SRI & SAM Training ModuleWelcome to Enterprise Training for Scholastic Reading Inventory, or SRI. This training is designed for teachers who will use SRI in their classrooms to effectively place students within Scholastic programs. SRI is powered by a management system called the Scholastic Achievement Manager, or SAM. Today you’ll learn not only how to use SAM to enroll students in SRI, but also how to give the SRI test, interpret your students’ scores, and both measure and manage your students’progress.

Viewing the SRI & SAM Training ModuleOnce you’ve downloaded the presentation, there are several ways in which you can view it. Double-click the presentation to open it in Microsoft PowerPoint.

All About SAMSigning In

1. Enter your Username and Password.

2. Click Sign In.

All About SAM: Signing InTo sign in to SAM, find the square icon on your teacher computer’s desktop that has a cute little dog’s face on it (his name is SAM). Double- click this icon. To enter SAM, you will need to have a username and a password. This has been set up for you during installation of the Enterprise Edition. When the login screen appears, type:

Your username: your first initial and last name with no space between.Your password: Your first and last initial.

If you are the only person to use your teacher computer on a regular basis, you can speed up the sign-up process by clicking the check box and selecting Remember my Username, Password, and Settings. I should note that If you check this box, you can access SAM more easily; however, this may mean that others may have easy access to the data you stored in SAM.

Getting Around SAMThe Home Page

Getting Around SAM: The Home PageThis is the SAM Home Page. There are three ways to navigate SAM from the Home Page: the Quick Links, the Home Page buttons, and the SmartBar.

You can find the Quick Links in the upper-right hand corner of any screen in SAM. Click these links to quickly return to the Home Page, view your Profile, exit SAM, and get help. [CLICK]

Another way to navigate SAM is to use the Home Page Buttons. Click these buttons (or the tabs on the top of any screen) to access different information:

• Roster provides detailed information about your students’ performance in Scholastic programs.• Reports provides data about your students’ performance in Scholastic programs.• Resources has printables for your students and classrooms, and for professional development purposes.• Book Expert has a searchable database of book titles and quizzes to support your curriculum needs.

The third and most important way to navigate SAM is by using the SmartBar, which is the core of SAM navigation. It appears as the left- hand column on every SAM screen and is the quickest route to displaying information about schools and classes using Scholastic programs. [CLICK]

Getting Around SAMUsing the SmartBar

1. Single-click either the Classes, Groups, or Students tab to reveal enrollments.

2. Double-click any name on the SmartBar to select it.

Getting Around SAM: Using the SmartBarThe main tool that you use to navigate SAM is called the SmartBar. You can see it along the left side of any screen.

The SmartBar gets its “smarts” from the way it quickly sorts profile and reports information. The choices you will have are based on the level of permissions you have to SAM. For teachers, this includes Student Settings, Class/Group Settings, and your personal Teacher Setting. [CLICK]

The SmartBar works using a “top-down” system. This means that all of the information on the SmartBar is related and that the information contained in the tabbed lists beneath are dependent on the tabs above them. Follow the steps on screen to access student and class information.

1. Single-click either the Classes, Groups, or Students tab to reveal enrollments. 2. Double-click any name on the SmartBar to select it.

Once you have made your selection, use the tabs along the top of the main display to view profile or reports information for the student, class or group you havechosen.

Familiarize yourself with the SmartBar’s “top-down” system for each of your students and classes.

For each selection you make on the SmartBar, make sure to locate the program information on the Roster screen.

2. Use the check boxes to enroll students in SRI.

Getting Around SAM: Enrolling Classes in ProgramsFollow the steps on-screen to practice enrolling your students in SRI:

1. Click the Manage Enrollment link under Manage Roster on the right of the Class Profile screen.

profile screen.

If you would like to enroll all of the students in a program at once, just click the check box beneath the program name in the header of the Manage Enrollmentwindow. Your class’ enrollment status will appear in the Usage Summary on your class’ Profile screen.

SAM Reports Overview

SAM Reports OverviewReports provide detailed information about your students’ progress in a variety of different reading areas and skills, and contain information on students’ status in the programs. You can also use them to communicate with parents. Reports help you: • Monitor student progress• Check software usage• Plan instruction• Diagnose student needs

When your students work in Scholastic programs like SRI, SAM automatically saves the results of their work, then organizes it into a variety of different reports that you can generate for each of the Scholastic programs. We will get into the details of how you can use reports to manage SRI data a little later in the training.

You can access reports by clicking the blue Reports button on the Home Page, or by clicking the blue Reports tab along the top of any screen in SAM.

