives who meets the criteria. This Award is intended to provide financial assistance to a secondary student graduating from a Center for Learning Alternatives (CLA) program/service who has successfully completed his/her personal goals and who plans to continue his/her education at any post-secondary institute.

JOHN IRELAND MEMORIAL BURSARY This bursary has been established to honour the memory of John Ireland who was a long time math instructor with School District No. 57.

Eligibility: Open to students who are currently attending Kelly Road Secondary School. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a senior math class who have struggled with math and have worked hard to bring up their grades.

Applicants are expected to enroll in a post-secondary training or educational program in the fall of the year in which the award is granted. Amount of Each Award: $1000.00

Eligibility: Open to students who attend Mackenzie Secondary School.

Criteria: Students must be proceeding to further education at a recognized college, university, or technical/vocational school. This award is based on scholastic achievement. Students must have attended Mackenzie Secondary School for at least grades 11 and 12 and have a GPA no lower than 3.5, Canadian Citizenship, as well as proof of acceptance, and registration at a recognized post-secondary institution must be given. This scholarship must be committed by the upcoming September. An alternate who can meet the criteria may be substituted in the event that the winner is unable to use this award. In the event of a tie, the scholarship committee will select the deserving student based on the academic record of the previous two years.
