The future of India lies in its villages. If the village perishes India will perish too. India will be no more India.

• Education in India – Fact Sheet

India has the largest number of illiterate adults in the world. - The Education For All-Global Monitoring Report

Less than half of grade 5 children could read a text designed for grade 2 students.

Gender Gap is a major issue. Literacy rates are 21% lower for females than for males.

Many government schools exist on paper only as the proposed buildings are either partially or fully ruined.

Page 5: School Chalo!

In some villages, people don’t have school nearby. They have to walk many kilometers to reach a primary school.

Many in the country side feel that the things they learned at school are not relevant to their lives.

Many government schools have no classroom furniture, toilets, clean drinking water or playground.

In several cases, the schools are confined to one room only. Hence the children are forced to study under trees or in the open even in the rainy season.

Basic arithmetic results were equally poor. Only 60% of grade 5 pupils could do a grade 2 addition or sum.

Many teachers themselves are badly educated or unqualified.

…Every society that values social justice and is anxious to improve the lot of the common man and cultivate all available talent must ensure progressive equality of opportunity to all sections of the population. This is the only guarantee for the building up of an egalitarian and human society in which the exploitation of the weak will be minimized.

- The Education Commission, GOI, 1966