Running ReportsUsing the Reports Index

Running Reports: Using the Reports IndexThere are six different types of reports that can run in SAM: Progress Monitoring, Diagnostic Reports (only available in READ 180 reporting), Instructional Planning, Alerts and Acknowledgements, School-to-Home, and Management.

The Reports Index lists a selection of recommended reports based on your SmartBar selection. The Reports Index is organized by the Scholastic programs, report types, and dates of reports last run. [CLICK] Clicking the blue Reports tab from any screen in SAM will open the reports index. (If you are on the Home Page, click the blue Reports Button.)

Browsing for Reports Double-click the name of a Student, Group or Class on the SmartBar from the Reports Index screen [CLICK] to change the reports Scholastic recommends for your selection.

If you have selected a student, the Reports Index will show reports for that student. If you have selected a class in the SmartBar, you will see reports for that class.

You can use the pull-down menu next to Show at the top of the Reports Index main display to move between Classroom and Student Reports, or you can choose to view all reports available to you.

Running ReportsViewing On-Screen Reports

1. Click the button to the left of the report you want to run.

2. Select a time period or the custom option.

3. Click Run Reportonce you have made your selections.

You can also adjust the time period for many of the reports you run in SAM. You willsee the time period selections on the right of the screen once you have selected a report. These are particular for each report. For many reports, you can customize the time period for your specific instructional needs.

If you select the Custom option, you will see the Calendar Tool pop-up on screen. This option is not available for all reports. Below the time period selections, the Report Description gives some more information about how to best use each report. One of the main differences between SAM and SMS is the new way you can “view”reports. You can still print out copies of the data to share and maintain records, but with SAM, you can view and sort the data in reports on your computer screen as well. Follow the steps on screen to run an interactive report.

Running ReportsPrinting On-Screen Reports

1. Click the Print Preview (PDF) link located in the upper right-hand corner of the the screen.

2. Click File from the Adobe Acrobat Reader menu at the top left of the screen.

3. Choose Print in the menu to print the report.

Running Reports: Printing On-Screen ReportsTo run the same report for another student, group or class, double-click the name of the student, group or class in the SmartBar and the reports will repopulate according to your selection. [CLICK TWICE]

In many of the on-screen reports in SAM, you can sort the columns to view the datain ascending or descending order. Each report has a Purpose and Follow-Up, as well as a list of Related Reports, which you can access by clicking the Related Reports link along the top of the screen.

You can also sort report data by the date last run column and by reports run most recently. When you print the report, however, the data will not maintain the sorting. Follow the directions on screen to view and print reports.

Running ReportsSaving On-Screen Reports

1. Click Save a Copy (PDF) at the top of the report screen.

2. Click Save to save this report in the Reports Index. You will then see a confirmation screen.

3. Click View Saved Reports to see all the reports you have saved for the student, or click Return to return to the on-screen report.

Running Reports: Saving On-Screen ReportsYou can also save a copy of the report to email to administrators, parents, or guardians. Follow the steps on screen to save a copy of a report. [CLICK]

Once you have saved a report, click the View Saved Reports link from the Reports Index to access saved reports for any student highlighted in the SmartBar.

To email a copy of the report, save it to your computer and attach the report file to your email, just as you would do for a Microsoft Word or Excel file.

Using SRISRI tests reading comprehension and helps teachers place students in programs, target students’ needs, and track reading growth over time.

The test is computer adaptive, which means it adjusts to the students’ responses.

SRI has a bank of over 4,500 test questions, based exclusively on passages from authentic children’s literature.

Lexile® measures align with grade levels that teachers can use for instruction and for matching students to texts.

Using SRIScholastic Reading Inventory is a reading comprehension test that assesses students’ reading levels. It also helps teachers group students, differentiate instruction, track students’ reading growth over time, and match readers to texts.

The interactive version of SRI is computer adaptive, which means that the test adjusts to the students’ responses. Once students start the test, it shifts their difficulty levels according to student performance. If a student misses a question, the next question will be slightly easier. If the student answers correctly, the next question will be slightly more difficult. When the computer has enough information to generate a Lexile measure, the test stops. Adaptive testing shortens test-taking time, increases testing accuracy, and helps ensure that no two students receive the same test.

SRI has a bank of over 4,500 questions based exclusively on passages from authentic children’s literature, both fiction and nonfiction, as well as excerpts from young adult and classic literature, newspapers, magazines, and periodicals.

As they take the SRI test, students answer modified and embedded cloze test items, similar to those found on any standardized test.

Upon completing the test, a student receives a Lexile measure, which is aligned to grade levels and can be used to to find the range of texts with which the student is most likely to succeed. Students can also print customized Recommended Reading Reports, which suggest books that correspond to the students’ grade level, Lexilemeasure, and interests.

