We had a stroll up The Mall towards Buckingham Palace where we took some photos and watched a parade to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. The parade consisted of a 41 gun salute, a marching band and a procession of horses. It was a lovely surprise and very colourful. After that we went to Cardinal Place for some lunch. We then visited the Invisible Superhero Expedition where we learned all about Civil Engineering and future advanced designs by engineers. One of our year 7 students spent the whole time crawling around with an advanced VR headset on! Following on, we had a brief tour of the building and then walked to the Houses of Parliament. We arrived at the education centre and went through an airport style security system and received tour passes. We then followed our very informative tour guide into the main parliament building. We stood in Central Lobby and looked left and right. On the left, there was a corridor that led to the House of Commons and the corridor on the right led to the House of Lords. We started our tour by observing a debate from the gallery of the House of Lords. Luckily, we were able to go into the House of Commons (once it had adjourned) where our tour guide explained what everything signifies in the room and what happens in there on a daily basis. We also had a chance to ask questions about the room. We then walked back to the education centre where we completed an interactive workshop on representation and voting. It was very interesting to see what it’s actually like to politically vote. Following on from our workshop, our local MP Mr Huw Merriman, paid us a visit. He gave us a chance to have a Q&A session and to take some photos. Overall the day was very informative. We got an insight into being a politician in the Houses of Parliament and not forgetting the buzz of being in our capital city. Aidan, 9S12 It was a truly interesting day. LGBTQFebruary is LGBTQ History month and Claverham students have been marking this by wearing rainbow laces in their PE trainers. 250 pupils purchased rainbow laces as a way of showing support for members of the LGBTQ community. The whole College was decorated with rainbow posters on every classroom door, featuring logos that were subject specific.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and the 30th anniversary of the launch of Stonewall in the UK. Pupils have covered issues and discussed the topic in PHSE and morning registration times. The laces were purchased through Stonewall and all monies will continue to support their great work. Thank you to all who supported this.

Mr Lochan-Grimer

TaekwondoEvie Eason-Warner a year 10 pupil and Isobel Eason-Warner (a former pupil), were both selected along with 11 other competitors to represent the All England Taekwondo Association at the Dutch Open Championships in Eindhoven on 26th January. This is one of the toughest competitions and consisted of 750 competitors from over 20 different countries.

Evie passed her black belt grading last year and this was her first international competition since her grading. For the first event – Patterns – there were over 55 competitors in the group. Evie and Izzy were in the same pool for this but managed to avoid meeting. Both girls did really well to get through 3 rounds and both unfortunately went out in the 4th round finishing joint 9th overall.

In the sparring events the competition was extremely tough with both girls facing International champions in their respective groups. Again they both got to the same stage of the semi-finals and the chance to fight for a medal. Evie was beaten by the eventual Gold medal winner in her group and finished 4th overall! Isobel managed one step further and secured the bronze medal in her group . (Evie fights in the -45kg and Isobel in the -55kg weight divisions).

Isobel is representing England this year at the World Championships in Germany at the end of April, she has also been selected by the England coaches to lead the Junior girls team and be the Junior Girls Team Captain.

Evie is hoping to try out for the England Team in time to compete for the European Championships at the end of this year.

Mrs Eason-Warner

Cross CountryOn January 16th I took our elite cross country runners, from years 8 to 10, to the Sussex Cross Country Championships at Waterhall in Brighton.

The weather was very unpleasant, extremely cold, very windy and torrential rain. The course was also very challenging with a particularly tough up hill section through some woods. The boys and girls all competed extremely well and looked at home amongst the best runners in the county.

The Junior Girls team consisted of Maddie, Nancy, Lucy and Beth. The Junior Boys team was made up of Will, Ryan, Alfie and Rufus. The Intermediate Girls were Andie and Florence.

Our best placed finishers were Will for the boys in 28th place and Nancy for the girls in 27th place, however, I would like to congratulate all ten runners for their outstanding effort and achievements.

Year 9 Careers Fair Event 23rd January 2019

The annual Claverham Careers Event took place on 23rd January. This event was very well supported by a number of local, national and international businesses, some of whom have been present for several years, as well as a few welcome additions. It was good to see so many ex-Claverham students who came to represent their businesses/employers and we would like to thank everyone who gave up their time to make this event possible.

The Year 9 students had the opportunity to engage with the professionals and ask relevant questions to help them decide on possible future career paths, particularly important as the students prepare to choose their GCSE options.

The enthusiasm of the students created a wonderful buzz in the room and it was great to see so many of them speaking to as many professionals as they could, in a short space of time. Our students were described as engaged, polite and asking the right questions. Well done Year 9 for generating such a positive feedback from the employers. Some of the feedback we received about the event and students is below:

‘I was amazed by how mature, proactive and confident your students were, especially even at year 9! I go to several schools in the South East and your students definitely stand out as some of the best.’

‘...I wanted to tell you how impressed we are with the students at Claverham! We go to many schools and do several careers fairs annually and I have to say, Claverham has by far been the most impressive.....

