INTRODUCTION

BY PROFESSOR GEOFFREY PETTS,VICE-CHANCELLOR

The University o Westminster is proud o itsscholarship scheme, which supports studentsrom diverse backgrounds and rom manydierent countries. The scholarship schemehas now been running in a major way or11 years and we are seeing the ruits o our investment. Many o our ormer scholarshave contributed vastly to their countries and

communities and o course we have enabledmany to secure a uture or themselves andtheir amilies, which would not have beenpossible without the opportunities given bythe scholarship scheme.

Last year we appointed our rst Patrono the scheme, the Maharani o Gwalior. The Maharani was our guest o honour atthe November 2011 scholarships receptionin London and launched our new Indiascholarships in New Delhi in April 2012during the celebrations to open our Indiaoce. We are most grateul to Her Highnessor her continued interest and support.

I take this opportunity to thank all our donors, whether individuals, businesses or charitiesthat have helped so much with our work, andwe hope urther partners will be orthcomingto enable us to help even more students to ulltheir dreams and assist their countries andcommunities. Given the global nancial climateit is essential that we attract urther unding rom

outside the University to the scheme. There are several new and exciting changesto Westminster’s Scholarships scheme in2012/13. We welcome our nal Olympichandover scholars rom China. These wereestablished to celebrate the handover o theOlympic Games rom Beijing to London. Weintend to carry on this theme with handoverscholarships or Brazilians to welcome thegames to Rio de Janerio.

This year we also welcome our rst studentsrom North Korea. This is through a jointventure with Pyongyang University o Scienceand Technology (PUST), which is North Korea’srst privately unded university, and is partlyunded by associations and people outside thecountry, in particular rom China and the USA.

We have also taken the opportunity todevelop a number o new scholarships toextend the range o the programme. We haveintroduced scholarships or graduate diplomasand scholarships to assist South Sudan inits transition to new nationhood, to mentionbut two. The UK’s National ScholarshipsProgramme is also being launched in 2012.

We hope with your support to continue toexpand the opportunities we are able to givestudents in the uture.

SUPPORTING

EXCELLENCE IN NEED

EDUCATIONTRANSFORMING FUTURESEducation has an unrivalled ability to changelives, both or those who have the opportunityto study, and or those who benet romtheir knowledge. Making knowledge widelyaccessible was one o the ounding principles

o the Royal Polytechnic Institution, Universityo Westminster’s original incarnation. It isa principle that we adhere to today, witha student body that is incredibly diverse inculture, nationality and background.

Philanthropy has played a vital rolein supporting our students rom the verybeginning, when Quintin Hogg made hiseducational endowment to establish the RegentStreet Polytechnic. We remain dedicated tomaking it possible or outstanding students whocould not access higher education without ourhelp to realise their potential.

Our students explore the elds o creativeindustries, business, law, humanities, liesciences, and computing and electronics. Our sta and alumni have made their mark inmany elds, and our current students will goon to shape proessional lie o the uture, andchange lives or the better, both in the UK andinternationally. Now you can play a key role in

that change.

THE LEADING UNIVERSITYSCHOLARSHIPS SCHEMEIN THE UKToday, about 750 students at our Universitybenet rom scholarships every year. Arounda quarter o this support comes rom externalsources. However, every year we also haveto turn down at least a urther 3,000 goodscholarship applicants. We want to address thisby providing an additional 100 scholarshipsannually, and we need philanthropic support toachieve that goal.

Our scholarships scheme has been praisedor its diverse, fexible and innovative approachto supporting students. A scrupulous awardprocess based on clear criteria is ollowed bycontinual pastoral care or beneciary students. The scheme’s success has been recognisedby the Award or Outstanding Support orOverseas Students rom the Times HigherEducation magazine.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE,TOUCH A LIFENow more than ever, maintaining our abilityto change lives through access to higher

education will depend on philanthropic supportor scholarships. By helping us to extend thescholarships scheme, you will be providingopportunities or a diverse and vibrant studentcommunity. You will be changing lives andenabling them to improve the lives o manyothers, at a time o uncertainty or all, andwhen nancial limits may prevent many promisingstudents rom pursuing higher education.

Your contribution could be shaped fexiblyand linked to a particular school, departmentor course, should you wish to do so.

“The Cosmur Scholarship eased my mind and has broughtpeace to me as a student. It meant that I did not have tosqueeze my pocket so hard that my education would berestricted by my wealth.

The costs o student lie are already building up, and with asingle parent it is a great opportunity to have the tuition eeswashed away, clearing any worrying thoughts in the presentand the uture or both me and my mum.

“I’ve got ond memories o my time at what was then thePolytechnic o Central London: it was a good degree, itgave me a good choice, I remember one or two memberso sta there who were excellent. I just thought I’d like togive something back. O course, now it’s the Universityo Westminster, the market is going to become verycompetitive, the students no longer have what I had in the80s – a government grant and no tuition ees – and so Ithought, OK let me support that.

Higher education is a very important part o one’sdevelopment. These are the ormative years and it’s ashame that tuition ees are coming in; everyone shouldhave a chance both to develop themselves educationallyand to reach emotional maturity. I hope the scholarship

encourages someone who isn’t able to aord the ees andwould be put o rom studying economics, business ornance to consider doing it.

Time as an undergraduate is also important in putting yoursel at the oreront o the competitive space in thejob environment, which is only going to get harder. Mymessage to the recipients would be to get the most outo the time at university. I do think that everyone’s targetshould be to get a First, aim to do the very best youpossibly can. We’re always learning or the rest o ourlives, so use this as a springboard to go on to do biggerand better things.”

The charity Guildford Academic Associates (GAA) was founded in 1981 by Dr Eric and Joan Reid ontheir retirement from the University of Surrey. The

couple were both scientists who also had a shared interest in the arts and, as research students, ‘grew up’ with the Royal Ballet.

“Eric and Joan identied organisations andcauses they wished to support. The charityquietly targeted education-related endowmentsin the arts and encouraged university entrance(especially emale students into scientic subjects)with the aim o alleviating unoreseeablehardship. It also supported bioscientic research, largely through the Biochemical Society, andhumanitarian causes in this country and abroad.

I rst met the Reids in 1983 when I wasprincipal o the Guildord School o Acting, and they generously oered essential supportto the Student Hardship Fund at a time whenlocal authority awards to drama students weredisappearing. Following the deaths o Joanin 2008 and Eric in 2010, the trustees andI have continued to support relevant secular

charities, including unding a scholarship or aemale Biosciences student at the University o Westminster. With tuition ees increasing andthe careers market as competitive as ever, it’scrucial that organisations such as ours continueto support those in nancial hardship to achievethe best possible education.”

PROFESSOR MICHAEL GAUNT CHAIRMAN

“My dedication and passion or IT led me to pursue an MScin Computer Science, but universities in Jamaica had only aew ull scholarships and no exposure to a dierent educationsystem and culture.

The Central America and the Caribbean Full Scholarshipgave me access to education that I would not otherwise have

had the opportunity to receive, and the course at the Universityo Westminster allowed me to customise my learning path tosuit my needs. In addition, I had access to extensive knowledgerom the academic sta, various sotware and tools in the ITlabs, and presentation rom external speakers.

The learning experience extended beyond the classroom asI shared in the British culture and other cultures rom Europe toas ar as India and China, connecting me to their lives on apersonal scale.

My time at Westminster contributed to my overall personaland proessional development because o the educationattained, the riendships ormed, cultures experienced andappreciation o how countries can bond by enhancing eachother’s lie which unites us on a global scale. This is the bestapproach to promoting harmony between generationsand nations.”