Using SRIWhat SRI Results Tell You

Each time your students take an SRI test, the results are captured by SAM. You can use SAM to generate reports to include the following student data:

• Lexile Measures and Performance Standards• Reading Level (On, Above, or Below Grade Level)• Lexile ranges for Easy, On-Level, and Challenging texts• Normative Data (Percentile Rank, NCEs, and Stanines)• Recommendations for helping students meet grade-level

expectations

Using SRI: What Results Tell YouWe recommend that you administer SRI to your students three to four times a school year. Use SRI at the beginning of the year for placement and to form initial groups for small-group rotations. As the year progresses, you can use students’Lexiles to adjust instruction and regroup according to changes in reading levels. Administering SRI at the end of the year will enable you to evaluate your students’overall growth.

Each time your students take an SRI test, the results are captured by SAM. You can use SAM to generate reports to include the following student data:

• Lexile Measures and Performance Standards• Reading Level (On, Above, or Below Grade Level)• Lexile ranges for Easy, On-Level and Challenging texts• Normative Data (Percentile Rank, NCEs, and Stanines)• Recommendations for helping students meet grade-level expectations

DoDEA Performance Levels: Lexile LevelsThe DoDEA 2006-2011 Community Strategic Plan states that “All students will perform ‘At the Standard’ level or higher in reading by the end of grades six and nine.” This slide demonstrates the proficiency breakdowns for the Lexile measures for grades six and nine.

We would like to give all students the opportunity to take the SRI computer test. In the future, we hope to import and automatically set all sixth and ninth grade students’ reading levels to reflect “Below Reading Level;” when you import students into your classes, make sure to check that their reading levels all reflect “Below Reading Level.”

SRI Settings in SAMSet an Estimated Reading Level

SRI Settings in SAM: Set an Estimated Reading LevelEarlier you practiced adding students to SRI in SAM. Before they take the SRI test, it is important to adjust individual settings. The most important setting before a student takes an SRI test is Estimated Reading Level.

Select one student from the SmartBar and click the Settings link under Programs [CLICK] to open the SRI Settings window. [CLICK]

This will allow you to apply settings for this student in SRI. This setting helps target the computer-adaptive test for individual students and decreases the test time.

It is important to estimate reading levels in order for students to begin the SRI test at the appropriate level. If you teach a class where most of the students are the same reading level, you can simplify this targeting process.

If all of the students in your class are “Far below grade level” or “Below grade level,”select the class name from the SmartBar to target them at the same time. Set the estimated reading level for the whole class and then select the students with different reading levels to adjust their SRI reading levels individually.

Preparing Your Students for the SRI TestYou can help your students succeed in SRI by creating a supportive testing environment. Review test-taking strategies and be sure that the classroom is quiet. You may also wish to practice reading text passages as a class and to model how to answer cloze sentences. The following are specific strategies you can share with your students:

•Look for important ideas. When you read a comprehension passage, look for the main idea, especially in the first sentences of each paragraph.•Complete the sentence. When you think you might have the right answer, read the sentence to yourself and insert the answer. Does the sentence make sense? Does the meaning match the passage? •Use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words. You might come across a vocabulary word you don’t know. Ask yourself questions about what the passage is saying. This can help you determine the meaning of the word to eliminate wrong answer choices.•Use your skips. You can skip up to three SRI questions without affecting your test results. •Take a break between passages. SRI tests aren’t timed, so every few questions, take a break to stretch. You can also complete the test duringanother session.

If students stop midway through the SRI test, it will pick up where they left off when they log back in. Lexiles are just one consideration when matching students to books. As adults, we read books below our Lexile measures for pleasure. Allow students the same opportunity from time to time. For students who have higher Lexile measures than average, it is important to also take into consideration the content level of the book. Is the topic or language age appropriate? Students can read books above their Lexile if they are highly motivated or have lots of background knowledge in the subject. Alternately, students can read books below their Lexile measure if they need to build confidence as readers.

Scholastic Program Concurrency: Recommended Capacity LevelsAs you implement the software across your classrooms, here are some guidelines for how many users each program in the Scholastic suite can accommodate at once, which has an effect on both the speed of the program applications as well as how quickly you’ll be able to run reports across multiple classrooms. This tableshows the results of the concurrent usage testing, which lists our recommendations for maximum concurrent usage of single applications on recommended Windows and Macintosh Servers.

Server performance was comparable on Windows and Macintosh servers. Based on SRI testing on a recommended Novell/Linux server (same specs as recommended Windows Server), we expect the capacity numbers across all products to be equal to or better than the numbers above. To reach these capacity levels, a customer would need the server connected to a gigabit Ethernet switch and 100BaseT connections to all workstations. No changes to default installation settings are needed to reach these capacity levels.