Your students were very engaging, polite, asked lots of questions and had a genuine interest in what we were saying, the event was extremely well organised and we

would welcome the opportunity to participate or help in any way, going forward.’

‘It was great to meet so many well behaved and mature young people. They asked some great questions and really seemed to make the most of the event!’

Thank you to the parents who came along to support their children at this event. We hope you found it valuable. If you have any feedback you would like to give us, please contact the careers team on [email protected]

Once again we would also like to thank each and every one of the professionals who attended and their employers for giving them the time to do so: 3D Recruit, ASK Programme , AXA PPP , Battle Sports Centre, British Army, Claverham Day Nursery , East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, General Dynamics UK , Heringtons Solicitors, JTL Training , Kurt J Lesker, MJS Media, Oaten Architects, Powdermills Hotel , Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Senlac Veterinary Services, South East Coast Ambulance Services, Sussex Police, Watsons Associates and Westridge Construction Ltd.

A big ‘THANK YOU’ also goes to the local education providers who come every year to support this event: Bexhill College, DV8, East Sussex College, Heathfield College, Plumpton College and University of Sussex.

Exam Revision / Yr. 11 Silent StudyAs we move towards the examination season, we are putting in place support and resources to fully prepare students for their examinations, in addition to the large range of interventions we have been implementing since September.

It is important that students prepare effectively in order to maximise their achievement.

One way that can help them is Silent Study:

NSPCCWe received a thank you letter from the NSPCC recently:

“We’re delighted that Claverham Community College has chosen to fundraise the NSPCC this term and would like to thank you and everyone at your school for your support. By raising the wonderful sum of £300, you’ve also made sure that we can be there to help even more children who desperately need us.

As a supporter of our work, you already know we’re here for children. You know that abuse ruins childhood, but it can be prevented.

That’s why we’re here. That’s what drives all our work, and that’s why - as long as there’s abuse - we will fight for every childhood.

We help children rebuild their lives and we find ways to prevent abuse from ruining any more. So when a child needs a helping hand, we’ll be there.

When parents are finding it tough, we’ll help them. When laws need to change, or governments need to do more, we won’t give up until things improve.

And they will improve, because we can all play a part in the fight for every childhood. Big or small - through supporting our work, or simply believing, respecting and listening to children - there’s something each of us can do to make things better for children.

Your fundraising will really make a difference.

The simple truth is our work wouldn’t be possible without the kindness and generosity of supporters like you and everyone at your school. The money you have raised will make a real difference to the lives of children across the UK and Channel Islands.

Together we can help shape a society where abuse doesn’t go unchallenged, where children are empowered to seek out help, and where every call for support can be answered.”

Surviving ChristmasWe received a thank you letter from Surviving Christmas too:

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the amazing donation of £600.00 to Surviving Christmas.

This enabled us to provide a Christmas meal on Christmas Day and Boxing Day together with entertainment, medical attention, showers, haircuts, new clothes and hampers to those in need in the Rother and Hastings Districts.

Your support is greatly appreciated.”

East Sussex Youth CabinetCongratulations to Elsa who has been voted on to the East Sussex Youth Cabinet.

Thank you to all who took the trouble to put themselves forward and to those who voted, gaining us a Schools Gold Democracy Award.

Sportshall Athletics CompetitionOn Tuesday 22nd January a team of year 7 girls and boys went to St Leonards Academy to take part in the Sportshall Athletics competition. This involved competing against several other schools in events including sprinting, shot put and standing long jump. The teams both did well with the boys finishing 3rd and the girls in 5th place.

Well done!

Pestalozzi Village Cake SaleA very passionate and motivated member of 8C48 took responsibility for organising and running a cake sale on 7th February in aid of Pestalozzi Village. Ellie and friends designed promotional posters and encouraged friends to bake cakes and help run the stall. Rose even baked gluten free brownies. A whopping £98.63 was raised.

Thanks to Miss Kent and Mr Butcher for their support in manning the crowds.

Ms Comfort

Lost PropertyWe have a growing amount of coats in lost property which must be missed in this cold weather! To avoid this happening, please can you ensure that your child’s items, particularly coats, jackets and PE kit are clearly named so that they can be returned to them, if found.

You are welcome to arrange a time to come in and look through the lost property by contacting reception. However, after the half term break, the items remaining will be disposed of.

Music NewsAlice Younger passed her grade 8 violin with Distinction just before Christmas. A fantastic achievement.

Choir - open to all years - rehearses Friday lunchtimes.

Newly formed boys’ singing group for year 7 boys meets on a Wednesday at lunchtime.

Instrumentalists - I am looking to get an orchestra / similar group up and running again after half term - see Mrs Graham for details.

Budding songwriters - Mr Di Girolamo is running a club on Thursday lunchtimes to help you develop your ideas.

Jam club is open to all guitarists / bassists / drummers / vocalists - every Tuesday lunchtime.

It would be lovely to see some new members at these clubs - bring your lunch!
